Cost me a fortune, around £1400, and when I picked it up and brought it back, I stopped at a magazine shop and got a copy of PC Zone. On the cover CD was a demo of Diablo. I'd never heard of Diablo. This was also my first Windows 95 PC, my old 486 was running Dos 6.22. I spent the next week playing that Diablo demo over and over. Amazing game for its time.

I liked how the demo was basically infinitely replayable because of the random map algorithm, so you could just play through those first three levels over and over again. I hung on to DOS for a few years, certain titles (Tombraider, Quake, Carmageddon, Screamer 2, etc) were just faster in DOS without the Windows overhead. But you couldn't have done Diablo in DOS. And as more and more developers started to take advantage of DirectX, and as people started getting more RAM for their systems, Windows was the way to go.

The story for D1 really is unparalleled. It's almost like D1 is the main story and all the sequels are just epilogues to the main events that are D1. I think it has to do with the fact that the cast is so small and you get to know them so well. There are recurring characters in 2-4 for sure, including some who stick with you on your journey, but none of the games connected me with the supporting cast as much as D1 since you have to talk to them so much and they are always the ones helping you out, as opposed to splitting the supporting cast up between acts.

D1 definitely feels like a more self-contained game than it's sequels. The location plays a big part too. If the other games had stayed in one location, rather than exploring several wildernesses/lands, they might have had a similar feeling. But I agree, sometimes when I go back to D1, it seems like the sequels are just epilogues or spin-offs.

Diablo 1 has an amazing atmosphere and storyline. I still remember literally being scared to move in D1, fearing what would await me at the next dark corner. Diablo 2 lost the darkness, atmosphere and relevance of story, but was a thousand times more deep in terms of gameplay - amazing items, runewords, gems, drops, farming, skill trees, fun builds.... also, amaaazing PvP. Diablo 3... I literally can't think of a single good thing in D3. Maybe that fact that gold was auto-pick up? I'm not even joking, that's the best thing I can think of atm. Neither close at all to D1's atmosphere, nor to D2's amazing complexity of items and builds and gameplay. Blizzard really is just a dead company standing on the shoulders of the geniuses that created games like Diablo, WoW, WC and SC decades ago.

Ya same, I played that game for some years as a kid, watched my dad try it when it first came out and when hellfire update came and added the hive. Good video, but there were some differences noted, like the begining in town there is an extra character added and two chests in town that were never there, oh and yes there were quite a few quests left out that add bits to the story and the lore, like what happened to the kings son etc....and the ending hope this doesn't spoil it, where your character puts the soulstone in his own forehead and begins the diablo 2 story sort of. This game is a classic, one of the better looking old-school games, the textures and the artwork for the monsters was awesome, almost felt like they went down a step for number 2 and 3....it just feels more horror and monster movie in the first diablo, so much so ypu forget how slow your character "ran" or the fact that the village has a well that is tainted, but no one mentions that till you ask Cain. Loved Farnham, never really could understand that babling phrase, can't a guy sit and have a drink.

I remember playing the shareware version of Diablo back in college. Upgrading my parents computer and getting a cable to connect two PCs was one of my first computer build projects. Not only that but my PC was in the basement, in a small guest room, I would power on the game and go back upstairs for snacks only to come down as the Diablo laugh on the launcher was coming on. I played this on Play Station 1, no online connection and the save would fill the whole memory card. Also the game would take forever to save. And still I played again and again, with each class for many hours. In my opinion this Diablo has the best ambiance of all. It is grit, dark, Gothic, has a lot demonic symbols... It is the one that deserves being called "Diablo". Diablo II is already too diluted, they put a desert stage with an Egyptian theme, a rain forest stage with pygmies... I don't know what they were thinking. In Diablo III things only got worse. In the first one they really tried to imprint that demonic and horror vibe, although it's not a horror game, off course, the game itself is not anxiety inducing, it's quite calming in fact.
@Theendisbeyondchaos2 жыл бұрын
I played on PC when it first came out and still remember my experience; now 20+ years later. Diablo 2 in my opinion is technically a superior game to Diablo 1, however I agree with you that thematically, Diablo 1 provides the most immersive experience into the Diablo mythos that made the foundations of my favorite franchise. It's proof that something simple can provide more relevant story telling than graphics, better physics and new classes. The dungeon crawl is a simple and effective tool into story telling. If Diablo 1 was completely remade, with quality of life upgrades and more opportunities to experience the story.. it would stand alone amongst the other Diablo entries as the clear hellish victor!

the reason i always loved d1 so much in comparison to the other ones is that this one felt more focused on horror and being scary. i know that being an old game and the first one it meant the gameplay was going to be more limited next to the upcoming titles, but i felt that they focused way too much on making a more flashy and fantasy based hack and slash than a more raw scary experience

This is extremely well put together - I bought Diablo as my first proper PC game when I was 10 in 1996. My parents had no idea what it was, but I loved this game so much and have fond memories of the story and the characters' speeches. Like many have said, those who played it enough can recite many of the dialogues and just hearing them again is awesome. However, I noticed that your version of the game is very different from mine; for one, the Butcher never had a lair in the original; he was just in the room. Secondly, those chests didn't exist outside the tavern, so I guess this is a modded version of the game or someones brilliant effort to try and update it. I love the fact you can scroll out on your version! I'm certain this game would be stupid difficult today, but if you have any info on how I can get a copy, that would be great!
