So true Cornette is the man, one of my fav wrestling personalities of all time. I never really cared for any of the scaffold matches. The build to this match was awesome though.

The first hell in a cell came to be in the late 90s (HBK vs Taker in '97) so up until then there weren't any other instances of taking a bump from that high up BESIDES cage matches, but even then there's just so many ways you can produce a bump like that: 1) Shaking/tackling the cage while your opponent is sitting on top leg spread/as they're holding onto the ledge; or 2) Back and forth fist fighting while sitting on top till one of them drops dead. Whereas with scaffold matches there were multiple other ways to take a bump, be it like the midnights and corny on this match or taking a body back drop, etc

I was fortunate to see the Skywalkers match live in Philly Jan 1987. I ordered the Starcade 86 shirt and wore it that night.. Part of me wished I still had it but I sold it for $325. That Thanksgiving was HORRIBLE because it was the first time since 1979 my beloved Cowboys lost on Turkey day. The Road Warriors SAVED that day.
@tobiasfarragut2924 жыл бұрын
Yeah bruh the only thing better than $325 is having something you know is worth that having it in good condition and keeping it, I have a white zombie t-shirt that goes for $200 now on “Grailed” lol its soo faded too 🤣

you take my 50℅ chance at winning add his 30% chance of winning. Then multiple that by a 16 ft scaffold. subtract a 5 time 5 time 5 time 5 time 5 time world heavyweight title. You end up with dozens AND DOZENS of Mick Foley fans.

As to why Bill Dundee loves Scaffold Matches, when Superstar was young he, like Cary Grant, actually ran away from home and joined the circus. Billy was a trapeze artist before becoming a star. That would explain the ramrod posture for each. There is a picture of Billy next to a circus elephant from 1962 out there somewhere. Bill would have been maybe 19.

The Starcade 87 match shouldve been rnr/mx in a cage. Only because- the previous 2 starcades- the rnr were in cage matches. Plus- throughout their rivalry- the 2 teams havnt really done the cage just 2 on 2. Going back over the years lookin at houseshow match results- there werent many, if any cage matches. I THINK i read about 1. Chi town heat couldve been a triple cage event.

Really didn't like these matches. I know they drew some money at times (especially in Memphis where I believe the scaffolds were a bit lower just as Jim points out those of Mid-South were, and I think the first time JCP ran them at this Starrcade they helped that show turn a nice profit) but it was a gimmick that led to bad matches because the guys couldn't move or really do anything and then the fall was so severe that lots of guys ended up getting hurt badly.
@MaxxCoyote7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've never got the appeal either. Its basically impossible to have a good match, and I've never seen one that didn't suck. I guess you would have had to have been there. Give me a cage match any day of the week.
@Ramekink Жыл бұрын
I mean back in the day wrestling cards were developed in a way that there would be a little bit of everything throughout the show: Some upper midcard grudge matches, some high spot matches, some scientific wrestling matches, some brawl only matches, some milking the crowd only matches, a gimmick finish, etc. The whole show was booked to highlight the current and future main eventers. And the rest were moved around in a way that it didnt damage those main shows.
