Does the kit come with the Spanner wrench or could you recommend where to get one?

ARB includes 2 spanner wrench, 1 in each hardware kit.

I don’t understand why they do it via preload. I’d rather want to install longer springs with the right rating for the desired lift height

A longer spring designed for the same lift height would likely have the same effective preload and provide less range of ride height adjustment as coil bind would be a concern. This would essentially would force them to make a different spring for almost every lift height and weight load, which makes little sense when they can get the same heights or weight allowances out of one spring. These BP51 coilovers use a spring that allows them to work just as well on a stock truck at close to stock height as a fully armored and loaded truck with 2-3" of lift, which not only keeps manufacturing costs, makes life a lot easier for the end user particularly if the weight of the rigchanges. Even brands like Dobinsons, will use a single universal coilover spring on a threaded body where it makes sense as if you can get the same effective spring forces as multiple springs with just a few turns of a preload collar

ARB had the adjusters on the res on the prototype, but changed that for some reason. Too bad.

Our guess is to make the adjusters more effective. Since they are an internal bypass we would bet the adjusters did not have as much effective range since oil flow ends up slowing down so much after making it out of the bypass ports and into the reservoirs. Having the adjuster right at the bypass port means you have maximum control over the flow in the main ride zone so they can have a greater range of effective adjustment which was critical since these were designed for vehicles that may vary greatly in terms of overall weight. They wanted these shocks to work just as well on something stock weight as they do on something with hundreds of pounds of constant load. So what they sacrificed on ease of adjustment, they probably more than made up for in effective adjustment. Of everything we tested these seem to have the widest range of compression and rebound adjustment, so they definitely met their goals on that front.

How do these do with full ARB armor and skids?

Depends on the vehicle as each vehicle has different suspension. If you have a Tacoma, based on the year there are specific part numbers but effectivity on a coilover you can adjust preload or upgrade the spring rates based on total weight support needed.
