It finally occurred to me that the setting for Contra is a cross between the Aliens and Predator movies; I think the 2 characters in this game are supposed to be Dutch and Billy from Predator 1987

I thought they were John Rambo and Dutch Schaefer for the ultimate cross over. Those two together can take out everything.

Music is slow as molasses. It's supposed to sound a lot faster. Recent rom updates seem to improve this.

So what's the difference from other versions besides the text and the name? Also, I love both NES and Arcade versions.

The Japanese version has a harder second loop where you locked to the hardest difficulty, you can no longer continue after you lose your last life and neither a second player can join-in in this loop. The International version has only the first loop.

That's the final boss? Why did they cut early? The other versions of the game have you go inside and fight some more.

This is the original version of Super Contra, the extra parts you're referring to hadn't been conceived yet and were added later in the NES port.
