Played this game back in 1983. 2 quarters per game and I spent almost $10 in a few weeks. We used to play it on our work break outside the grocery store in a small gaming room. How I learned to win was I watched others play and saw how they advanced, and saw how a few won. When it was my turn to finally win I had other kids around watching my moves. Great memories.

Everything you said in the intro is me :) I turn 54 this year and the last time I was able to finish the game was maybe 1985 or 1986 and never looked at my score, my goal was just to beat the dragon. I could finish it at any difficulty level.. This video in spired me to try finishing it again. PS: My favourite version on the Nintendo Switch the restored video quality is amazing.

Hi Tom. That brings back memories! That's the same trick my brother used back in the 1980s to always get the high score! He would let the knight die intentionally near the end to score extra points. My brother played Dragon's Lair while I stood beside him playing Space Ace! Thanks for sharing!

This was an awesome experience to watch you play and defeat it. You are a Jedi master my man. At 51 I remember this game very well. Put way too many quarters in it. Grew up in Arcades with my friends playing both electromechanical and golden age arcade games. Thankful to have nine arcade1up cabinets. A trash find gutted Space Invaders I put a 60-1 board in and nine EM games. Important to bring arcade nostalgia and history to my five adult children, spouses, significant others, and four grandchildren.

I won back when I was a kid in high school. I'd never made it to the last scene so I had no idea what to do. All of a sudden some guy standing next to me told me what to do. I won the game and turned around and there were a ton of people who were watching me play that I didn't know were there. I looked to my side to see who had been helping me, but there was no one there. It was a very interesting experience.

This game really drew a crowd upon its arcade release in the UK. One was installed in the lower ground floor of ‘Oasis’ in Birmingham city centre. I may be wrong, but I recall that the game could be cheated and skipped forward in some way by giving the cabinet a well-timed shove. Thanks for uploading this, it reminds me of happy times and a mis-spent youth. 😊

It drew a crowd here in the US too. I never heard of shoving the game to skip forward. It was being played from a laser disc so maybe so. That machine weighed three times what I did back then so I sure wasn't moving it.

This and Space Ace, I used to lose big time 🤓 They were similar style games and both made by the same company. Space Ace came out 4 months after Dragon’s Lair. You should do Space Ace next 👍

@meskinYT

Back in my arcade days I played that game so much I started trying to beat it blindfolded. Almost every room started with a sound cue so it was just a matter of recognizing the room by sound and then memorizing the timing of the move list. Some rooms required an almost simultaneous action with the first sound cue, which made it very difficult, but still possible. Of course, many of the mirrored rooms you simply had to guess whether your first move was left or right. And *that* was what made it impossible without some luck. I want to say that about 3/4 of the game could be beaten blindfolded, but my memory is foggy. Fun to watch the game play again after all these years. Thanks!

Long story short... I had the opportunity to choose my own home arcade game in 1987 (I was 16ys old). It came down to Dragon's Lair or the original Star Wars. I was a massive Star Wars fan and had literally had every Star Wars figurine and playset. My parents were told the Dragon's Lair was going to be very expensive to repair if anything ever went wrong. I'm 52 years old now and the Star Wars arcade game still sits in my living room. Blue dot in the middle of the screen but the audio still works. In hindsight, no regrets. I have all 10 of the top scorers on this machine and I have no doubts that had I got Dragon Lair it would not have lasted as long as the Star Wars did.

I use to do this method back in '83 at the local 7-11 in Phoenix. I believe that machine gave you 5 lives so the end score was in the 425,000 - 450,000 range... It's been so long I can't remember the exact number. After beating the game every time, the video game vending company came and changed out the chips on the motherboard, making the timing different in the game, so we had to spend money to learn it all over again!

373,879 is a very solid score! When I was 15 in 1985, I participated in a Dragon's Lair score tournament in our local arcade and won with a score over 385,000 (can't remember it exactly, it was 38 years ago!). My prize was 25 dollars worth of gaming tokens! BTW, looks like you were playing on easy difficulty. There are a few more moves in hard mode (such as requiring to quickly move forward on the Black Knight scene among others). My competition then was playing on hard mode and the extra moves is why my score was higher. I always set my Arcade1Up Dragon's Lair on Hard difficulty since that's what I was used to in the arcade.

