the thing is, this project was almost dead, but thanks to find of research and testing they concluded that people don't care about the processing power of their phones as much as everything else. So everything besides graphics and processing will be available to modify
@Pacavi8 жыл бұрын
+Pemphro the RAM, processor, and main memory won't be upgradable, which have evolved dramatically over the past few years. To have these limited and say the phone is fully upgradable without getting a new phone is false. When technology advances, this phone may have a new camera, but the main frame will be left obsolete. Also, as screens get to a higher resolution, and they add features to them, we'd have to replace the whole frame to replace the screen I believe. In doing so, we'd have to pay for new RAM, processor, and memory.

Google does something innovative. Apple user-"This is gonna fail." Apple releases the same phone for 10th time. Apple user-"Oh ma gurd Apple is so revolutionary!" Apple stocks continue to drop.
@WixkedLovy8 жыл бұрын
Apple users don't think every new phone is revolutionary. In fact, it's probably Apples formula of not changing every new phone too much that makes people keep buying them. It's easier having a new phone that doesn't take a week to get used to and if there are any problems the solution is probably the same as the solution of the last phone. And it's not like Apple users like every change either. Like how the iPhone 7 supposedly won't have a headphone jack and will be using Bluetooth earphones instead.
@Mystic.ape.8 жыл бұрын
Also Android adds a feature that used to be an Apple exclusive Apple users- Android is ripping Apple off, they should be sued. Apple rips off an Android feature Apple users- omg Apple continues to innovate, I was waiting for this feature to come to Apple

+Firas almannaa I believe they are held on with strong magnets(I remember hearing that at one point) which should help with it keeping together. If something breaks, though, you could just hotswap it. ;D +Chris McPole The main issue with Google Glass was the price point. It wound up alienating a large group of the general public. Google also should have taken a more active approach to handling the concerns of people in and out of the community. The device itself wasn't actually the problem and a lot of people showed interest to having even just a couple of the features let alone the whole package. Hell, the camera quality isn't great but I have yet to see a more practical form of capturing pictures in the moment. Source: I gave demos to at least 2000 people between 2013 and 2015 using my personal device. I also discussed at length with people that were and weren't a part of the program on how the device could improve and how public concerns(such as the camera) could be taken account of. Many were excited about it, and likely we will see it or something similar to it come up within the next couple years successfully.
@cooleymovies8 жыл бұрын
That's why it was held back they needed stronger magnets and that being said I think parts will still fall off just not as massively as they had done before
@AndrewMeyer8 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Buth Glass didn't have a price point. It never got out of the explorer program, so we'll never know what the price for the consumer model might have been.
@NathanButh8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Meyer it wound up not being exclusive. after a few months anybody could join the program in the US and a while later in the UK. The price was $1500 though which wound up effectively alienating it from the normal everyday people that wanted it as a consumer device. Heck, the only reason I could even remotely justify the cost was to have a developer device on a platform that could become big(like those who bought the original Oculus Rift).

Idea: Make a case for spare battery modules that doubles as a power bank. If you're low on juice, just swap the battery modules and place the other battery in the case and it will charge. You can even make it charge wirelessly by putting the essential parts on the modules themselves and having a place for the modules. A normal module case is good too. Just so people can have their extra organized.
I think they created a magnetic latch to prevent that.

Ya I am a tad bit disappointed about the screen, CPU, and GPU being included in the base phone. It makes sense, but the base phone is sure to be $200 - $300 now, and you have to buy a whole new one when you want a new component included in the frame.
@domcarter23278 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, I see why they had to do it, the original endo was quite sophisticated there had to be cuts. Also I don't even know what would happen if someone removed a processing module while powered on. Could cause permanent damage?
@ZettabyteGamer8 жыл бұрын
+Dom Carter I wouldn't think it would cause permanent damage, but who knows. Upgrading the screen, GPU, CPU, and RAM independently were what I was looking forward to most. I guess we can't always get what we want though. ARA is still a very cool project in my eyes, and depending on the components in the frame on the consumer launch I will probably still be buying it.
@domcarter23278 жыл бұрын
+ZettabyteGamer yeah me too but as you say we can't have it all. Maybe those features will be added in future generations. I just got a new phone but I plan on ARA being the last phone I buy after this. I have high hopes haha

I remember way back in 2012 when this one guy posted a simple video showcasing his idea for "phone blocks" and how people said it was impossible. Receiving so much support, that idea turned into this :)
@Ahmadsyar2 жыл бұрын
Well unfortunately, capitalism does not allow such thing. Today in 2022, phone makers wants you to buy new phone everytime instead of fixing it. A sad reality.
@FrankTheTank1072 жыл бұрын
@@Ahmadsyar Damn it. Why did you have to remind that 5 years is all it took for the world to have forgotten this. I've noticed to that we are no longer advancing in technology as fast because it's more profitable to slowly lose the right to repair our devices and make it socially acceptable to buy new.

+Ross v this has been a project for a while now, the premise is that you can change out "blocks" of your phone on the fly to suit it for differant scenarios. For example, a photographer might want to put on a higher res camera and more storage, or when you are playing games you can have a higher power CPU and more battery. Or more general ones, like the second screen showing the weather
@rossv23478 жыл бұрын

@xei8628 жыл бұрын
+Ross v reinstallable modules; camera on your phone break? replace it with a new module. your battery doesn't charge as well as it used to? replace the module. you want louder speakers? buy a second speaker module. Literally ANY feasible feature that you would like on your phone can be user-installed.
@yannick9308 жыл бұрын
The processor ? The GPU ? The screen ? The ram ? Nothing that really matter is replaceble anymore. The project was about keeping a phone longer buy replacing easily the parts that don't work or slow your device in the future. Now it's just a better LG G5. A way to consume more and not to keep your phone longer.

+Wael WM Like I said, you can still upgrade all those components, you just have to do them all at the same time. You can still add extra batteries, new screens, cameras, speakers, finger print scanner, heart rate monitor, and seriously hundreds if not thousands of other things. It's disappointing that the GPU, CPU, battery, and screen are part of the frame, but it makes sense. I totally understand why they did it, but it is disappointing.
