This EXCLUSIVE video shows how late-ice, trophy female pike feed actively; BUT, since they are carrying around 300,000 eggs their gut isn’t very ROOMY. In the final days of the ice fishing season, we find them to prefer medium sized bait when they’ve been well fed. These 9” herring are large but, still, definitely on the menu. However, the large herring received both “drive-by” inspections and “huffing” to taste before the big girls finally COMMITTED to their meal.

Might I suggest two things- first down size your leader and go away from steel leaders, %99 of the time not necessary - and if u get five more bites due to lighter leader and break one off youre still plus four more fish! And #2-run your hook through the back center of the herring like u are but pull the hook all the way through and then skin hook your hook into the herring 's head. that way you don't change your pivot point, your herring still hangs straight AND as u surely noticed the pike always take the bait head first so your hook will be in the mouth even when the pike just mouths the bait. If they are biting aggressive enough to swallow the bait and r getting hooked too deep just switch to a circle hook. That's relatively rare in winter though. Good fishing to ya and great video!

Easily distracted, many (not all) of the "misses opportunities" were the result of the big pike noticing and being intrigued by the camera. Watch closely to see the fish's eyeball shift ever so slightly toward the camera with a complete change of body language and focus. At the end of the day, having "huffed" and tasted the bait, the fish became emboldened thus choosing to eat the bait. Not capitalizing on this opportunity would mean she would have to wait until the next morning (daylight period) to hunt again. Furthermore, in the fading light and dim water, the camera was not as imposing and the pike's commitment to the bait went undisturbed.

When we film for videos like this we shoot horizontally for the best videography for our underwater library archives. However, super stealth, quicker scouting and NO DISTRACTIONS between the pike and bait is achieved by DOWN VIEW positioning of the AQUAVU camera!
