I used to play Dragon’s Lair and Spaceace in the Arcades back in 1983. I loved them, and yes Dragon’s Lair was a little grainy on some of their Machines in real life, you can see one at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.

I have this cabinet. DL 1plays perfect. However, DL 2 and SA gameplay seems too fast. I played SA a lot on 3DO and do not remember the speed of the game being so fast.

I am a fan of arcade1up cabs and enjoy them a lot...but at discounted prices. I'm just saying it's funny how we accept flaws, some minor and some major, and still pay full price.

A great review! I agree with you on this cabinet. Really am happy with it. I noticed that the audio issue is actually through the whole game, but it is not as noticeable most of the time since there is not lip syncing until the daphne scene. The audio is actually playing at the right speed for the emulation timing of movement and action button input, but the video is playing roughly 10 frames behind the sound output. As you play, you will notice the sound happens before the flashes and action on the screen. In the intro, it is easiest to notice this happening when dirk gets slammed into the wall with coins, and the coin sound happens before he actually slams into them. This also creates noticeable issues with the scenes ending a bit earlier than the actual arcade version, so there are incomplete endings to some of the quicktime events. I really hope they fix this, because it does affect the timing of our control inputs, since we have to press the button a bit earlier than we would have if the video was synced correctly with the audio. (Of course, you can get used to that timing, but still a bit annoying. :) ) I am still really loving this game! I really look forward to them releasing a patch! At least, I really hope so! :)

Someone probably already mentioned this, but the Daphne audio sync issue on the last level is not an Arcade 1up problem. I have the game on several platforms and this is consistent on all versions.

I will say this. They have upped their packaging game if this cabinet is any indication. The boxes containing each category of parts each come in a fancy black sleeve with a friendly icon indicating what's in there, and the new packaging scheme does a good job of protecting the parts.

PDubs, Great review! I can now see why it would be easier to part with your Dragon's Lair iiRcade since you have a few of them. I REALLY Arcade1up's version of this cabinet back in the day, and even after buying the iiRcade Dragon's Lair I still wanted to pick up this version. However, Arcade1up's quality track record as of late ultimately made me pass. I'm so glad it has the great quality 17" monitor we all grew accustomed to, and that secondary monitor for scoring and information is amazing! And though the Daphne Emulator can get the job done to play through the entirety of these games, I've always found it finicky at best and the issues you mentioned in your video are not surprising. Overall, I think Arcade1up did a decent job with this version of Dragon's Lair, but for $599+ dollars, I'd expect no issues like I got with my Star Wars cabinet. And though I do agree with you that Arcade1up's Dragon's Lair is one of the best looking cabs they've brought out, I guess, for me, Star Wars, Tron, and Tempest I think look just a bit better. Gorgeous cabinets all around, though :) vgv

Thanks for the review... Love mine! Definitely brought me back to the days playing it as a kid in the arcade! I raised mine up 3 inches.. at 5 11 the marquee felt alittle "in your face" .. I had an extra set because I raised my Defender/Midway legacy cab to eliminate the blind spot on top of screen standing up.

Loved the long intro! Great music selection for that! Still waiting for my Dragon's Lair cabinet. It got diverted to another state, and then finally made it into the next city over from me, and won't be delivered to after the holiday. So frustrating. I must have this cabinet! I will wait a bit till it goes on sale. I remember playing this in the arcade when I was around 13 .Got to the dragon and drew a crowd of people around me. Talk about turning the heat up. Beat the dragon for the first time and could hear a couple reactions. I can’t explain the feeling, but that moment will always stick out to me. That was a great gaming moment for me. Dragons lair and Soace ace might not be for everyone, but growing up with these games as a kid seemed like a big leap in gaming. Nobody ever seen anything like it before. My good friends older brother at the time actually did the voice for Dirk the Daring. Gave me a dragons lair poster and a flip book. Those were some great times! Great review by the way. Sold me on it. I’m a big fan, grabbed the new wave toys small scale replica of it. Arcade accurate and very impressive.

Great Review PDUBS! Here is a video idea (perhaps a stream discussion). You mentioned that Star Wars is your Favorite Cab and how Dragons Lair is a great 2nd, why not Create a PDubs criteria for home arcades (Cabinet Artwork, Playability, Monitor/Controls, Nostalgia, Fun factor, etc.) then rank ALL of the Arcade 1 up line up to date. It doesn't have to be a long-drawn-out "Top 10 Cabs" video but more of a litmus test or benchmarking system for us to see how cabs like Class of 81 ranks against newer cabs. THEN not only can you share this updated criteria each time a cab is released but you can also use the same set of criteria to grade other products from iiRcade, AtGames, and create a "Scorecard" for the best at home arcades. ***Bonus idea, once you've defined your PDUBS criteria and scores, crowdsource and get a community vote. That way you have a Pdubs & Crowd Ranking (Similar to Rotten Tomatoes Critics and Fans rating).

