I found out why this type of grey has a slight blue tint to them (slate grey) and it's because moon light appears bluish to the human eye and adding some blue into grey aids in night time concealment. This also explains why Army ACUs do surprisingly well at night especially in an urban environment where as in other settings this camouflage pattern makes you look like a Kindergarten art project made with Elmer's glue and some gravel. Realistically, this color DOES NOT help you blend in with the populace. the best camouflage to blend in with the populace is to just wear what the people wear.

+Phillip Wellendorf How does this compare to the haley gray? I find that coyote brown/tan are pretty decent "urban" colors considering how many people wear Carharts, suede etc. But also lots of people wear black/gray technical jackets/fleece nowadays.

Rusty Shackleford I do like coyote brown/tan and a slightly darker khaki color quite a bit too. I also noticed when I wear my Drac jacket in the crocodile color, it seems to blend in much better than wolf gray in urban areas that have incandescent lighting. I have looked into a two-part article written by mil-spec monkey called "A Real Urban Grey?" He showed that wolf gray and other "tactical" grays failing in multiple settings due to the overuse of blue, which makes me feel a little embarrassed for defending the color. Elephant gray and taupe grey are grays I found to be decently versatile, but again no gray can ever truly be "universal." This gray-train will reach it's end soon enough and a new color will sweep the tacticool market, just like how all trends tend to go.

Great articles. I read them recently and I hope more people get to check them out. That elephant gray is fantastic. I remember reading a bunch of times that the USMC gave up on the idea of an Urban MARPAT because they found that MARPAT Desert was effective enough in those environments. Personally, I hope the next major conflict takes place in a Winter/Arctic environment. Specifically because I want mall-ninjas to tell me that since Coyote brown and Multicam (known for and popular because of their universal colour and cost effectiveness) aren't that great in the colder barren environments, and the newer Wolf Grey and Ranger Green and Tan 499 create too much contrast against an open snow covered environment, I should be buying brand new white equipment, overgarments, and painting my rifle in Rustoleum white spray primer in order to better 'blend in' with my operational environment/fenced in Backyard.

Plain grey is better than blue but one of the things that makes humans stand out the most is the human form, so having a pattern to break up and hide that form is important. Most of the "urban camoflage" has (weirdly) a curvy leafy grey pattern on it. Urban camoflage should have much larger/bolder, rectilinear stripes, massively pixelated diagonals, and perhaps even a part of brand or two to look like a poster stuck on a wall. Plain grey is only okay if you are walking accross plain grey.

Why would you want a single company to patent a shade of gray??? It’s a damn color and let other people make new stuff in the color rather than Arc’teryx LEAF exclusively have “rights” to it for 20 years. Imagine if someone patented coyote tan or OD green…

Nice to see the thought you put into to desgin. But, one aspect I'd like to see added to your jackets listed specs is how cold are they rated for? The down filled jackets...are they good down to -25c? -30c?? Important to me as a buyer and someone livingt in Canada were there are the odd 1-2 weeks where it has dropped down to that temp range....Canada Goose jackets lists temp ratings....

No you cannot, and Tiffany did not. A color can be trademarked (not patented), which is completely different, and even then, severely limited as far as legal protection and use of the trademark.

I understand the idea but color is only one factor of camo. Far more important and especially in an urban environment things like poor movement and behaviour decisions will reveal you long before the shade of grey you have on.
