Video shows padding beads using 6010 rods. This is a fundamental exercise that most welding schools use. I think using 6010 rods for padding beads is a better choice than 6013 welding rods because 6010 is the rod used for open butt root passes and that is the skill needed to get a good paying welding job.

that reminds me of a story. on a written pipefitter test. the question asks to calculate how many gallons of water are in 20 feet of 6 inch pipe. Fitter scratches his head and says " I dont even know how long a gallon of water is"

Looking back on it, this man and his free content seriously taught me more about welding than my high school AND college welding instructors ever did up here in ND. i would go home and binge on his content and then go to class the next day and practice it. Now 10 years later im a home owner and landlord. God bless.

You say this is the second or third thing you do in welding school, but that is the first thing I did in my course. So far I've only worked with 6010 1/8 and 5/32 first on flat plate, then horizontal, and currently on horizontal fillet. About 6 weeks in maybe? Haven't been keeping track. Your videos have been a huge help as have Steve Bleile. Both of you are so friendly it's very welcoming.

Thank you for another great video. You inspired me to break out some of my seldom-used 3/32" 6011 and start a pad. Good tip on using a bucket of water; keeps the pad from getting hotter and hotter and hotter. This allowed me to run bead after bead, meanwhile, my little Lincoln 180 amp buzz box, (with home-built rectifier), was getting hotter and hotter and hotter. Don't know by how much I exceeded the 20% duty cycle, but I still couldn't put my hand on the transformer 10 minutes after I called it quits! Doh!

I had a flashback to 1984 watching this video. You sound exactly like my old welding teacher, Terry Block, at San Diego City College. He started us off on 6011, and after we got comfortable with striking an arc he switched us to 6010, because that's what they used in the shipyards. I remember one night he had me run 6013, just to see what it was like, then it was back to 6010. Next was 7018. Another night he gave me some 7024 and 7028 to practice with. It ran like butter. So easy. The it was back to 6010 roots and 7018 stringers and cover passes.

I love to hear the old school stories like that. I heard of a brazing test on round stock where brazing overlay was done and then the part was chucked up in a lathe and cut till smooth...if there were inclusions, you failed. how bout this one...at my school we had to weld a 4 foot long vertical tee. Guys who like to hang around the coke machine too much were made to wear their 4 foot tee joint on their neck anytime they were outside the booth.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jody has some background in education or pedagogical theory. He's always talking about intention, taking chances, connecting one lesson to the one before and after it, etc., and his instruction seems very well planned (as if with a consistent focus on intention and learning objectives). This would have a lot to do with why his videos are so informative and effective. It's refreshing :-)

Thank you so much for your great instruction. I have always stuck to 6013 & 7018 for farm and my rural machine shop but I acquired over a thousand pounds of 3/32” 6010 rods still sealed in cans at an auction. I was determined to learn how to use them. I actually love them now and since I watched your videos I’m improving. About to weld up a coral with 2 3/8” schedule 80 pipe. Should I continue using the 3/32” rod or switch to 1/8”? Thanks again, Randy

Great video, it helped me out a lot, but i have a few questions. What kind of current did you set your welder on? DCEP, DCEN, or AC? What was your amperage set on? I usually have mine on at 100A.
@DuchessofEarlGrey
@DuchessofEarlGrey 9 жыл бұрын
Chris Sedberry DCEP is required for 6010. The last digit not only tells the electrode coating's composition (in this case, cellulose and sodium) but it gives the required current as well. Amperage requirements are affected by the diameter of the electrode. According to a chart I was given for school, 100A is only good for 1/8" 6010. 100A is too hot for 3/32" and too cold for 5/32".

We were joking about this at work: How much weld do you need to deposit to get anywhere? Which led to the idea of having a scale, so you could weigh each student's practice piece before and after... SO, one of the requirements of a class might be that you have to burn up fifty pounds of rod or something. Five kilos is a lot!

@@reptilianash3653 it really depends on your perspective. I took a welding job out of school and decided there was too much focus on “time in” vs actual skill. Finished the project that company was working on and quit. I gained a lifelong skill and I’ve used it over the years for personal and side jobs, it’s more than paid for itself, not to mention I did pay off my student loans using only income from welding. It was worth it to me, 100%

When the camera shows that welding you see a beautiful pool. Is that what you see with your eyes through your helmet ? I think my helmet seems brighter than that and i wonder if i need to get darker filtering ?

You can easily change the shade of your helmet filter! I think all helmets come with a Shade 10, but you can buy anything from Shade 5 to 13 or 14 I think. Just go up one number, they're only a few dollars. You might want to change for different situations, so it's well to have a little collection of them, plus a bunch of the clear cover pieces which tend to get burnt up.

Try wearing sunglasses below your auto hood 👍🏻 or yellow tinted shades, even tinted reading glasses, mess with the settings, try shining bright LED on the work area..

Are you using the 6010 with Ac or DC? I read somewhere that 6010 was for use with DC current and 6011/6013 was used with AC current.

DC electrode positive. you are right 6010 is only for DC so if all you have is an AC stick welder, then 6011 works pretty well.

Hello Jody your 3 steps Walz is measured at 72 bpm with a metronome (;)) I am (slowly)beginning to understand that technique (how do you name the different "walks" ) It is used for "open root" is not it ? but , is there a "keyhole" when welding flat like there ? ( is the key hole a real opening ? I thought it was just the shape of the hot imprint of the puddle ?) things seem to be way more subtle that I envisaged, but indeed when the job begins to flow , one feel the puddle manipulation and that works only within a certain temperature margin and a certain speed. Small sticks are not ideal I will use 1/8 to train. is it necessary to obtain those even spaced "washers" ? is it the proof the 3 steps action was well done ? in brief what is the goal ? I understand you take half of the pudling and spread it forward. is it ? I am really unsure that the inverter helps to learn , if it raise the amps when the stick get close . May be I am wrong, maybe also the inverter can be set with that control on off for the learning curve I apologize for my beginner questions, not asking mean no answers ;)
