Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Except for 1981, I was at those Long Beach performances both as a young spectator watching my sister and brother in 77-80 and as a participant in 82-83. 40 years later and these performances still give me and all who marched chills. It was like yesterday. You practice and play the march so many times it leaves an indelible memory in your brain. In my 3 years as member, the 82 Shrewsbury Fair performance was the best. As a spectator, the 1980 Rifle Regiment performance was the most spine tingling and impressive. The 1981 band that went to Australia was probably the most talented band of all. I believe even as non-competing honor band in 1981 they tied the winning score. Thank you to the AHS band directors and the Music Club for putting on this unique event. It was good to see Tom Landes talking us through those performances. Tom Forbes played a big part in those performances as well. With the Spaghetti dinner coming up, perhaps a similar KZbin production could be made as there are decades of audio recordings Tom Forbes made with some really good performances in them. Thank you again for this virtual AFOB production and continued success to the AHS music program that has positively impacted the lives of so many young adults for over half a century!

Thank you Doug for your impressive insight and for reflecting on your experience as a member of the Apache Marching Band! I'm not sure what the Music Committee has in store for the spaghetti dinner event, but it would be great to see a production of it as well.

I graduated from Arcadia High in 1965 and I was in the band for three years. I am very impressed with Tom, as the marching in the 80's is the best I have ever seen, and the music is great. Sounds more like a college than a High school. Students have to have a lot of pride in their band to perform so magnificently. Tom, you took the band to an , when higher level. Bravo Tom and the Apache Marching band.

I recall the drum major of the 1977 Arcadia band being Bob Lazzarini. I had the privilege of marching with him in the UCLA Solid Gold Sound, first as a trumpet and then as a drum major. He was the second drum major of the UCLA Marching band to hail from Arcadia that I marched with, the first being Kim Burdick. Both of them demonstrated the excellence of the Arcadia band program and especially the long tradition of great baton drum majors that continues to this day. Also, I remember Ron Hoar as the director of the Pasadena City College band. I started marching just after he left Arcadia for PCC.

MT. MIGUEL H.S. here. Competed against Arcadia. Won the drum competition on the Arcadia field too!
