Watching this video seriously helped me pass the final welding exam in college back in December. I know it says 6G but our final exam was 5G where we had to use the hand torch to bevel the pipe that was sitting in jack stands and grind down the bevels on the pipes and put a landing on them as well and the instructor would fit them together and thanks to watching the videos that you posted really had helped me.

Mate, I'm a senior citizen of the welding fraternity and now live in the US. I did my apprenticeship in the UK, where I worked large construction (think 8 inch steel, all low hydrogen) Then specialized in Tig and worked on many stainless pieces for nuclear work, dressed as a flour grader in a clean room. I additionally did my asme 9 test piece for the mild steel side of things and a bunch of other things. After Europe, I went to Australia where my qualification became welder first class. I've recently got back into it and have to say, I thoroughly enjoy your vid's. There's a lot of bad advice out there, as I'm sure you know, but without appearing like I'm kissing butt, your vid's are great. Keep 'em coming.

Thanks for this video! I'm currently preparing to do the 6G test right now and I'm finding it very useful. It's worth pointing out that in Europe we use lower amps (about 60 amps average) due to the 50 Hz of our electricity supply instead of 60 Hz in America.
@massimo79mmm2 жыл бұрын
can you explain why the different frequency can alter the amperage? are you using transformer welder? with inverter welders the output should be the same
@MegaWayneD2 жыл бұрын
@@massimo79mmm Blimey! I posted this comment 8 years ago! At the time I was using a transformer welder which wasn't particularly well regulated. I've since invested in an inverter welder which is much better.

Simple solution how to handle too big key hole is using a remote controller.....i use it always.We in Finland are in use almost without exception the remote control to adjust the amps. Awesome videos and will definitely help many novice welders around the world.
@runeski748 жыл бұрын
@johnwilkins if you fit the pipe correctly you should be able to push your rod into the gap and just drag your root. If you start to notice the keyhole is getting bigger ( gap too wide, heat too hot, land too thin ) that's when you have to start whipping it a bit like he does a lot in this video. I never have to whip when I'm doing a test, because I make sure my fit up is perfect. If your going to do your best weld for a test you have to start out with a perfect fit. That's half the battle.

I like to see you us some of the UA test specs, that's what all Union pipe welders will be testing to. Just try to remember to touch a little on the thickness of the root and cap reinforcement heights. @iw63boomer9 жыл бұрын
Blake Richa93 Keep after it! I teach at a tech college, and for a joint like this I have students start with a lower amperage, then once they "get it" they move the amps up. I teach that with a couple of different joints in different processes, so that when they get to the pipe tests they are used to thinking like that. Practice on plate in 3G if that helps. Let us know how you do!

Would you say that the keyhole towards the end of the tack at 1:33 is about right, or getting big? I'm not much of a welder, nor do I weld pipe, but I sometimes weld gaps, and if I was welding that, my instinct would be that I would be about to totally lose the puddle and burn through. Towards the beginning of the tack, it looks fine, but then it seems to grow... and grow... and grow...
@weldingtipsandtricks11 жыл бұрын
I would say at 1:33 that the keyhole was starting to get a little big but still manageable. I would not feel like I had to bail out yet. just a little more whip action and maybe make small ovals

Question guys, im in welding school now and up until 6010 open root I have had very little trouble, but now my instructors are telling me that while my root looks good, it's not convex enough, from what I can see my root looks very similar to this, with slight convexity not flush, but what they're asking me for is nearly 1/8 convexity, when I try to do so I end up over heating the metal and the keyhole blows out and the root stops forming and just starts becoming a big mess on my root side, I've tried lowering the amperage, hasn't helped
@davesisco46378 жыл бұрын
Just a little more of a tip , start your welding of the root at your 3 & 9 o'clock tacks going to 12 . Heat travels up and that will eliminate the eating out at the top . Plus it will have you all heated up for the bottom which will give you more of a chance for getting the right push thru .

what ever works for you is the correct answer to your question, BUT if your fit is right ( proper land, bevel, and gap ) you shouldnt have to do much movement at all. I can't get my 6010 to weld right. If I turn it up high enough to stop snuffing out it's way too hot to weld. It's a DC machine (Vulcan 220) . If tried ep and en. I've also got some 6011s they don't really work great either. Does anyone have suggestions?
