I love how Hiryu's response to a giant aerial battleship is "You're sending a toy into battle?" when he's just a single man with a plasma not-actually-a-sword. Old video game protagonists are ridiculously hardcore.

One of the most amazing feat. in this game is that there are 4 languages used ! : Japanese, english, chinese-madarin, and russian ! I have asked to a russian lady if it was russian, she told me yes :) Michiel, the prime-minister of Russian Federation is saying something like "we will never allow this/that to happen". Just incredible, a 5 stars game, more than a legend !

it really is a massive tech demo for what the CPS could pull off. The amount of custom coding and animation that went into ensuring Hiryu's stance is consistent regardless of what surface he's on is incredible. Horizontal surfaces, vertical surfaces, all sorts of different angles, even the inverse gravity segments - the animation code handles them all gracefully. No mean feat in a pre-Inverse Kinematics world.

Strider is most definitely one of the best games Capcom gave us back in the old days. While the franchise is best known for this arcade game, it originally started as a manga back in 1988, which told the story of Strider Hiryu. His name literally means "Flying Dragon". I love this game. And I think it still holds up wonderfully today. Yes, the controls have aged a bit, and it doesn't seem as responsive. But otherwise, it's still a great game after many years later. Eventually, Capcom made the long overdue sequel to this game, Strider 2. And I saw trailers for the new Strider game by Double Helix. And it looks pretty awesome. I hear that it's already out. So I'll definitely be trying out that game when I get a chance to.

The plot in this game is absolutely brilliant, if anyone have missed it due to poor dialogue scene management. By the end of the game the Kzach minister, Amazon leader woman and Pirate-like military leader are all, in a way, hoping for Strider to free the world from Grandmaster Meio's tyrany (All Sons of old Gods, Die!"). The game is a clear criticism against fascism. The fact that the game imediatelly starts with Strider invading with furious speed a heavily armed, futuristic and corrupt Kzach republic and with absolutely zero background story or prologue... is just magnificent.

Against fascism? I think you missed the conspicuously anti-Marxist messaging and symbolism in this game. "All sons of old gods" must die is in fact a Marxist slogan. Decimating tradition and Christianity is a tenet of early twentieth century Bolshevism and to this day a hallmark of MArxist theory. The Jewish Bolsheviks exterminated gentiles from Ukraine to KAZAKHSTAN annihilating Christians (and Muslims in all fairness) in the name of atheism -JEWISH atheism

@NitroNovaMusic
@NitroNovaMusic 3 ай бұрын
Sorry for replying after 7 years but I wanted to fill readers in on the politics of the game. As you might've guessed, the obvious patriot nazi earlier in the replies is making shit up; "All sons of old gods" as a quote is exclusively found in Strider alone, and it purely refers to Meio's plan to replace the population with a race that obeys his command. With that said, Strider is not pro-communist and the story is not about opposing fascism; Russia and the Kazakh Federation are portrayed as cruel and controlling, and were the first footholds for Meio's rise to tyranny. Faceas Clay, one of the main antagonists of the manga, is also affiliated with the Kazakh Federation despite being based in Los Angeles, and shares the belief that humanity needs to be controlled. The game just doesn't talk about fascism and communism is portrayed negatively even before Meio arrived. Strider as a series opposes forceful oppression/control of civilizations, in general, and it's *really* not that deep or complex about it. It's anti-totalitarianism, anti-dictator, and yes, it's anti-soviet communism. Keep in mind that there are other types of communism, such as anarcho-communism, which is not one involving an oppressive body over the population, so calling Strider "entirely anti-communism" wouldn't be accurate. Just so we're clear: 1) Strider as a series is obviously anti-fascist, too, for obvious reasons. Meio could just as easily have created a christofascist USA that Hiryu would've decimated with cool explosions. 2) I don't want to hear some centrist babbling about horseshoe theory, go post that on Twitter where bots can call you president of mensa.

The 80s and 90s was such an innovative time for the imagination. Futuristic worlds back then had so much thought and heart put into it. Nowadays games are copy and paste formats of each other, with less imagination in mind and more about selling the same product and cashing in on trends and crazes. Everyone seems like a robot now… Innovation is dying.

So true, but there are a few hidden gems in the modern era like Souls and the new Doom games (alongside indie games) But yeah, I totally agree. The AAA industry really lost its touch on creativity. It’s crazy to think with limited tech, they were able to create something magical. Now it’s all about attracting as many customers as possible. I hope there’s a Renaissance but I’m not sure that’s happen anytime soon unless something changes.

