I just bore sighted my Springfield Armory Saint today, it took me 9 rounds, three rounds at a time. This is pretty much the same as I did it in the Army. In the Army they gave each soldier three five round magazines each containing three rounds. This I believe was a smart idea as this insured that when the shooting ceased after each three round shot group the bolt would retract and verify that the weapon was cleared. You have to remember that for a lot of these individuals this was the very first time they ever held a weapon let alone fired one. Better to be safe than sorry.

Your video wasn't boring to me. I already know how to sight in a rifle, and already have my ARs sighted in. I chose a 50 yard sight in for a flatter trajectory but I still enjoyed watching your video. You applied the same principles that I use except for the 25 yard sight in distance. I understand that sight in distance is just a matter of opinion. I see you posted this video a few years ago but I understand that these days, at least some of our armed forces are moving towards a 50 yard sight in distance. Having been a type one diabetic from the age of two, I was never able to serve so I have to base that last statement off of research I have done. I have considered both sight in distances and at least for my purposes, sighting in at 50 yards makes more sense. Lest I forget, I would like to thank you for your service.

Beautiful! Reminds me of my time in 25th ID. People make zeroing an AR much harder than it needs to be. Do it like this and you're ready to go. Too much hollywood/playstation BS these days. Thank you for a real good tutorial.

Great video. Identical to what the Army taught me in the spring of 1973 Ft. Jackson, SC. We were shooting the A1 version. Both the front sight and the rear sight adjusted with a bullet tip or sight tool which no one ever had. Of course the carry handle was part of the upper assembly back then. No rails and no drum adjustment on the rear sight. We were taught the 3 shot zero method at 25 meters on a target that was called a Canadian half bull as I recall. A tight 25 meter zero gave you accurate hits at 300 meters. Any target in between 25 meters and 300 meters required holding low on the target. How much low varied with the actual distance to the target. Many people don't understand that the bullet crosses the line of sight twice. With the 5.56 ball ammo and a 20 inch barrel it rises across the line of sight at 25 meters and drops back down across the line of sight at 300 meters. One zero for 2 distances.

Although the novice watching this video will be able to get a BSZ and a BDC function, he will still have no comprehension of how many clicks of windage would be needed to counter for wind when the correct favor for wind can not be discerned from the sight picture. In other words "let's see what 4 clicks will do", does not cut it, it does not have to because we already know the M4 windage knob has a 3/4 minute of angle value and the front sight has a 1 3/4 minute of angle value; thus, using a little math we can easily discern exactly the amount of movement a sight adjustment will make in inches at target distance. Here's how to do it: 1. First, think what the value of 1 MOA is at target distance: Distance to Target in Meters / 100 = Value of 1 MOA in Inches at Target Distance 2. Next, think how many of those MOAS will fit into inches of needed movement: Inches of Movement Needed / Value of 1 MOA in Inches at Target Distance = MOA Adjustment 3. Finally, determine how many clicks to sight for needed movement: MOA Adjustment / Sight MOA Click Value = Clicks to Sight for Needed Movement For example, let’s say you’ve set your target out to 25 meters and you’ve produced a group which is 2 inches low and 2 inches right of the target’s center. Remembering the front sight has a 1 .75 MOA click value, and the rear sight windage drum has a .75 MOA click value you can now determine sight adjustment needed: First, determine adjustment needed to front sight controlling up/down movement: 1. 25 Meters / 100 = .25 Inches 2. 2 Inches / .25 = 8 MOA 3. 8 / 1.75 = 4.75 clicks (round to 5 clicks) to front sight post in clock-wise direction for needed vertical movement of grouping on target Now, repeat steps to determine adjustment needed to rear sight drum controlling left/right movement: 1. 25 Meters / 100 = .25 Inches 2. 2 Inches / .25 = 8 MOA 3. 8 MOA / .75 =10.6 clicks (round to 11 clicks) to sight windage knob in left direction for needed horizontal movement of grouping on target Creds: CMP-USAMU certified MRI coaching SDM/SAFS, US Distinguished Rifleman, and NRA Long Range High Master Club

Thanks for a well done video. I agree with other viewers it is never boring to watch someone doing something the right way. I know this was not a marksmanship training video but I would emphasize how important it is to get a good cheek to stock weld as you did and try to repeat the same every time.you shoot. It was neat to observe your calm concentration when putting those rounds downrange. And for newcomers it would never hurt to remember the acronym we learned in US ARMY BCT " BRASS " B reathe R elease half A im S queeze S hoot I built my own AR-15 from a stripped lower and I loved going shooting at the range. For me it was my own form of meditation. Attempting that perfect shot group. Unfortunately due to some personal challenges I had to sell all my guns to help raise the money to move from Houston, Tx to NC.
@alancranford3398
@alancranford3398 3 жыл бұрын
Three rounds vs five rounds--in 2009 the Army marksmanship training unit brought this up at Camp Navajo in marksmanship classes for the 442nd Signal Battalion. Three shots is enough if you are proficient. You might want to fire one shot and adjust when ammo is short. Three shots prevents mistaking a flyer for your group center. You get an average group center from three shots as long as your group is tight--no more than 1.5 inches. Your three-shot group was under an inch and is fine. Five shots for poor marksmen works like this--fire five shots and take the three bullet holes that are closest together as your group--discard the other two as flyers. As long as three of your five shots group within 1.5 inches at 27 yards (25 meters) that will work for determining group center--60% of your bullet holes are landing in the same area. From 1975 to 2010 I qualified with the M16 service rifle an average of three times every two years. I trained something like 2000 other people in M16 rifle marksmanship during that period. I am also an experienced military armorer (additional duty).
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 Жыл бұрын
Remember your coach asking you “how did that shot look”. For a shooter who can call his shots three rounds is enough to get a good zero, but for ALL shooters, including High Masters, triangulation of 5 shots which exclude up to two which seem to be out of grouping might yield a better no-wind zero. It’s why the USAMU says do 5 shot groupings when time and ammo allocation allow.

