I was present at this event. I'll never forget it. Shawn Michaels came out with Chyna and HHH and got on the mic and said "If we keep throwing shit, we'll just shut this shit down." Actually the fans that night, myself included were upset because the show was advertised as a Raw is War taping and we were then told it would not be airing. Plus the normal Raw ring setup wasnt there, no Titantron, etc.. we got the old bait and switch
@thisisnotachannel2 жыл бұрын
They did that to us fans a lot back then. I was lucky enough to attend an actual RAW taping in Albany NY (I live Upstate) at the then "Pepsi Arena", formerly the "Knickerbocker Arena"... and now "Times Union Center". But the other show I saw there was absolutely a bait and switch situation. Luckily the card was still really good... so there was no riot... but they definitely sold tickets like it was a RAW taping... but like you said, no titantron, I don't even think there was any pyro, and they definitely didn't use the RAW ring. It was the old red, white, and blue ropes (which surprised me, for some reason). Main event was a triple threat between Mankind, Kane, and Undertaker. Probably the best house show I ever saw.

Let's not forget - Shawn didn't do jobs regularly. And whether he did or didn't, he wasn't going to make the other guy look any good unless he had to. Bret Hart, whether he was booked to win or lose, was against squash matches and always tried to get other guy over as much as himself because he knew that the more guys he could help get over, the more guys he'd have to draw money with. HBK was too doped out of his mind to care at that point. The "Elite" function in an even worse way, and their boss was stupid enough to actually give them official authority roles in that company, and to my knowledge, those guys don't have any serious alcohol or drug problems. They're just short-sighted. Your goal as a wrestler isn't to bury your opponent. Squash matches shouldn't be your thing. Your goal is to make sure that while you look good, so does the other guy, because then you can make money with them.

Idk why after the Curtain Call Vince didn't punish Shawn too. Obviously Kevin and Scott left, so he couldn't do anything to them. It's arguable that the locker room politics coupled with the competitive nature of the people of the generations of the 80s and 90s is the reason why wrestling was so much better back in the day. McMahon and many other legends have claimed that today's generation are not cut from the same cloth hinting that the locker room is more of a team and yes men and women not willing to push their creative direction. I think Vince's comment about nobody wanting to take the brass ring was a reference to how people are scared to risk their jobs and fight others backstage for the top spot today, instead opting to go with whatever their given. People like hulk, warrior, the Kliq and every other big star fought their way to the top backstage and rarely cooperated. Today, everyone does what their told and honestly I'm sure the backstage area was similar but the legends never followed a script. Had the legends botched their off script promos they would have probably been treated the same as today's guys and girls. My point is that the backstage heat and politics probably created a more competitive environment which led to better wrestling. These guys today also lack the training those guys had years ago and probably have every right to fear going off script, but if highly successful, I'm sure they may have a chance at being a top guy. If they fail miserably, they are probably fired on the spot which is why everyone is on pins and needles, but the legends were probably treated the same. If punks pipebomb was legitimately an offscript shoot, than that is another example of going off script successfully and not being fired. Not saying I'm right, but it's funny how all the pro wrestlers we loved as kids were a bunch of backstabbing locker room politicians and today's wrestlers all seem to get along well and probably wouldn't dare politic in the back. It's just something to think about.
@sydneystroud43975 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in that same vein, if wrestlers do take initiative, they get buried, suspended, or fired. Look how many wrestlers have turned themselves into awesome performers in TNA, AEW, Mexico, or Japan. Why are they greater than they were in WWE. They are held back or limited, now they are in places where they can wrestle their styles, develop their preferred personas, and cut their promos.

@@chrisgrudge6964 That's the one where he fights Thunderlips (Hogan) at the start. Who went crazy when the bell rang. If I remember correctly he even launches Rocky from inside the ring out into the crowd. Then after what was easily the most entertaining match between a wrestler and a boxer. They get in the back and it's all smiles and taking pictures. Rocky may have even asked why he went crazy. Was told it was part of the show. Been a minute since I watched. So can't remember the specifics of the conversation. But you don't even need the sound on to see the inconsistency of his behavior in public and the back. That being said. There's a great line from Micky trying to talk Rocky out of the fight. "Have you seen one of these guys b4, wrestlers are as big as dinosaurs. Have you ever fought a dinosaur?" lol

@@deadaccount7520 Yeah but it's not really implying wrestling is fake. It was an exhibition match for charity so they weren't supposed to hurt each other, but Thunderlips decided to fight Rocky for real. Thunderlips going back to being a cool guy is just showing it was no hard feelings - that exist in real boxing, MMA etc, guys talk trash or get very violent but afterwards are chummy. The same plot could have happened between Rocky and another boxer, or Rocky and a karate fighter etc and it would have had the same effect.

@@chrisgrudge6964 That's the thing though. It could have been against any of those. But it wasn't. It was against the guy from the profession that at that point was concerned about maintaining the illusion of being legit.

dead account incoherent rambling and babbling. It didn’t expose the business. Rocky assumed, as most non-fans did, that it was all a work, and thunderlips smartened him up. The movie treated it as a legitimate competition. So go on again with your ramblings...

it was a cup with ice that hit shawn not paper by the way, plus a cooler with cans in it tossed at him, plus tobacco being spit on them and crap flying everywhere before hand. It was advertised as a taping and ended up being a hose show is what started it. Funny how people put their on twist on it for publicity. Cant make a bad situation worse when your already saying it was bad in beginning. duh

Sorry, but its bullshit to say that Nash only drew in WCW because people thought he was still in the WWF. That part of the angle only lasted a couple of weeks. The PPV before bash at the beach 96 (i cant remember the name) Hall and Nash said they didnt work for the WWF explicitly in a promo, the one where he powerbombed bischoff through the stage. Vince said over and over that Razor and Diesel worked for WCW and were under contract with turner, over and over on Raw. No one thought that was what was going on. By the time they were feuding with Piper, the angle was about how mistreated young stars are in WCW, and how they had to go to New York to get pushed. Its just funny, because even Cornette pushes the WWF narrative that Vince McMahon was the only reason Nitro beat Raw for over a year in the ratings and its BS. Vince made Macho Man quit wrestling. Hogan was in WCW over a year and wasnt drawing before the NWO angle. Everyone knew the NWO was a WCW stable in 96. The idea is kind of ruined with Vince burying them every week on Raw. I hate Bischoff, but he honestly talks about that era in WCW more honestly than Sullivan, Nash, Hall, WWE network, and as i see here, Cornette. And dont take my word for this, go watch those shows on the network. Summer of 96 in WCW and WWF. Nitro was a fun, new, exciting show with lucha and japanese wrestling in the first hour. Raw was boring as shit and nothing but squash matches. It got better ratings because it was a better show. Nash and Hall showing up legitimized the brand as a real alternative. Kind of like what Dean Ambrose did on the AEW show.

Nash got over in WCW by being himself, not by how he was potrayed for his WWE title run which was a lame babyface with his balls cut off.

Yeah, the Wrestlemania public workout where he and Stone Cold were to have a face to face. He got hit in the face with a Battery, got pissed and stormed out. HHH had to improvise and mock the crowd about how HBK destroyed all their heroes such as Bret, Taker, etc and how Stone Cold is next.
