If your rifle is shooting low and you want to adjust the front sight you lower the front sight to make the rifle shoot higher

Things have changed a bit since 1973. We used a Canadian Bull. Point of impact was about 2 inches low of point of aim at 25 meters.

I have a couple of things you might want to address in a different video possibly is how your target should appear to your front post site and the fact that you should be aiming at the middle of the target when you are making sight adjustments. I usually arrange my front post or blade with the target bottom (a circular target as example) sitting on top of the post. And tdimension for newer people always aim at the center of the circular target in the middle of the 0 target you want to bring your group to where your eyes are aiming on the target. The process is to get where your eyes are looking and the bore of the rifle are hitting in the same spot as best we can. Thanks for the video it's a very good video I appreciate you guys taking the time to make it

Rephrasing from earlier post, video is succinct, as it is correct, but not complete, which requires final zeroing at 300 meters and adjustment of front sight as needed. Why? It’s because zeroing at 25 meters does not reveal shooter’s understanding of need for consistent sight alignment or sight picture to get center of mass hits in a no wind condition. In addition, shooting at an E target, which has no grid to indicate Needed MOA of sight adjustment forces the shooter to comprehend MOA value at target distance.

Do it the USMC way. BZO at 36yards. Are using an A2 or DCH on a flatop or a flip up rear sight? so for an A2 style rear sight, using the small sight always, come up 3 clicks on rear sight for 300 yards. shot 3 rnds adjust front sight post. it should take about 10rnds to get BZO. 3 mags. 2 mags with 3rnds, one mag with 4 rnds. now your sighted in for 300 yards. adjust rear down 3 clicks which would be for 0 to 100 yards. 2 clicks up for 200 yards, 3 clicks up for 300. for a 500 yard do see a 5? go up 3 more clicks to the 8 for a 500 yards. usmc use yards not meters on our ranges.
@sldessel
@sldessel 2 жыл бұрын
So here is my question. You use the small rear sight apetreto zero, would you put the Larger apeture back up? What are the uses of the two different sized rear sights? I have heard different things. Some people say the large one is for close targets or low light and the smaller one is for zero and long range. Could someone clearify exactly what they are for?
@WolfQuantum
@WolfQuantum 2 жыл бұрын
The large aperture (usually marked 0-200) is for close (and moving) targets and low light as you stated. Generally, you would use the smaller aperture overall. There is a verticle offset between the two as well with the A2. No offset IIRC on the M16A1. We used the 0-200 when doing night fire qualifications and with the M17 Protective Mask back in my Army days. (M16A1 and M16A2 years. Remember too that the sight-in shown here is with a 20-inch barrelled A2 type following military procedure. Both the sights and sight-in system are for use with M855 ammo. The green-tip 62 Grain stuff. For anything else, be it carbine length barrel and/or different ammo, you will need to sight in and then check where your points of impact (POI) end up at the different ranges. I'm sure that only clarified one thing and tossed mud on everything else. Generally speaking though, you will use the small aperture unless you absolutely need the extra light to pass through of the larger. Smaller apertures are more precise as long as you have the light to see with them. My personal AR is a mock Dissipator. It is a 16" barrel with a mid-length gas system, but with the front sight mounted at the same spot that you would find on a full 20" barrel and using full-length handguards. For house and close ranges I run a carry handle with the 0-200 flipped up and a good light on it. I can flip the light on and have a good sight picture fast that will put rounds on target at those ranges. I also have it sighted in for 50 yards with the large aperture because that's how I would likely use it. However, I've changed its role a little so I'll be resighting using the military standard sight-in to start with the ammo I'm using then verify POI at various ranges. Depends on what you want to do with the rifle/carbine.

@@WolfQuantumThis was a very detailed comment and I appreciate that you were willing to share. It brings me great joy to see others point out some details that most either don’t know about or skip over based on training time available. Particularly the part about confirming your zero at distance. The Army has actually added this as a mandatory practice in the newest annual individual weapons qualification. As part of Table IV in TC 3-20.40, after grouping and zeroing each soldier must confirm at distance with the standard being, after completion of the 25 meter zero, the Soldier must successfully hit a properly presented E-type target with a minimum of four of five (80-percent) shots at multiple distances beyond the normal 25 meter line.

Late reply I know, but I hope you see this. Please do not have anyone do this task for you. I cannot stress this enough. There is enough open source information out there for you learn this task. If you are going to pay for anything at all (and I really hope you don’t) pay someone to TEACH you how to do it. Not everyone holds a fork or a spoon the same way. If you get someone else to hold the spoon, you might end up with food everywhere but where you want it. Please look into this. The way you hold the rifle, the amount of pressure you have on the stick in your shoulder, the tilt of your head aiming down sights, the distance of your eye from the rear aperture, or even the way you squeeze the trigger will alter things. Long story short, if you have someone else zero your weapon, then it will be zeroed to them and not you. You might be close or “on paper”. But this is a basic fundamentals of marksmanship. You want it to be done right? Seek the knowledge, apply it, learn and grow.
@brena3582

@@YumYumGetSum no worries about the timing, I agree with you. I never ended up paying anyone. I did ask a buddy former service member for help and was able to learn a few new tips and get the rifle zeroed. Still learning and practicing. One thing he had me do was tape earplugs to the stock so my cheek well and head tilt didn't change. The idea is that when one ear plug is in the corner of my mouth and the other touching the front of my upper cheek I would know my positioning was proper and could easily replicate my position until it becomes a natural hold. Idk if that makes sense but it helped. The other thing he informed me of was my handguard needed a riser for the front sight which in combination with the other tip he gave me, dramatically changed the zeroing process. I was almost immediately able to zero and in the process learned alot.

Set to Z if shooting M16A4, and then after sighting in at 25 meters move rear sight down from Z to 6/3. If shooting an M4 set rear sight to 6/3, not Z and it will remain at that setting unless you need to use the sight’s bullet drop compensation feature for hits out to 600 meters.

Of course the military target’s grid precludes the shooter from needing to understand sight movement in MOA to sight-in. Good hits at distance however will cause need to understand MOA so it might be good for the shooter to get some more training. Also. While it’s easy to zero the AR-15 A2 the shooter must first be able to shoot a group so maybe some instruction on sight alignment and trigger control too?

It is nice to learn the old ways and the military basics thank you guys. But common sense tells you you can pull out the bolt and bore sight that thing by pointing it at a vehicle 500 yards away and save the first six bullets, and you’ll get twice as close than the first 2 groups. Then you can go to the third step of your adjustment and grouping. And I learned that from a 30 year state trooper and range deputy at the Denton County S.O. in the great state of Texas…

"You want the base of the front sight post even and flush with the sight well"! What?! That's about as clear as an 8" concrete block. You should be able to do better. At the start, do you want the front sight post as high as it will go, as low as it will go, or somewhere in between? A sketch would be very helpful.

Great video nuts and bolts, and well made but if you could please add more loud ass shitty back ground music it totally aids the instructional valve to this piece.

I really had a lot of respect for sergeant majors while I served in the Army. I would rather have one sergeant major leading me then 20 officers. Sergeant majors has been there done that and officers only done what looked good on paper. While I was in Germany we went to the range and our captain could not put a BCG back together 🤯a E5 sergeant did it for him that’s sad.