I keep it at 300 because I can flip the aperture for closer ranges (I can still hit pretty good with the large aperture out to 200 meters). Flipping the aperture would be just as quick as adjusting clicks. An easier method for me is to just hold slightly 6 o clock for closer targets. Range estimation is pretty easy and fast with standard irons. It's just what works for me.

RB M that's my favorite way to zero anything scoped. It makes for a one shot zero. One to see where you're at, adjust poa to poi, technically you could call it a day. I usually move poa to the bullseye, fire two more, usually the holes are in the right place and I'm good to go.

you where already zeroed for height /range first 3 shots , iron sight , as sight centre line , above barrel centre line . Best simple zero 25 yard 3 shot group 1 inch below point of aim . Which equals 100 yard zero 3 inches above point of aim (confirm if you have range ). So then a 300 yards your point of aim , will also be your impact point .Used this zero for years Infantry Rifleman RNZIR

They deal with close quarters combat alot more than other units. For example, my world is mostly Air Base Defense. I want to be able to hit a target as far out as possible in that role. That is why I like the 25/300. It's simple, effective, and I can put rounds out to 600 with a carbine. If I am not hitting the target at that distance, I am hopefully suppressing and stopping forward movement.
@charlesludwig9173

All, the shooter here is not firing a 14.5 inch barreled carbine or a 20 barreled rifle. He is firing a 16 inch barreled carbine thus his rear sight does not exactly sync with velocity to yield a 300 meter zero from sighting-in at 25 meters with sight set at 6/3 or Z marking. Thus the shooter should set sight at 6/3 and then adjust front sight as needed for point of aim impact at 300 meters. The shooter should also learn MOA wind constant formula for prevailing wind velocity using the constant of 7 for M855 ammunition or the constant of 10 for Mk262. The formula for a 10 mph crosswind over 300 yards should look like this: 300 meters divided by 100 times 10 mph wind divided by constant of 7 equals 4 MOA or 12 inch favor. If wind is taken on rear sight instead of hold off then multiply 4MOA by .75 click value(carbine) or .5 value click value for sight on rifle. For rifle that would mean 8 clicks to windage drum . Ya got all of that?

One time we were goofing off trying to do tiney smiley faces at like maybe 15 yards(indoor range) so I zeroed it for that range. Due to a bad eye I have to use an optic mounted on a carry handle so my optic is about 2 3/4 inches above the bore. After adjusting it to shoot 45 feet I was several feet high at 200 yards. lol I did make some mighty fine smiley faces though, I usually zero at 200 letting the bullet come up to the sight & I just keep in mind It shoots a little low under 200.

@millerusaf. I think in order for the 25 meter zero to be truly effective you need to be shooting 62 grain NATO spec 5.56 ammo. Like SS109. I think you will be slightly off at 300 meters due to using 55 grain commercial .223 ammo. It would be nice to see a follow up video showing how it does at 300 meters with the same ammo you sighted in with.

As far as the Marines go, I think a big part of it is that the vast majority of marines haven't shot rifles until they join. So they are all taught one method that generaly works in modern combat. I was one of those guys. But I feel I've been shooting long enough to find what works best for me. I use a ballist computer to find the optimum max point blank zero and use that for irons. I don't know about the Seals. I know that not everyone who trys out for seals were SOF beforehand.

Yeah, I think I might just leave it at that. I would rather my rounds go slightly lower in close combat ranges (Where you would be using iron-sights) because on a target with a profile, those rounds will still hit something like their lower abdomen where as a round going high could miss over their shoulder. Just my stance on "1-click higher"

I was wrong--the bullet drop of a 5.56 is 12 inches at 300 yards--so it would make sense to raise your target approximately 8 inches above your shooting position to hit targets from 0 to 300 yards. There's a good video here of a former special forces sniper explaining this theory.

Fine video. Were you shooting the M4 carbine? My question deals with the rear A2 sight elevation adjustment. What are you supposed to have it set at before you commenced zeroing in, and aren't you supposed to adjust it a click after zeroing in? I noticed that your target is also far larger than the M4 25 meter target also. Guess you have to estimate how many clicks will correct windage in comparison to the standard target.

Let’s see what 4clicks will do? If you understood that your sights move in MOA then you would know the front sight click value is 1.75 MOA and the rear sight value is .75 MOA thus at 25 meters a click on the front sight will move bullet impact about a half inch and a click on the rear sight will move bullet impact a little less than .2 inches. The bottom line is let’s not see how much a sight adjustment will make. Instead let’s know what the sight adjustment will make.