The audio sync is present throughout the whole Dragon's Lair image. I noticed it right away when I was first playing but you can definitely see it during the boat rapids scene. The portals flash before the sound is heard, where in the actual game, the audio is fully synchronized with the video. I hope they can get this fixed for us. I haven't noticed any sound issues with Space Ace or DL 2.

What you're not telling people is this thing is HELL to put together. I got mine together but it's not right. There's a small gap between the marque and the side panel because the holes for the wood dowels are drilled a fraction of an inch too far apart so one of the dowels is keeping the marque from touching the side panel in one corner. This is also a problem when assembling because there is no way to keep the marque standing on edge before applying the other side panel. I had the same problem with panel "N". So I had to skip several steps ahead, flip the cabinet on its side and put those two screws in just to hold the marque and panel "N" in position (otherwise they kept tipping over because the holes are drilled a fraction of an inch too far apart for the dowels to go in). I don't know what is wrong with my screen, but the bottom right-hand corner is not flush with the control desk so there's a gap there too and I can't get to that corner without taking the side panel off and going through that hell again of trying to get all that stuff to line up. I have two other Arcade 1Up cabinets and never had this kind of trouble. I'll probably leave the screen as is and hope it stays put because it's not worth the strain on my knees to take the back panel off and try to get back there and mess with it, plus I worry about making it worse. Yeah, the cabinet is beautiful, but Arcade 1Up should have pulled a few people off the streets, gave them a screwdriver, and had them build the cabinet just to see if they could do it, and how many "four letter words" they dropped before the end or just giving up. They really needed to rethink the build of this cabinet for $600.00.

I don't have those gaps but I've built dozens of these cabinets. For the marquee I had my hammer 🔨 propped at an angle like that to hold it up while I screwed down and lined up the other panel. I usually prop up what can possibly fall down (like the kickplate) to help line up that second panel

Grrrreat video Pdubs!! I really like how this cab turned out. The simulated digital display really does add a lot. The one thing I was real curious about was if A1up would include anything as a nod to the laser disk hardware of the OG system. Even a keychain or some DL swag would be nice. But overall, I totally agree with your review!!

Cool, thanks for the awesome review. This is my favorite arcade game of all time! Tron and Star Wars are #2 and 3 for me. I like the idea of these cabs, I just wish they offered a "premium" version for a little more, closer to full size, etc. Also, the actual marquee artwork IS a little grainy, as it looks like it was printed on canvas, a really cool effect, on the original arcade cabinet.

Hey Dubs I would agree to a point. The machine is nice don't get me wrong. But for me "Interactive movie games" are just not for me. I really don't consider them "Video Games". Once you beat them they basically are just action figures that sit on the shelf and when you max out the score you can't really improve on the game. For me the best "Interactive movie" was "Night Trap". The game was very hard to 100% complete on the SEGA CD and yes that game is the reason we have a "Rating System" for video games. If only Dragon's Lair had more to offer for me, other games like this "Time Gal", "Cobra Command", etc. Also another game which tried to do the Dragons Lair like deal was a game on the Playstation 3 called "LAIR" the game in my opinion is very much like an updated Dragons Lair but you riding on the back of a dragon and having to complete certain quest. But the game is very Cinematic and like Dragons Lair and Star Wars had a kid, you have to perform certain attacks by pressing buttons and like a Star Wars game you fly around.. Try it out sometime. Should be easy to find and doesn't cost an Arm and a Leg. *Chuckles* Also if I was a fan the fact that it has Emulation Problems. I would totally pass on this. The system should have been 100% Tested to make sure No Emulation issues are present.

Many A1Up cabinets have this problem with extra remaining credits prevents games like Galaga from returning to attract mode, so don't hold your breath waiting for A1Up to fix ANYTHING. They usually can't be bothered.

Topper has to be the mirror screen from the original. I still have memories of Aladdin's Castle and standing behind like a crowd of 20 people at 8-9 years old but still being able to watch the action because the mirror screen topper.

Looks like an amazing cab. Dream come true for me. Got it be pre ordered but we don't get it here in the UK until 26th August. One thing I will say though. Shame it don't have an option to make it look like it's running on a CRT monitor. Like curved corners. Would be a nice touch.

I doubt it. These things are impulse buys. They are too short, even with ugly riser and still made with cheap quality parts. And Dragon's Lair the game itself is boring and the worst game Aracde 1up has done yet.

So many people poo poo'd the AC-1up DL cab when it was announced but I for one never doubted it would be in demand. These are the types of marquee games where AC-1up outshines the competition. Truly form over function.

