Good thing to learn. Kenny at Eagle Eye Shooting has videos showing his barrel smithing and if I remember right (but may have been some other gunsmith video) I think some have shown his cutting & threading a blank for a barrel extension, explaining the process. Worth watching here on YT, he's got some interesting gunsmithing videos, usually with end-product footage at the range.

@@onpsxmember You're welcome. He's got some interesting videos that I've often considered a bolt gun version of Chad's work on YT. He has a fair amount of discussion of what makes a good barrel, how they're made as blanks, how they're chambered, etc. Mostly bolt gun, but he's built semi-autos also.

EVERY manufacturer can and does have occasional subpar parts slip under the eye of QC before leaving the factory. That's just an outcome of products being manufactured by we fallible humans. What sets one manufacturer apart from some others is how they own up to these problems by not burdening their customers with the fixes, but covering them under warranty. This was a very good video that shows even the more premier companies can generate mistakes. Well done, Chad!! 👍

Holy shit!! Great video Chad, thanks for covering the dimple. I can’t believe I didn’t notice the extension was loose during headspacing. Per the TDP, it isn’t supposed to be, but some manufacturers do it. It can cause problems in chamberings with larger diameter cases or even in 5.56 if they drill too deep. It’s best to follow the TDP and apply the correct torque for the extension, and it won’t come off unless someone really doesn’t know what they’re doing and torques the receiver with the barrel mounted in it, instead of isolating the barrel.

I thought for many years that the locator pin was seated into the barrel threads. As a matter of fact, I’ve made a few barrels from blanks, and seated the pins. I guess I need to disassemble the upper I built recently with a Colt replacement barrel, that has the gas port a little off center, and check the extension torque. Thanks for the continuing education.

Wish I sent you my Aero upper - first shot the charging handle smacked me in the nose😅. They tried to blame the Charging handle and said it was “too strong” and I needed a milspec(it was a Radian). Then they said it was the Cerakote- but I have others Cerakote with no issues. Seemed the latch pocket was ok, I swapped all parts to my other rifles upper and had zero issues…after lots of emails they told me to send it in for inspection. 2 months later I called, they had no update on the cause but shipped me a new upper..I got screwed on my matching Cerakote and they didn’t even offer anything, didn’t give me a cause or apologize😑.

I remember when nitride barrels started becoming common loads for them would be nitrided after the extension was torqued. You could usually tell if the salt residue was left in the gap. Those often would come loose within a few rounds. I believe everyone now days knows to nitride and clean before they torque the extensions.

I first learned that barrels were 2 pieces when nitrided barrels got popular, and less detail oriented companies were nitriding both the extension and the barrel, and due to the slick surface of the nitriding (or something) the extensions were loosening from the rest of the barrel. Never bought one single nitrided barrel after hearing that, and yes, I know they can be done right. Phosphated and chrome lined all day.

I had a 300 B.O. barrel that had that problem. The way it was found was during removing from an upper receiver. The "fix" done was crank it to crazy torque on barrel nut, 😳 I had to cut it off. The upper receiver threads galled and stripped assembled without lubrication it looked like too. First time I had ever seen a barrel extension able to be unscrewed with my fingers. A 12.5 nitrated barrel from good company. Stuff happens, it wasn't a D.D. product. BTW.

More or less, from a gross movement perspective. But the tolerances between the throat groove (for the pin) and the diameter of the pin can vary, leaving some rotational movement potential. Reaction rods are the tool for the job, so that no stress is put on that pin/groove situation.

I'm sure there is a large safety margin there. One potential issue is that it is hard to heat something perfectly evenly. Be it a torch or heat gun heating an item up will heat the outside surface and edges/corners faster than the parts closer to the center-even with a material that moves heat as well as aluminium. Your thermometer may read 300 but spots could get much hotter. Also if a BE is tight enough to need more heat than that, you might have something out of spec.
