Surprisingly, this song was actually inspired by a friend of one of the band members. The friend and his wife had had an abortion and they had begun really regretting what they had done. A counselor suggested they treat it like a death in the family and they did. They got a tombstone, held a funeral, and mourned their loss of their baby, Lucy.

This song often makes me cry; My grandma's name is Lucy and just last year she was diagnosed with Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer in connective tissue. Then this song, more than ever became really hard because I had started planning that I would sing this at her funeral. Fast forward a few weeks to the surgery date, and the fact that she was in surgery at 76 was enough on it's own to scare me because of the risks at her age. My grandma has always meant more to me than anyone in the world. She helped raise me when I grew up in an otherwise abusive household so she was like a second mom to me. The hours crawled by of her being in surgery, and soon I get the news: "She's going to be fine, and in fact, we removed all of the cancer, so this isn't going to be what will take her life. She's strong, she's healthy, and has a long life left ahead of her, she just need to keep her for a few days for monitoring". The best news of my life! Anyway so this song brings back memories for me, some good/some bad, but in all I guess I don't have to have those bad memories because she's okay now so I don't need those thoughts. It's just always been my dream she live long enough that when I have kids, that she's around to watch them grow. Thanks for those of you who cared to take the time to read this... just needed to get it off my chest.

This song reminds me of my mom... we got into a fight, and I told her I hated her. I left and didn't takk to her for months. The last time I saw her, she was sedated, going in for emergency surgery. She never woke up. I would give anything... ANYTHING, to tell her I love her... to hug her... to apoligize to her... to see her one last time. I just finished listening to the whole album Awake, and it is definitely my favourite Skillet album. Almost every song bought tears to eyes, reading every comment on how people have lost someone they care about and getting the feeling that my through is clogging up... Skillet did an amazing job on this album and they have helped countless people get through their toughest times. “You will lose someone you can’t live without,and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. Visiting this song again in 2018. In a sense, it reminds me of my dad. He passed away almost three years ago. We never had the best relationship, however, when we tried to be together more he ended up with leukemia. Within three months, he was gone. It was hard to watch such a proud man dwindle quickly. I know he’s watching over me now and I honestly wish we got to spend more time together. There’s a lot of regret that I must live with. However, I can’t wait to see him in heaven again. If you’re going through a difficult situation, I pray that God helps you out, is with you always, and that you are able to find rest.

I said that her parents would see the horrible things they were doing to her. But when I went to check up on her later that day, all I saw when I got into the house was her dead, bruised, pale body lying on the floor... Her parents were arrested, but they're being bailed out soon. But I promise that I will not let her parents live in happiness. And I intend on keeping that promise.

Which are regret and sorrow about losing a loved one. To comment along the lines of "well actually, this song isn't about that" on a personal message is kind of a dick move. I would have been there for her when she was in her house. But her last words were "I love my grandchildren all the time" so i miss her very much. I had a sibling who introduced me to this band more than 10 years. I came across just the name of this song but didn't think anything of it. Later a few years after, I actually listened to it for the first time, and like I stated in a previous comment, started to feel really sad and started to cry. I asked my sibling what the song was about because I had a feeling that it wasn't just about a couple who hurt each other, like I had originally thought. My sibling told me with a concerned look that she couldn't tell me now at my age (5th grade at the time). Years later after rediscovering this song, I now know the meaning and man, it impacted me, both the meaning, and how a relative of mine didn't want to have to explain to a little kid the heavy and messed up (the cause of Lucy's death) concepts of the song. It's such a powerful song.
