A fun fact I found out before releasing this - Moltres learning Leer via Level-Up may have been an error. It learns it at similar levels to when Articuno and Zapdos learn Blizzard and Thunder, and Leer is exactly 10 places away from Flamethrower in the move index. Maybe a developer just typo'd? It'd logically learn it for the same reason Zapdos gets Thunder - Fire Blast is a Gym TM, so nothing gets it by Level-Up. Thanks to Zilch for telling me about this! Also, minor correction - Arcanine has occasionally seen use over Incineroar even when it got Intimidate and existed in the same format. Arcanine has faster Will-O-Wisps and Snarls, plus Safeguard, which can sometimes edge it onto teams where Fake Out + Knock Off isn't necessary. It's specific, but was enough for it to even have higher usage than Incineroar for exactly one month.

@PlaguevonKarma Жыл бұрын
The move problem is baked into RBY Fire-type design. They all realistically needed Thunderbolt to trade with Starmie. Flareon's movepool is arguably the best of the RBY Fire-types that aren't named Charizard and Magmar. Body Slam, Hyper Beam, Fire Blast, Fire Spin, etc, is all amazingly good for it. Its movepool aged like milk into GSC, where its Special was ruined, making Fire STAB way less useful. For purpose in RBY, Flareon is great - that's why it works in OU where the others don't. The real problem is it's slow and frail, which in RBY specifically is easily made up for because of how Chansey and Snorlax dictate pacing.

Fire types also got pretty fucked over in Gen 1 for even just normal play, when they all got stuck with Ember for STAB until they learned Flamethrower in their late 30s at the earliest, or getting the Fire Blast TM from Blaine when the game is almost over. Growlithe in particular didn't learn Flamethrower until fucking level 50, so if you wanted to use Growlithe/Arcanine, hope you like using a 40 power move for your only STAB up to the 7th gym! And then there's Flareon, who didn't even get Ember until level 31, and then Flamethrower at level 54 (at least in Yellow, it got Ember instead at level 16, but still no Flamethrower until... level 52). This is all while most other types will get something better than a 40 power STAB move by the time you reach Celadon, potentially much better, and the ones that didn't were the garbage types like Bug and Poison or the types with no moves like Ghost and Dragon.
@hi-i-am-atan Жыл бұрын
i have to wonder if the devs severely overestimated the power of the dot statues, considering how late a lot of pokemon learn poison moves. like, it's easy to overlook because weedle and ekans are two of the main early poison types and they get poison sting p. early, but then the also earlygame poison type nidos don't get their first stab move ( at a whopping 15 power! ) til their mid teens. then tentacool gets it only when its almost level 20, and sandshrew randomly picks it at 24 - _after_ it's been packing _slash_ for 7 levels! but. i mean, i suppose that's at least better than magmar picking up smog at level _52_ it's a similar story for multi-hit moves, complete with pokemon randomly picking them up at extremely late levels. i'm not entirely convinced gamefreak had the slightest grasp on their game's damage formula, despite it ... seemingly being designed to make it extremely easy to compare moves and statlines

Not to mention, Lorelei, Lance, and the Champion to some extent really give Fire types pain. Seriously, Lapras and Gyarados are absolute gatekeepers for all Fire types in a solo run in both Red and Blue and especially Yellow, where a lot of teams are much stronger, like Giovanni's team being way more stronger than his Red and Blue team, or the Yellow Champion having either Vaporeon or Cloyster as the gatekeeper after getting past Lapras and Gyarados. I didn't mention Bruno and Agatha, since the Fires can just brute force their away against the Ghosts and Bruno's team in Gen 1 is outright in ZU status by the challenge run community, to where people call him the Hiker or Blackbelt.
@OmegaTyrant Жыл бұрын
@@shadowtitanx3962 Lorelei's Lapras isn't too bad since you can boost to max before it and Slowbro has Amnesia to Mimic while not being threatening, if your Fire type doesn't have access to a boosting move, not to mention Lapras doesn't resist Fire moves. But yeah Lance's Gyarados is such a fucking bastard, I've been trying to beat the Red/Blue Elite 4 with each pokemon solo as low level as I could get (both with perfect and worst stats), and it's criminal how much Lance's Gyarados jacks the required level up alone for Fire types. The Charizard line would have been great for example and could have contended with or even beat out the Venusaur and Blastoise lines (Swords Dance and being fast is really nice), but that damn Gyarados alone jacks their required level up. If only Lance led with... absolutely anything else on his team and you could have at least boosted before the Gyarados, then it wouldn't have been so bad.