If I could I would definitely buy Dragons Lair out of Respect for what it is. I also have no nostalgia for it, other than when it was being re-relessed on Xbox 360.... That was my first introduction to it LOL!! And my impression was WOW! WTF?! That was like a Disney Movie but PLAYABLE?! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 FLASH Forward to 2019 or 2020 and through the community here I got more information on what this game really was for people when I saw the various Live Streams like 1up Weekly and stuff. I'm really excited for those who have always wanted this from A1up! I know how it feels! I had wanted MVC when they first came out with their Poll on which cabs thy should make next... 1 Year and 7 months after release, It's still the cab I play EVERY WEEKEND FOR SURR! But almost every other day during the work week.... But of course I have Online Play and it's where the fun is at for MVC 😅

Control panel need to extend out another inch or two. That edge is rough on the palms! I think the marquee emulated the original arcade version with the rough graphics? I can’t remember. Other than that, I love this one. Brings back a lot of great memories.

I own an original Dragon's lair cabinet(non working) and I can confirm that the marquis on the original cabinets is also grainy. So Arcade 1up got this arcade accurate.

I played the original, never played dl2, but when space ace appeared, I played the crap out of it....all my money...lol Your reviews are awesome...this I think is one if the best as far as looks. I think your tempest is your best looking cab...just my opinion. Great one dude.

Beautiful Cab!! A1up did a great job with this one, I'll be selling my iircade and picking this one up. The One thing I do not understand is, this game you play dead on and has the BOE but MK needs angles for two players and has the trash screen 🤷🏽‍♂️

I don't really care for the game, but the cabinet looks beautiful-- my biggest memory of Dragon's Lair is how they would have a secondary CRT placed above the cabinet in the arcades so spectators could see what was going on in the game. Made me think it would've been a good idea for A1Up to include an HDMI out on the back of the cab for that same purpose, but I guess they didn't... missed opportunity!

only the console versions had the intro fight. Is the arcade version has randomized levels, so your starting point will almost always be different.

Has anyone been able to get through DL2 yet? I can beat DL1 on one life without issue. But some inputs in DL2 seem to require absurdly precise timing and/or fail constantly even when I'm sure I made the right move at the right time. Level 3 has a few- grabbing the Ace of Spades above the Jabberwock, then using the Sword as the next move seem particularly unforgiving. Level 4 has a bunch. The three sword inputs after grabbing the first golden apple, and then the moves of jumping down, then L/R after grabbing the real apple, and essentially every single input after lightning hits the chain feels like you have to be so exact with the input timing or you fail. Even a fraction of a second too soon or too late and you fail. Level 5 feels normal. Level 6 is a nightmare and I haven't been able to finish it yet because of several absurdly strict input timing windows towards the end. Once you're dangling from the bat, it's sword/sword/up followed by a L/R that I seem to fail 75% of the time regardless of my timing. Then it's sword (which is forgiving), then down, L/R, R/L and these three inputs feel like you have to be frame perfect to succeed. I've played to this point dozens of times and only gotten past these three a few times, only to fail in one of the next inputs which also feel unfair as far as timing goes. I've made it onto the time machine ONCE, which simply requires a few sword inputs, but somehow failed. Several hours later I'm still unable to complete this level. Is it like this for everyone?

iircade is using modified console ports of these games so plenty of additional features with those. Either way is a good experience for me. Enthusiasts will prefer the original Arcade Games. There's really no wrong answer

Mine arrived yesterday and I couldn’t wait to get it assembled. I jumped right into DL2, which is my favorite game of the three, and was horrified to find out that there’s this annoying white text introducing every level and showing each input needed to progress. You can see it in your gameplay demo. This text is not in the original game. And there doesn’t appear to be any way to turn it off? Has anybody figured out a way to turn this annoying white text off? It makes the game borderline unplayable.

The animation fmv looks pretty good. Is this the original or were the visuals retouched? I know the company digital leisure that owns the rights has redone the games multiple times. I am not an expert on dragon’s lair, but I remember playing it extensively when the daphine emulator first came out. It looks great.

It runs the originals off Daphne emulator. I don't think they customized it too much

I beat it many times back in the 80's in aracde settings and have played almost every version ever created. I can say because of the look and feel of this cabinet gameplay really took me back. It just feels different than all the rest (in a good way) Only a handful of home versions are arcade authentic when it come to screens and gameplay. 1)the xbox arcarde version- not the new trilogy. 2)The wii version believe it or not. 3) The mini replicade from new wave toys and anything running the daphne emulator. The iircade version is fine for casual fans but not for nostalgic diehards like myself 1) It's the andriod version that gets scores higher than 427,469- not arcade authentic. 2) You get to the final lair without having to complete all scenes- also not authentic.
