I wonder if Faramir and Eowyn’s son Elboron married one of Aragorn and Arwen’s daughters, and thus the grandson Barahir wrote the king and queen’s tale partially because he was their descendant.

Intriguing how diametrically opposed are the symbolic meaning behind these 2 rings: the original a symbol forged in the Undying Lands that inspired undying, self-sacrificial love and faithfulness between different peoples vs. the Mt. Doom and middle-earth forged ring of sheer domination and exploitive raw power that has the verry opposite effect on all who are near or involved with it.

The Ring of Barahir is such an interesting contrast with Sauron's ring. It was created long before the One Ring and survived the One Ring by an untold number of years. It was not imbued with anything like a tangible power to dominate the wills of living things, but one could say that as a symbol of love - even self-sacrificial love - it was a locus of a hidden, secret power far greater.

The “never lost”, I feel like, is more an indication of how prized it was to those who had it; just showing it to an elf was evidence of how mortals, though individually short-lived, could remember and honor their bonds even through the ages. The fitting everyone part probably was some cool trick of craft you could only fully appreciate if you’d actually worn it.

Finrod Felagund is my favorite character in the first age (maybe second to Fingolfin). He doesn't have the pride or the hubris of the other elvenkings, and has this unfailing love and loyalty for the race of Men. His self-sacrifice and memory has so much pathos in it. That's why it's sad to see that he sacrificed himself for Beren, but also gratifying that Tolkien says that he "walks beside his father Finarfin in Eldamar." He was re-embodied by the Valar for his great love and loyalty, just like Glorfindel was for his unfailing courage, as he sacrificed himself to slay the Balrog pursuing the refugees from the Fall of Gondolin. I can just imagine the people of Beor's tribe awakening to the fair voice of Felagund, as he found their rude harp, and sang songs of Eldamar and Tirion of long ages gone. I wonder what awoke in their hearts, even if they didn't understand the words.

The ring of Barahir was the most ancient artifact in Middle Earth by the time of the War of the Ring. It, along with the Orthanc and Minas Tirith stones, were the very last things created in Valinor that remained in Middle Earth, long after the Silmarils were claimed by the land, the sea, and the sky. Why do I say most ancient, when we know not either it nor the palantiri were made...? Well, there's no direct evidence, but...the ring figures into the very earliest writings of Tolkien, the Lay of Leithian, which would be part of the foundation of the Silmarillion. In fact, Tolkien's word for the Noldor was his original word for the elves: "Gnomes." And when, as of yet, Finrod was the name Tolkien later changed to Finarfin, the father of Finrod Felagund. The palantiri by contrast, were not created until several years later. Thin evidence? Perhaps. But it's what I like to believe.

I've heard from many Tolkien fans who are MUCH more knowledgeable than I am with the LOTR universe that this ring is the greatest treasure. That it has the power not to destroy but unite for good, has a history which is incredibly vast, and respected by even the highest royalty. That it's even more important than the One Ring. I've never argued their opinions.
@Enerdhil

You need to read the books more. Your friends are messing with you. It was made in the light of Telperion and Laurelin, in Eldamar, but it is not magical at all. It's just creative jewelry.

@furrybogard9724 2 ай бұрын
@@Enerdhil That's not the point. It doesn't need to be magical to have importance. It's like Batman. He has no superpowers, but he's no less important than Superman. He's a symbol. That's the way I see the ring. You don't have to agree with my statement. I could care less. It's just what I agree with, my opinion. Besides, I never said they were my friends. And I've read the books, a few times in fact. I said I was a fan. Go elsewhere and piss in someone else's cheerios and talk down to them.

@@Enerdhil I appreciate that. It's no worries. I'm just a simple fan of the universe, nothing more. But I have somewhat of an understanding of lore, more than most of the casual movie viewers who've never read the works. It sounded like someone was making an assumption when they've never met me, it came off a bit snarky. When I said I had heard it from people at conventions, these fans know the novels front to back by heart. They can speak Elvish. Heck they can even draw maps to almost entirety from memory. They're the ones who've said it to me, and it made sense. That's why I said what I did.
@Enerdhil
@Enerdhil 2 ай бұрын
You obviously know a lot about the lore. So when I read that those experts said, "this Ring is the greatest treasure. That it has the power not to destroy but unite for good, has a history which is incredibly vast, and respected by even the highest royalty," I am honestly confused where they got some of those ideas. The Ring of Barahir is definitely not the greatest Ring in the Legendarium. The One Ring holds that distinction Even if Fëanor made it as a birthday present for Finrod, that wouldn't necessarily give it any special powers. Vilya, Nenya, and Narya all have power to preserve Elven Realms, but that is because Sauron's power is imbued within those rings. The same is true for all the other Rings of Power. What power or Whose power is in the Ring of Barahir? It is true that it is a great treasure for anyone who owns it. Its history IS incredibly vast, going back to the Years of the Trees. And it is definitely respected by the highest royalty, especially the King of Gondor and Arnor, not to mention Galadriel. All those things I agree with.

To me this is the coolest object in Tolkien's legendarium. The throughline of it being passed down through the ages highlights my favorite parts of Tolkien's story. And I think he intentionally made it that way. If you follow that ring you follow the true heroes of his story.

I bought a Sterling Silver version of Aragorn’s ring online from Noble Collection back in 2006. Still have it!!! Never wear it though. Didn’t know it had something to do with the LOTR lore. Just thought it looked cool.

In any adaptation of _Beren of Luthien_ the Ring of Barahir should be the same version worn by Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) in Peter Jackson's _Lord of the Rings_ Trilogy. That's why I want Warner Bros. to buy the rights to the _Silmarillion._ 🙂

Crazy to think how long a single object is kept safe. Also want to mention again a hopeful soon personal Valar ranking video 😊 I am so curious to hear who your favorite Valar are and why. Example: Aule is my favorite because he created the Dwarves, yet had 3 deciples turn to evil - so there is conflict there. I could go on and on, but we want to hear you do that!