So Arcanine could at least learn Flamethrower by level up.

Flareon continues to be an absolute travesty of a pokemon from a design standpoint. Why GF decided to make the Fire Type that uses SPECIAL ATTACK to attack with its STAB pitiful special attack and even worse speed will always make no damn sense to me. And then in Gen 5 they decided to give the FIRE TYPE guts, so it has to rely on toxic orb or become even more uselessly slow if it gets para'd to throw out big Guts Boosted Facades, but even then. In S/V I decided to use Tera-Normal Flareon with Trailblaze, Facade, Protect and Flare Blitz(?) and it KIIINDA does things except there's a bunch of pokemon that want to Tera more than Flareon anyways.
@PlaguevonKarma Жыл бұрын
It's weird - in RBY, it was just fine design-wise. 110 Special and 130 Attack was a clear design point. They seemingly felt the need to have one Eeveelution not have Special Attack, like Articuno with the Bird Trio. In turn, they ended up destroying the two Pokemon that actually WANTED their Special Attack. You could say it was a package deal.
@shadowtitanx3962 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, GF always made failed archetypes, like slow Ice types, Physical Electric types, bulky defensive Rock types not named Tyranitar, etc. Even Iron Hands didn't leave an impact, even with Fighting STAB and a much higher Attack than Electivire. @@shadowtitanx3962 True, honestly I think Flareon's biggest weakness is probably its speed, as I don't think it REALLY needed more power outside of maybe a boosting move (Which, it has calm mind at least). Honestly I think it could've been neat if Flareon's HT was an ability that boosted its speed, maybe like a fire-immune Motor Drive or something, rather than... Guts, which doesn't help it at all because it still has a hard time actually getting to a speed to throw out its decent attacks, and getting status'd just has it wear itself down further esp considering its STAB is FLARE BLITZ for Physical sets, if memory serves right. (Obviously it also could've actually used 110 Special Attack over 95 Special Attack, but that was just Game Freak doing its weird 'make the slow mon be bulky even though its typing still renders it pretty damn frail' thing it likes to do)

Not once. >No idea what you meant by "numerous forms of media showing that the *Legendary Birds* are not legendary" at 0:56. Who the heck is sayin' that they're not legendaries?

I said that Arcanine's legendary status had been retconned early on, like, plainly in the video. These days China is called the East, which I also showed with a dex entry. East is also used to describe where the Treasures of Ruin came from. Legendary historically has implied a Pokemon is a single entity that controls an element. I was noting that the birds have been shown in multiples a lot of times, implying they could be seen as not, or that Legendary simply means extremely rare Pokemon. At the end of the day, Legendary seems to be a term Game Freak simply slaps onto a Pokemon. There's no reason for Solgaleo and Lunala to be Legendary - they're just Ultra Beasts in practice - but they're called it anyway. Same principle with Koraidon and Miraidon. That's really all it ever has been, if you think about it. The idea of Mythicals splitting from Legendaries is a recent thing too. Arcanine was **directly called a legendary in the official material I showed**, so for a period of time, it was. That's just...how the term works. Pokemon was a tiny game made by 30 people back then, it's nothing like how it is now. My personal interpretation of that lore was that Arcanine must have been Legendary in China, because of it being accessible in Kanto. Likewise, you could interpret the multiple Legendary Birds and so on in a similar way. Note that Arcanine wasn't the only thing called Legendary in that book - the Dragonite line was too. Pseudo-Legendaries were proper back then too! Just a different time.

Yes Fire types suck and Charizard isn't any much better in Gen 1 same with Vulpix/Ninetails both suck IMHO the only good fire type is magmar and you get it so late in Gen 1 its pretty much useless.

You mumble and slur your words too much, and it sounds like you're wearing a mask. You're just too hard to understand.
