I WORK IN THAT BUILDING!...and I have an AR Drone! It has haunted the Mall a few times (during business hours) Wow, you had the place to yourselves, nice! I work down to the lower left, at Tech-Central. This is soooo cool 'yall had two drones inside the atrium! WELL DONE! I have been wondering what would happen, when go fly off a large 'CLIFF;. NOW I KNOW, it works fine! Thanks for showing me the cliff-situation. ...and 'yall are good with a drone! Well done!

5 Joules, is the result of a 105 gram Ar. Drone battery falling from 6 stories (3-4 seconds at 9.8m/s), directly to the floor. (without wind resistance.) Minimum joules needed to cause minor injury are in the 10-15 range. Why did you choose the battery specifically? Who would throw a battery like that from six stories? In a Drone, it's firmly secured, and with the indoor hull (made of foam) a fall like that is mostly negated. It's proved in the video, when the Drone pulls through a major fall.

That is so cool. I wish you guys would have spliced in some video from the onboard cameras. That would have been some really awesome video! Ballsy, though... I'm not sure I would trust my skills with my $300 investment 60 ft about the hard floor. You guys rock!

I know there is an approximately 50 meter limit from the user to the Drone, but are there any other limitations? Could I just fly straight up 50 meters? Could I, on a balcony 200 meters above the ground, fly the Drone out over the balcony, so that the Drone is 200 meters above the ground, but still within 50 meters of me?

@JELmusic12 жыл бұрын
I already said the drone is not designed to withstand tumbling down a concrete wall from 6 stories high. Such tumbling can rip it to shreds. And if the initial few feet of drop induces sufficient spin, then the battery may be flung out. The drone is not exactly a flying armored tank, so it won't keep the battery in place if G-forces grow too big. And even if the battery doesn't fall out entirely, it may still drop out of the pocket and be the first thing to hit someone. A toddler perhaps...

I have the hardest choice in the world its in between the A.R.Drone or the IPad 2 and I dont no which one to choose its a really hard choice can someone help me?
@raquer1010112 жыл бұрын
How would you know what it's designed to take as far as hull related stresses? I'm the drone owner, and further more, your point is refuted by this video. To rip such a hull off, it would require ripping through the camera mast as well. The drone might be fragile, but it keeps itself together very well. "A" battery won't rightly work. The Ar. Drone has a very limited payload, and a battery that heavy may just tip the scale. The normal Drone battery weighs 105 grams. No more, no less.
@Niinami10 жыл бұрын
Was this recorded in one go? Did you have to charge the battery between takes? I really want one but 10-15 minutes flight time seem very low.

The reason it didn't break when it hit the ground is because at that height Auto Rotation occurs when falling which acts as a natural air brake.
@chris74656846211 жыл бұрын
Auto rotation does not occur in fixed-pitch rotors. They would spin backwards and with no control, the quad most likely flipped on its descent. It's one tough drone!

chris746568462 Also the center cross piece is designed to endure flat falls, however mine landed vertically on one leg from 3 feet and it broke so...yeah...

I classify outrageous by the probability of something happening. It's common to file a law-suit for auto related accidents, but a suit for getting hit by a "toy" seems like it wouldn't really fly. No pun intended. Though one might get an article in the newspaper about it. That would be fun to read. As for my Drone, I would fly it, if I could. But I left it with my parents, 5000 miles away. I'm in Europe now. If I could have taken it, I would have, but I couldn't, so I didn't.

The drone is designed to fall through open air when used outside. It's NOT designed to take the beating of 6 flights of concrete wall. Such tumbling and ripping can surely lead to the indoor-hull being ripped off and the battery to be ripped out of the case. A battery can weigh up to 210 grams and has POINTY edges! If that hits your skull, or maybe your eye or your teeth, it CERTAINLY might be harmful! If you're sued for the cost of fixing a set of teeth, you might be ruined financially!

@raquer1010112 жыл бұрын
You still haven't presented an argument against my point that such a battery is not able to leave the security of the Drone's inner workings during flight, and even during a crash. Even the 210 gram monster (that tips the 100 gram payload for good responsive flight maneuvers) Would be safely strapped into the interior. Any battery that is not secured would present a serious hazard to the drone, it's flight characteristics, and the people around it. A shifting center of gravity is never good.
@mrmurphy17211 жыл бұрын
I cant speak for 1.0 durability but 2.0 durability is pretty good. Things break but so far its only been gears and pins so far. Theres no way a 1500 mah battery is giving 30 mins of fly time. I get about 8 mins of fly time on a 1000mah 1500 mah would make 12 mins max.

a 210 gram battery falling from 6 stories up results in approx. 37 joules

I know. My problem is with the one that fall to the ground at about 2:18 in the video. It's falling from like the 6th floor (or whatever floor they're on). Imagine an unsuspecting toddler playing down there... the battery alone on these things can bump your head pretty hard. Especially if dropped from the 6th floor. Completely irresponsible way to use this toy!

@JELmusic12 жыл бұрын
You know very well, or maybe you don't but then you should, that accidents always happen when they aren't expected. There could be a janitor down there, or a mexican cleaning lady. If you can't fly responsibly, don't fly. It's that simple. Had you flown from downstairs people would have seen you and been aware of the situation. But when flying from upstairs, hiding on a balcony, nobody down there would be aware of the potential danger of being hit by a falling battery-pack. Just be responsible!

If they had real skills they wouldn't have crashed the drone to the ground. And their behavior in the video clearly shows they're completely ignorant. Maybe one day they'll grow up and become responsible adults. That would be nice, because then we would all be safer. Don't argue with me on this; safety must come first. Otherwise you're just as foolish as they are. You're not losing a 'youtube-fight' by conceding to the argument of safety-first. On the contrary; you'll win by doing that :)
@raquer1010112 жыл бұрын
You gave an If-then statement, and then insulted the maker of the video using derogatory language. Your opinion on the video was nowhere to be seen. If you had said something like: "I believe the makers of this video were a little rash in flying their drones inside a hotel." then that would be a legitimate opinion. The use of bad language in an insulting manner, and offering a threat to something that (if you look around and pay attention) would never happen is, in fact, considered trolling.
