Hi.. how often I should water in spring,summer and fall TIA
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
I wish to give you a solid answer with numbers, but it all depends on rain amount, season and area you live. If you didn’t have rain in 5-6 days and your arborvitaes are well established, I would water deeply. My soil is sandy and I need to water more frequently than folks in clay soil. If you have recently planted trees and drought is there, I would water every 4th day, again depending on your soil…

I would like to have leland cypress on my home property. Facing south acting as a north whind shield and privacy screen. Leland cypress grow very fast snd the foliage is beautiful. Out in full sun on open ground the giant thuga make an impressive stand. Thank you for this valuable information.

My arborvitaes are receiving strong afternoon sun for 3 hours. The rest is partial sun. there are different trees growing and throwing some shade onto that area of my garden. I would plant them into your own soil, that is the general consensus now. And top dress the area with compost. I might make a video how I do trimming, thank you for suggesting it. Good luck with your arborvitaes! Oh, I never heard about not letting them set cones, that is new to me. I will do some research on it though. thanks.

Yours are so healthy , you just want to touch them lol , so bouncy. Could you grow them so well In containers also?

I think that they can grow for some time in containers, but won't thrive.

I've had a hard time with my arborvitaes, the deer ate 6 of them, we have been doing miracle grow fertilizing and they started to bounce back. the most recent is that I accidently mixed bug and weed spray and got it on the trees. now they are turning brown but only on one side. I hope they bounce back. I also planted another 10 but I cut the root ball down, possible too much and they are also browning in the center... Im all thumbs but apparently non are green

Hm, we all make mistakes in the garden. The true gardener learns from them (looks like you are this type) and perseveres. If I were you I wouldn't trim healthy roots during replanting, unless they are damaged or you are trying to control the size of the plant in the pot. I see people use black plastic netting over their arborvitaes. It doesn't look bad and deer stays away. Hope it helps!

Olga, would you , please, advise on how that plastic Netting attached? Is it like a wrap of each individual tree in the hedge? Or like a close fence. Thank you in advance ❤

Is it possible to keep the arborvitae as a small plant with trimming? Maximum of 4’?

So I planted my arborvitae’s 3.5 feet apart. Do you think that’s ok for a privacy hedge or is that too far apart? Love your emeralds
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
You planted them perfectly well for the hedge. In a long run you will end up with the best hedge, you would need to wait a bit longer for your arborvitaes to close up, but they will be not congested, will have plenty of space and light to live happily ever after. :)

After watching this video, I realized that I messed up with my 'North Pole' arbovitae at the start. Had I known this information beforehand, I would have allowed only one leader to grow when I first planted the tree but because I didn't do this, there are now 4 leaders growing together in a perfect square for the last 3 years. So I imagine that it would be difficult to prune off three at this stage without compromising the look of the tree because it has grown substantially by at least 2 feet. My question is...if I prune off three leaders at this point, could I get it to form one leader and fill out eventually or should I stick with the 4 that are already there and make the best of it?
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
If your arborvitaes don't suffer from winter bends in their structure, I would leave them to be. Or you can just snip those top leaders without any cosmetical change, really just the tops and they will eventually let the main leader take over.

I would say just over 2 feet. Which now I consider too narrow. Best would be close to 3 feet for a great, long lasting hedge. You would need to wait a bit for those trees to close in.
