ARB Twin Compressor Upgrades - How we Built an Overlander

In this video, we get a much needed Air Compressor upgrade! While attending Overland Expo West 2019 we scored a sweet deal on an ARB Twin Motor Compressor which will give us a much-needed boost in CFM for Airing our Big MPT81's from 10 back up to 55psi.
And because so much of our Overland Rig is dependant on AirPower we will be leaving our original Viair system in place and running this new ARB Compressor in Random. This will allow our off-road home to be more self-sufficient and self-reliant with redundant air supplies.
I originally planned to have a York Engine-driven compressor supplement our small Viair compressor, but it did not get installed before we left Canada and I was not sure about the engine oil lubricated nature of that beast, I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with filtering that air and using that as our water pressure-driven air.
So while at Overland Expo 2019 we got a Twin Motor 5 CFM 150psi 100% duty cycle 12 Volt compressor and while I could not install it fully on this day, it looks super promising that it will cut our time to air up to 30% of what it was before.

A little advise on your ARB compressor. I have a 97 F-250 7.3, and I have been Overlanding South America for 5 years (actually I'm in Montevideo Uruguay shipping back to the states). I have an ARB twin compressor. While trying to cross the BR-319 in Brazil (a crazy road that crosses straight through the Amazon) my compressor failed. ARB was great and mailed me a brand new one- no questions asked! But I figured out the reason. The Brass filters on the intake allowed micro particulates to enter the cylinder and put scratches on the cylinder wall... so the piston would never get to 150psi and just run and run... getting hotter and hotter until the bolt on the crankshaft broke. And when I was at altitude (+3000 m) in the Andes, the air is MUCH thinner and would never get to 150psi. So i put a Variable pressure regulator with a double pole double throw switch to shut down the ARB at either 100psi or the original 150psi along with a 12volt fan to keep the temp under control. But I think the BEST thing to do would be to run the intake through a real filter. Its hard to keep those little brass disks clean... especially how you have it mounted.. But in All I love that compressor, great choice!
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the good advise... The box where ours is mounted is inside our cabin, I'm hoping that it's getting cleaner air for that reason. And I do already have a computer controlled pressure regulator that controls when the compressor runs, I have maximum runtime allowances too! But very good to know... I'll see if I can get better filters on there.

I have it sitting on the shelf, so it seems like a waste to not use it. But with the hassles of oiled compressors and the fact that I'd need to fabricate an engine bracket makes me wonder if it's needed.

ARB Twin Motor Compressor is perhaps one of the pricer options. Under consideration should be suspension and horn compressors such as the Vixen. How much use it will get also is an important factor. I have mounted two 11gal tanks under my truck chassis adjacent to the driveshaft. Considering another given there is space. I like your rear bumper volume tank, clever. My noisy air compressor is my issue now. I have got a low-cost Craigslist Chicago Pneumatic 4hp\2 gal unit that is annoyingly loud. Nobody is going to like hearing this run within earshot. Looking into sound-proofing a cover box or compartment. For filling the tankage I am wondering if a very cheap Chinese tire inflator compressor might not be the answer given how infrequently I initially plan to use tire inflation\tool usage. Eventually, I will have some pneumatic actuators but again used infrequently.

I love the mechanical hand.. can you link where you got it? Also, why do you lower the air pressure in your tires for sand?
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 3 жыл бұрын
It is necessary to lower the tire pressure to increase the footprint, creating more surface area to spread out the weight for increased floatation. You can see the difference it makes between 70PSI and 20PSI in our earlier video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqvLp5SKgMuMgc0

I'm considering a clever alternative (in theory, at least) to trad beadlock for holding my 40" on 17": Coyote Boltless Beadlock System, or any of its Australian equivalents. Internal, and double (i.e. locks both beads). DOT approved, for you Americans, thus probably OK here in Europe, too. Something for your vehicle, @Everlanders? A good idea? Any thoughts, from any of you?

If the Viar did not cut in for 3 minutes that means the ARB had that tyre up to around 45 PSI before the Viar woke up, I know the ARB Twin Portable will Air Up a 37" Tyre from 15 to 35psi in under 90 seconds, But Can you imagine how fast that would be if you ran TWO ARB Twins, LOL, Your Truck would float away like the Goodyear Blimp, lol, Seriously though you should shut off that Viair because running both it and the ARB is Going really beat up your batteries, because the ARB will pull about 64 Amps and the Viair must be pulling somewhere between 30 to 45/50Amps. Nice video and well done,
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 4 жыл бұрын
We have 900Ah of Lithium (LiFePo4) Batteries, they run our AC unit pulling 80 amps for 5 hours without batting an eye. And agreed, getting a tire to 35 is the easy part, it slows down when getting them up to 60. And yeah, I've got the Viair on a separate system now, running only our water.

It has since caused me a ton of problems, the pressure switch doesn't always trip and then the compressor runs untill the over pressure valves release, the relay contacts burn up and pop fuses... I've managed to find a replacement pressure switch finally and hope it will be reliable again.
@user-tv8sm6so9y
@user-tv8sm6so9y 2 жыл бұрын
@@Everlanders Yeah mine is the portable one I just bought 2 pressure switches as well, I replaced the factory one and that wasn't the problem, it worked when you first turned it on it ran for about 10 seconds and then shut off and I thought it was full but then I heard the over pressure release valves hissing, I undone the braided hose to the Airline coupling and nothing came out so I removed the Compressor Feed hose to the Tank and it fired up right away, Turns out that moisture had Blocked the Tank outlet hose that connects to the Airline Coupling so I removed that line and cleaned it out and then put it back together and it behaves like new again, So you could have a similar issue with yours, So just bare that in mind when you do the fix, good luck.
