i cry every time i hear it. sometimes i think i won't, but then i get to "if i could have it back, you know i'd love to waste it again" and the tears come. i remember when i first found this on youtube, not long after it came out, with the music video, one night in my angsty teenage room, and i knew right away that i'd remember this song. That'i'd carry it with me and keep it close to my heart. I listened to it on repeat for a few days, my little heart was in rags by the end of it. I grew up in the suburbs in denmark, so the scenery of the american suburbs seemed somewhat foreign, but i felt like i still understood. now, that i've seen the american suburbs myself, and i've moved abroad to a small city that isn't connected to the rest of the world by roads, the suburbs all look more the same to me. i look back on them, and on most days i feel blessed that so much of the mass-depression of the rest of the modern world doesn't seem to apply here. but i have tender days. and i dont think there's any point in being strong and keeping a straight face when my heart feels heavy. so when it does i'll give in, and i'll listen to the music that hurts, and i'll cry my little heart out for a little while. this one evokes painful nostalgia. it feels great to be able to count on something to feel so perfectly eloquent every single time.

In the suburbs, I I learned to drive And you told me we'd never survive Grab your mother's keys, we're leaving You always seemed so sure That one day we'd be fighting in a suburban war Your part of town against mine I saw you standing on the opposite shore But by the time the first bombs fell We were already bored We were already, already bored The kids want to be so hard But in my dreams, we're still screaming And running through the yard And all of the walls that they built in the 70s finally fall And all of the houses they built in the 70s finally fall Meant nothing at all Meant nothing at all, it meant nothing Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling and into the night So can you understand That I want a daughter while I'm still young? I want to hold her hand And show her some beauty before this damage is done But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask Then send me a perfect son Under the overpass In the parking lot, we're still waiting, it's already passed So move your feet from hot pavement and into the grass 'Cause it's already passed It's already, already passed Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling again I'm moving past the feeling I'm moving past the feeling In my dreams, we're still screaming We're still screaming We're still screaming If I could have it back All the time that we wasted I'd only waste it again If I could have it back You know I would love to waste it again Waste it again and again and again And all my friends, they were singing Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling again Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling again Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling again Sometimes I can't

this song is timeless. Everything came together for the band here. Generations from now, I hope people learn about the era I lived with music like this.

That theremin, while pretty subtle, gives this performance such an existential, ghostly feeling

It probably depends on your age (I don't dare to guess). Ive been following Arcade Fire since 2005 (Funeral), saw them in concert once. It was an amazing show. Whenever I feel like my life is in the shit, I just throw on some Arcade Fire to center myself again.