With the exception of Demon’s Souls, I kind of don’t understand why I bought one if there are so few games coming out. @@zetagundam20x I honestly hope so, it’ll be good for the industry, it’ll remind the corporations not to saturate the market with garbage just like the 80s. Honestly when the market crashed back in the 80s it reminded the corporations that the people had the power, right now they’re abusing the system with all these micro transactions. I blame the Gen X parents for giving into their bratty little kids and buying whatever they want, they are a big part of the problem and why GTA 5 online and battle royals stays around
@zetagundam20x
@zetagundam20x 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hi-Five-Ghost It will. To me, the corporations will try to throw in every resource to make their games good (but not good for the gamers). In fact, we’re seeing this with several games where the budget is spent primarily on graphics and less on gameplay mechanics (refer to Cyberpunk 2077). Eventually, this strategy will fail and you’ll likely to start seeing a crash once the money has run out. Many governments and corpos try to do this and it only makes the problem worse. You’re also slowly seeing it with the movie industry. We got it too good man, sometimes I wonder if we really deserved to get games as good as Strider. Gen X and beyond lack so much accountability cause of the Boomers and what I mean by that is that you simply can’t slap several dollars into something to solve a problem. Solving a problem requires creativity, passion, and a common goal. Not a bunch of dollary-doos.

Shane Bales Are you really denying that this game was innovative and radical by the standards of the time? There were a number of firsts in this game. How many games can you think of that featured multilingual voice clips, a main character that can cling to both walls and ceilings, accelerate while running down inclines, and do all this while being upside down? As far as action games went very little, if anything, came close to this back then. Most games were very flat in comparison.

Echelon, those things may well be true, but I strongly argue that Revenge of Shinobi is a better game overall, also a 1989 release. Ok sure so there's no defying gravity or anything, but there's an excellent player performance based power-up that also allows you to block while moving forward; a timed double jump with arch kunai throw that can be activated at any pt during the jump; and 4 useful and creative ninjutsu to use during gameplay. There's also nice touches like not taking damage from an enemy that's beneath if you were to fall downwards. Just incredibly well designed levels offering solid, fluid, challenging gameplay. Also boasting an excellent soundtrack to boot with superior sound effects. I also found elements of cheap design in Strider so that doesn't help its case for timelessness in my personal experience.
@echelon2k8
@echelon2k8 6 жыл бұрын
@@retrosoul8770 What do you consider to be cheap or poor design in Strider exactly? The trial and error nature of the gameplay? That's half the fun of learning to master the game imo. I was also a fan of Revenge of Shinobi, too, for full disclosure, but I still personally prefer Strider for a number of reasons, not least the fact that you can really race through it, when you're good. Gets the ol' adrenaline pumping when played like that and it makes you appreciate the game's design all the more. Although designed originally as a coin-munching arcade game, I think it was really intended as an extravaganza for the senses.

I admittedly need to try and play through the game again but when I tried it for the first time via the Ps1 game Strider 2 2nd disc that came with this arcade version, I found it frustrating for the wrong reasons, and believe me I've conquered alot of very tough 16-bit side scrollers like (Revenge of Shinobi, Hagane, Contra 3 on hard, Alien Soldier, MMX, CastleV Bloodlines etc) but Strider felt unrefined to me and some attacks felt unavoidable but I'm very willing to accept that I probably missed things and may just simply need to git gud. I've perfectly fine with trial and error gameplay, as the aforementioned games embody the same design ethos. Tbh however, any of these games can be "raced through" with enough skill, as you said that's the thrill and the overall purpose of challenging arcade side-scrollers imo. I just personally didn't find the game very enjoyable, but that's just me, I find Revenge of, Shinobi 3, Hagane etc to be better all-around. Nothing against those who enjoy the game.

It's been over 20 years so I can't remember this but are the tunes resetting to stage one a MAME glitch or was that in the arcade too? One of the things I loved about this game were its beautifully atmospheric tunes, it's sad that tunes like Gravity Unusual, Theme For The Counter-attack and Grandmaster are missing from this. I'm glad Roaring made it in though, that was always my favourite tune from this game.

Apparently there's two revisions of the coin-op, one with the repeating Stage 1 BGM, the other with the full soundtrack. The former appears to be more common, as it was used for the game's emulation in the PS2/XBOX Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 compilation, and is seemingly the one used for many YT longplays. The latter was used for the PS1 port (bundled with Strider 2) however, and is the one which the Genesis port is based off of.