The success of Dragon's Lair spawned the next laser disc game from the same company called Space Ace. Dragon's Lair II was in the works, but the video game crash shelved those plans until it was finally released in 1991. This Arcade 1Up version I have here has all three games on it. There were also other laser disc games released by different companies during the mid-late 80's.

Dragons lair was the most expensive game/ play time back then. It felt like I payed a quarter for 3 min.... that's the only reason I never played it much. How much $$ do you think you spent on playing it? THANKS!

I finally got that achievement on the Steam version (no visual cues). I never could stomach the earlier version for home: Escape from Singe's Castle. The old CRT's have a charm of their own.

Great video. The audio sync is a problem with some other 1up games. I think is because of the cheaper LCD monitors they put inside the 1up games that causes a few ms delay. I can't speak to what 1Up cabs are effected, I just know a couple of the cabs I own have that problem and have been told there is no fix for it.

The audio and video is "slightly" out of sync on this cabinet. "Slightly" is subjective though. Some, like me, find it a non-issue. Others won't buy the cabinet because its bad enough for them. Supposedly, Arcade 1Up is actively working on a patch.

@@tomball3611 The audio sync issue is not a big deal for me either. Yes, hardcore arcade collectors tend to find it a deal breaker.

There is a Dragons Lair in the arcades with a very high difficulty level. Extra moves and you have to be precise with the joystick. I haven’t seen that version of it since the 90s, but I’ve completed it.

This cabinet has two difficulty settings. This video shows it on the easy setting. The hard setting is like what you describe. I think the original arcade game had two difficulty setting too.

I played DL so much, that i could slay the dragon while facing away from the cabinet (hands behind my back), I would have others come up and ask me to move so that they could play, the look on their face when i told them that thay would have to wait until i was done, was priceless.

I don't know if there were updates or not, but I don't even recall there being a score on DL when I played it in arcades. Admittedly, though, I played very few sessions with it, as it cost an outrageous 3 or 4 quarters per play, depending upon the arcade. Years later, I bought a PC version on CD, along with Space Ace. It was exciting at first, but I quickly lost interest. UPDATE: Your video inspired me to re-install DL on my PC and give it a try. I've never completed it, but I'd like to try now. Thanks for the video and inspiration.

There were different versions of the cabinet. The one made by Arcade 1Up is the first US release, and it had the external scoreboard on the panel, so the Arcade 1Up version is accurate, except for the size, which is 3/4 of the original scale. The second release was made by Atari, and had the same cabinet, but without the external scoreboard panel. In that release, the scoreboard was replaced by the Atari logo, and the score was displayed on-screen. There was a 3rd release, mostly for the european market, made by Sidam and also released by Atari, but the cabinet had a completely different design, and the score was on screen as well..

You're most welcome. Hope you get reacquainted with the game and get to slay the dragon. This Arcade 1Up version also includes Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II so I'm going to tackle Space Ace in the near future.

Howdy, This is my all time most Favorite Arcade Game, I'm also 53, will be 54 thus April 30th, I've played this game countless times, and now can beat it, with only one man, I don't remember my scores, but I gotta have at least come close to a perfect score, if not, gotten a perfect score, I'll have to play it again, and see what my score is, I've never played it before, to set a score, I just love playing the game, Glad I came across your channel, I'll be sure to subscribe, Stay safe, God Bless and game on my Friend 🕹 Peace

@@arthurok327you have to die twice to get the highest possible score when playing with three Dirks. If you play with five Dirks the maximum score possible is higher and you have to die four times.

Tom, I’m like you. I played this back in the early 80’s and only measured my victories by how many times I slayed the dragon. I just bought this Arcade1up machine a month ago and I love it. I’ve beaten it 3 times on easy mode with 3 lives so far. The only thing I can’t seem to remember is when Dirk jumps onto the falling wooden elevator, when are there 3 ledges and when are there 9. I know if I wait to jump off the 9th ledge I get more points but I can’t remember which time I can do that. Can you help me?

@eucharistman1 I'm not sure how I knew that, I just know, never try to go to the 9th jump off point, on the first falling floor, you will die every time, I have Dragon's Lair, so I'll play it again, and see when exactly you can get off at the 9th jump off point.. game on my Friend 🕹

I used to beat the game all the time, back in the day. Play it one handed, backwards, with a massive crowd around the machine. If you beat it without dying, on two players, you get unlimited credits. That's how I taught my friend how to play it. 😊
