Hated this game. So hard, it wasn’t even fun. Couldn’t beat the 1st level as a kid and didn’t feel so bad when I saw older kids who couldn’t do it either. Always believed that if you could beat it the first go around that you had way too much time on your hands.

In an arcade I used to go to as a kid at weekends I once heard a very loud kerfuffle and the sound of someone kicking and punching an arcade cabinet violently. Turned out it was the Ghosts n' Goblins machine. I guess he got to the end and realised he had to replay it. Can't say I blame him, when I completed Ghouls n' Ghosts and they pulled the same trick I just walked away in disgust with a few credits left. Still, great game.

Souls are easy compared to this game, image souls but with a timer.. you would have 5 minutes to get to and kill the boss of each level. That is what made this game so hard was the timer and sometimes the mobs would sit on top of a ladder so you burned too much time waiting for them to patrol away from it.

@CaptainAppleManFilms Sure, you can find the info for both machines around. The arcade hardware for this game did use a Z80, like the Genesis. However, the other sound chips were different. I think this sounds a fair bit different (it's probably a higher quality, too).

When I finally beat level 5 today after a million tries, the game informed me that I couldn't proceed since the shield was not equipped as my weapon; not only does that make no sense, but the game never hinted that I needed it in any way, shape or form. So instead of getting the key for going through the ogre gauntlet, surviving the ungodly amount of red demons, and beating the two guards at the end, I got sent back to level 4 instead. **** you, Capcom.

is to avoid Religious problems.. with the game, originally the japanese version, use the Holy Cross where Christ was CRUCIFIED ,, but once the game reach U.S.A it was changed to a shield.. .a shield of the 3rd Cruzade... also in super ghouls n ghost for SNES , the coffins have a cross on thems..on the Japanese version Makai Mura ..and an ANKH on the other versions..

Actualy, it was a cross, not a shield with a cross on it. In the version that was imported to Argentina (where I live) it was a cross. I was a child back then and I didn't speak english yet, so I don't remember if it was japanese or english (it was just a language I didn't understand :D)

Cleared this game many a time in the arcade. I used to practice on it using a little bug the devs left in the version in the UK. If you got changed to a frog just as your time ran out then you got infinite time. In the cavern level you could keep getting lives fall from the top level until you got bored and then moved on to try for the end of the game.

Amo esse jogo até hj. Digo ate hj, pq qdo era molecão perto da minha casa tinha um fliperama e na época tinha essa máquina. Resumindo, fiquei tão viciado q o rapaz q tomava conta do fliperama não deixava eu jogar pq demorava muito para sair e sendo assim atrapalhava as outras pessoas q queriam jogar. Um belo dia sai de casa pra ir jogar e para minha tristeza tinham levado essa máquina embora. Descobri q ela tinha ido parar numa outra cidade q fica a 50 Km da minha. Trampava numa pequena empresa, e assim q recebia o meu saláriozinho pegava o busão e ia até essa cidade vizinha para jogar. Uma vez fui ao Playcenter (parque de diversão q existia em SP) e chegando lá descobri q tinha essa máquina no salão de jogos, e aí fiquei tão louco para jogar q deixei as atrações do parque pra lá.