***** I distinctly remember my copy of Strider for PS1 having the full soundtrack. As far as cut-scenes go, if those cutscene BGM's weren't used in the second ROM revision (which fixes the looping music), then they were left in the sound test and not used in the coin-op at all.

Dan Rami I sold my PS1 ages ago but kept my copy of Strider 2. I recently discovered my PS3 plays PS1 (but not PS2) games. I just fired up Strider to check out its music so I played through it on easy. It's great to play the game with all the proper tunes intact but it's a little disappointing that the intros to stage 2, 3 and 4 don't have the same music as the Mega Drive version. Having the stage one music repeat over and over really ruins the atmosphere of this game.

trip2themoon Ok so it wasnt me! I knew something was up because it just kept looping the same music over and over again. And I totally agree it changes the dynamic of the game!

trip2themoon - Agreed. One of the best things about the Mega version of this game was the practically note-for-note conversion of the coin-op's epic tunes; just a shame they suffered in Europe for the notorious PAL optimisation issues and sounded about 10bpm's slower. But still absolutely awesome... and I remember loving the screeching synth stab that introduced Gravity Unusual. Classic!

Argh. This is the ROM from the board with the music bug, that's why the level 1 music repeats on levels 3 and 5. Some people claim that the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version simply added music to those levels... Not so! You'll see the music restarts in the same places the music changes on the Sega Genesis version. The original revision of Strider in the arcades had the bug where the music repeated... Later revisions fixed this bug (all the arcade versions of this game that I played were the later revision). There is a mame romset that gives you the fixed revision. I've argued in the past with people claiming I just had false memories about the arcade having different music for levels 3 and 5. However, my long term memory is pretty excellent and I was able to beat this game on a single credit well before it was released to the Sega Genesis. The home version didn't add extra music tracks... Sega Visions had a whole article about how they managed to fit a 32 mbit game into an 8 mbit cartridge... Sega wasn't trying to add a bunch of music tracks to a game they were trying to fit into 1/4th the original size. In every Capcom collection I've played, they've used this crappy version of the game which makes it unplayable to me. I played this game so much in the arcade and a lot (but not as much) at on the Genesis... It just drives me nuts! The Strider 1 disc that came with Strider 2 on PS1 didn't have this problem and is the best version of the game that's exactly like the arcade (except for some minor loading). I didn't really like Strider 2. :( Capcom, step yah game up! Give us a proper version of Strider in one of your game collection releases (or, even better, make it so both revisions are available)!

You should do another longplay of this wonderful game, but this time using the US set 2 striderua. In this set, every stage has its own music, just like the Genesis/Megadrive port. I assume for this video you used the US set 1, which repeats the first stage music at stages 3 and 5....

Strider 2 on the PS1 has the original Strider arcade game on a bonus disc and that version has all the proper music. I was disappointed recently when I discovered that the version of Strider on my Capcom Classics PS2 disc has the version with the messed up music. The constant repeating of the stage 1 music really kills the game's atmosphere.

Brings back some memories. Used to play this at a Circle K when they used to have arcade games in the convenience stores back in the 80's. I also figured out the glitch in the amazon level where you let the time run out with the rest of your lives in the trench and you would get 3 more. I remeber I got 280,000. Also R-Type was another bad ass one.

Great game, but I *do* prefer the MD version for completely subjective reasons obviously. The music seems to have more kick to it and while the graphics are less detailed, I swear the characters are bigger in the Mega Drive. MD version's main character has no black outline either (I think it's called self-inking, in traditional animation) and makes the visuals, IMO, clearer. I miss the speech between levels though =) Something about that "I got ya", as a kid that always got me riled up.... possibly because I always died shortly thereafter =D
@echelon2k8
@echelon2k8 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, everything in the game appears bigger in the MD version due to the smaller display resolution of the console, which shows a smaller portion of arcade game's action stretched out in the same full screen space.

Got this on Genesis, PS2 in Capcom Classics Collection 2, the NES version, which was different, and on PS1 bundled with Strider 2 (and the discs goofily got labeled wrong). PS1 version is my go to for the arcade experience as the emulated version on PS2 is from the wrong ROM set, the one that had fewer songs in it, the PS1 version got it right. If my Genesis is hooked up, and I feel like Strider, well I'll play it instead.

Btw, anyone looking for a Strider-like game should check out MOON DIVER on PS3/PSN. It's from the same creator and while not the same still has the typical Strider trademarks.
