When asked how should one worship Him, Lord Krishna answers in the 9th chapter of the Bhagwat Gita, "Patram Pushpam Phalam Toyam" meaning that He is happy if the devotee offers Him a leaf, a flower, a fruit or some water. What does Lord Krishna mean by that?
̌Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba beautifully explains the inner significance and meaning of "Archanam" the fifth path among the 9 paths of devotion (Shravanam, Kirtanam, Smaranam, Padasevanam, Archanam, Vandanam, Dasyam, Sneham, Atmanivedanam.) Swami says,
Here is the experience of Ms Vijayalakshmi who used service as a way of making the true offerings of a leaf, a flower, a fruit and water. Having grown up all her childhood around Swami, she suddenly had a period of disconnect in her life. Yearning to get reconnected, she did something that is so admirable and worthy of emulation that is in perfect sync with Swami's definition of the meaning of the leaf, flower, fruit and water offerings.
"What is 'pathram'? It is not the 'leaf' that you see around you. The inner meaning is that your body itself is the leaf. Flower is not the one in the plants but it is the flower of your heart, "Hridhaya Pushpam". 'Phalam' is not the ordinary fruit but 'Manophalam' (the fruit of your mind). 'Thoyam' means water but what is referred to here is not the water from the river or tap. It refers to the tears of joy welling up within you from a sincere and prayerful heart."
