Habibati! I'm taking a trip down memory lane today and rediscovering one of my favorite bands from back in the day, Porcupine Tree! It's all coming back to me, all the reasons I love this band, and seeing them perform a song live which I never did before gave me an entirely new reason to love them.
Let me know in the comments what other songs to check out for them and don't forget to like, subscribe and turn on that notification bell!

You are talking of the drummer. The drummer is called Gavin Harrison. Modern Drummer and Prog magazine voted him 4 times best prog drummer. And i met him ones in a drum clinic. Watched him set up his kit, an could talk a brief time with him. Just a down to earth, hard working craftsman... inspiring at least...Fenomenal, mind blowing as a standard....! Love youre analisis keep up the good work.

I met Mikael Åkerfeldt at Porcupine Tree concert in Stockholm last year. He was nice. And most importantly I got to thank him for his crazy good club-gig-tour-opener at Helitehas, Tallin. Man.. What a show.. o_O Well both were amazing show's but to see Opeth at a small club like Helitehas was something else.

Big Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree fan, brilliant writing. Gavin Harrison is my absolute favorite rock drummer, few drummers can be described as lyrical, but he's one. I've watched clinics he's given, and he talks of giving his hands and feet different time signatures to give some of the feel he goes for. And yes, he has written the book on doing so. Brilliant but down to earth guy. If you haven't listened to Steven's solo stuff after Porcupine Tree, it would be good reaction material. "The Raven Who Refused to Sing" is one of my favorite albums.

I'm 54 years old and I have been a music lover my entire life. I've been listening to British prog rock since my early teens, King Crimson, Yes, Bowie, etc., and I even own a few Steven Wilson albums (including projects like Blackfield)... and yet I was unaware of Porcupine Tree until THIS year! I stumbled onto them after watching one of Gavin's drum clinics on KZbin, where he was playing part of "Anesthetize"... and I was mesmerized! Flash forward a few weeks and I now own (in order of purchase) "Fear of a Blank Planet", "In Absentia", "Deadwing", "Nil Recurring", "Signify", "Stupid Dream" and their live album "Anesthetize". They have become one of my all-time favorite bands, I have been playing them almost continuously.... and I have a theory about why I never discovered them before. Simply put, aside from the deaths of my parents, 2020 has been the worst year of my life. The universe (or god, if you prefer) deliberately kept Porcupine Tree from me until now so there would be SOMETHING enjoyable about 2020, perhaps to give me a reason to hold on. That's probably bullshit, but I DO know discovering Porcupine Tree has been a great joy for me during a difficult time. I hope others will derive the same pleasure and comfort from their music. It's freaking amazing stuff, with each album having a unique flavor.

Oh... and it is notable that I am NOT particularly into drums. I've always been a guitar guy, who also loves piano, sax, etc....but Gavin is next level, with a unique "voice" that is both melodic and machine-like in its complexity. He's a beast on the skins!

Your analogy of painting music is so great. I tried to analyze what the experience of listening to Porcupine Tree is like for my friends. The best I could do was say that the songs are layers. You listen to so many of the songs, and honestly, they are essentially very simple. The chord structures are not traditional, but even when they are, there's always some little hiccup that catches your attention and makes you excited. When you know it's coming the next time, somehow it still seems exciting, because you know it's coming. The anticipation makes it interesting, and it satisfies when it arrives. But the songs are always just built upon other layers. It's a perfect balance. Thanks for such a great analysis. As a drummer myself, I am just in awe at Gavin's talent. He just has this incredible ability to find something unique in every bit of music he plays on, and bring something out of the song/instrumentals that weren't evident.

Great band, great song. I can’t remember if you already did the song Anesthetize, live in Tilburg. My home town by the way. A more than excellent song. I discovered this band last year, never heard of them before, but I’m a big fan now. I love the drumming. It’s so complicated. Steven Wilson’s solo albums also are so very good. Steven Wilson is a musical genius.

In high school, these guys would have been the suave, chill, quietly jazzed, ULTRA coolth group of friends that were COMPLETE, in and of themselves. Even the teachers would have stepped aside as they ghosted through the halls. Cloaked in their own reality. Can I shout out to the drummer? He is MINIMULIST, restrained, laid back even. He seasons the song with just enough. And no more. This reminds me of Prada. There was a time when I worked as a shoe clerk, and I HAD to keep up with what was going on in the fashion industry. It got so I could look in a fashion mag and recognize my fave designer right away. Prada clothes were cut very close to the body, elegant cuts that HUGGED and laid smoothly on the body. Very crisp, tailored. Just frikkin' graceful and cool. This is so CHILL. I feel like I have a higher IQ just from listening. But... I get the feeling that these guys could get up other people's noses real fast.

Helene here. Are you familiar with The Pineapple Thief? I “discovered” both Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief last year on another channel...so somehow they’ve been coupled in my mind. I’m 73, and it’s amazing to me to be discovering such grand music in a genre I NEVER thought I would be appreciating! I went from “no good rock music produced after 1985 or so to HOLY COW....there’s so MUCH great music out there if you look! Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, Tool, Puscifer, Nightwish, Marillion, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Metallica, Soundgarden, Aurora......so many....

"somehow they've been coupled in my mind" Focus on the drum tone and you will realise why ;) I also second the other reply, Leprous is incredible but a much less classic sound, very modern, Malina would be my suggestion to start with.

Something tells me you would love Opeth. A Swedish band that began as a middling (but successful) death metal band and has had a journey of development into a band not unlike this but with a bit more bite. Opeth has great story telling complemented with influences from the whole spectra of music. A good starting point would be "Ghost of perdition". There is a great version from Red Rocks Amphi theatre. Another good live is a version of their "Harlequin Forest" from the Royal Albert Hall, That song is about a man walking out into the forest to kill himself and there he meets the devil and have a chat. The Nordic story telling style is on par with Nightwish.

I felt at the very end of the song, when they fade out with the loop, they should go back into the chorus and bust it out one more time because this song is so epic! Its not the band thats complex...its Gavin Harrison. Watch some of his live performances at "Modern Drummer festival weekend" Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpPSh6x7ftiUf68

So now my 'all-in-one' channel has Porcupine Tree, Nightwish, Dimash. All that is left to complete the circle is Hua Chenyu, the most unique artist out there right now so hoping you will get to him soon

Much fun how you focus on keeping it personal and genuine, digging up memories and all. At least, that's how it comes across. Not just the regular 'Wow, that's amazing, greatest whatever!'. Great band. So totally my kind of music. Fell in love with it while still puzzled but totally intrigued and drawn in by Pink Floyd's musical artworks. Also quite fascinating how these types of bands evolved into a dynamic genre on their own. If you dig PT, Tool must be just around the corner and sorry for being on repeat, but I do think you may be in to some The Gathering as well. You'll love their TG25 concert and probs quite a few of their albums. More enchanting vocals(!), less drum talent prominence, but equally mesmerizing keys and guitar, and ethereal musical paintings. And it will be like ... ehm, new to you iirc. Ask Joey to find our mail correspondence. ;)

Ahh I'm so glad I never had those music arguments. I can't stand people who care more about the artist than the art. If you think he has a big head, you are the one with the big head to think that you are above it. They spend more time reading the wiki of a band than listening to their music because they are scared to like something from the wrong person.
