Tradebacks requires you to have a theoretical RBY and GSC cartridges, as opposed to just theoretical RBY cartridges. Thats why it should be its own meta.

I always knew something wasn't right about Wartortle turning into Blastoise, even as a kid back in the day. The other two starters have a constant theme that they follow, Charmander with it's fire tail, and Bulbasaur with it's growing flower. Squirtle was shaping up to be a big fluffy turtle, then all of a sudden it losses it all and... random cannons? This was a terrible move by GameFreak, and Totartle should have never been removed. I don't hate Blastoise's design, but plugging it into Squirtle's evolutionary line feels way out of place. It looks like a chunky water bear with cat ears, which is nothing like it's pre-evolutions. Totartle looks awesome with it's big fluffy tail and fin like ears. I hope they consider alternate evolutionary paths for the gen 1 starters, maybe as a special story side quest in a newer generation, just so we can have Totartle as an option. I won't hold my breath on that though. It kinda bugs me knowing the truth about Blastoise, especially being that I knew something was up from the start. It NEVER felt right.

Competitive Pokémon fans are oftentimes baffled by Game Freak’s design decisions. This is because so so many people either forget or don't really think about the fact Smogon is an unofficial fanmade thing. It's so ingrained people forget that. Yes, Red and Blue Day 1 were not built for competitive. But by the back half of Gen 1 with stuff like Stadium and the Cup Rulesets(Poke Cup is just the Nintendo Cup rules, you've got the banlist cup 98 cut from the English version serving the UU role, Pika and Petit Cup basically serving the NU and PU roles, honestly you could argue the Gen 1 and 2 official formats were better balanced then VGC) and even Pokemon Yellow had a link mode specifically for this, Colosseum2. Honestly for Gen 1 and 2 specifically(Gen 3's official rules are basically VGC-Lite and Doubles steadily takes priority over Singles even if Singles rules DO exist, and more importantly there aren't great lower tier options) I really wish the official meta got more coverage, it makes choices make more sense. Snorlax goes from Top 2 in RBGY to just 'decent' and goes from 1st to 'Top 5 or Top 10 good mon' in Stadium rules, and while he's still probably Number 1 in Gen 2 with the legendaries banned it's more on the level of Tauros in Gen 1 and he probably isn't quite to Mewtwo's level of broken. Smogon's rules just so happen to remove Snorlax's biggest flaws, horrible at dealing with OHKO due to speed and bad at countering Evasion users due to neither being fast enough to pre-empt them and being one of the few Pokemon who couldn't learn Swift. Plus Pick 6 and Sleep Clause too

Snorlax is either Top 3 or The Best in most RBY Smogon formats. Best in Stadium OU, best in Tradebacks OU, Second Best in OU standard now that Chansey dropped, Third Best in Ubers and Best that Isn't an Uber. However it struggles a lot in Nintendo Sanctioned Formats. It's pretty good in Stadium rules, but standard RBY Cup rules it's not great and it's flat out bad with the original Blizzard pre-nerf. (Ironically Tauros is still a monster in the Cup ruleset). Nintendo wasn't stupid or ignorant of competitive. As early as Japanese Yellow nerfing Blizzard and the type chart changes during GSC's development they've known. They just DON'T KEEP SMOGON IN MIND BECAUSE IT'S A FAN MADE UNOFFICIAL FORMAT HOW DO PEOPLE NOT GET THIS? I STILL SEE PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS

OK, I'm 10 months late, and it shows I haven't been keeping up with Smogon decisions at all, but... bro. I've watched multiple videos over a month or two on the topic and am not even flabbergasted about the other formats NOT being Bo1 anymore. What I'm flabbergasted about is gen 4 getting... denied a right to vote. ...What?

I don't think the Substitute Buffs and Hyper Beam nerfs are a problem in terms of the actual Meta Gamefreak had in mind, that being the 3V3 cup formats, PokeCup/Nintendo Cup and Petit and Pika Cup. Nintendo Cup 97 was way too aggressive and offense focused and with the sleep nerfs buffing substitute was a good way to slow down the meta a bit. Also Hyper Beam was either a bug or something they were experimenting with(maybe Double Edge and Submission getting the same treatment was another bug, or maybe them swapping things to test if that helped balance). Despite what people said for years Gamefreak has had competitive in mind balancing wise since Yellow and Stadium(you have actually done a good job ending this misinformation), it's just they never had Smogon in mind and so so many people forget that's an unofficial format(the amount of people asking why Gamefreak nerfed minimize in Gen 6 and 7 when it's already banned just drives me insane, IT'S NOT BANNED TO THEM). Buffing Snorlax in Gen 2 made perfect sense with what they had. Even Stadium and the Blizzard nerf buffed him a little bit(he's the best OU mon in Stadium format, and in the official Nintendo Formats while not THAT good he's better than in Cup 97). It just so happens by sheer chance all the bans and rules Smogon put in place(No OHKO moves, no Evasion, sleep clause, freeze clause) basically fixed all of Snorlax's weaknesses, his slow speed meant he was horrible at dealing with OHKO moves(everyone could hit him and he could hit nobody due to how speed worked with it), his slow speed meant he could be put to sleep by pretty much anything or paralyzed or even poisoned before he could attack, and the slow speed meant he couldn't blitz an evasion spammer or paralyze them before they could set up, nor was he so offensively potent he just needed one lucky hit to end them. Nerfing Blizzard helped a little bit as it made being tanky viable and not basically a death sentence, as did the Stadium changes nerfing Sleep and changing the crit calculations to be way more favorable to slow Pokemon and less favorable to fast Pokemon. Even in the actual Nintendo Formats which still allowed OHKO and Evasion-Boosting he got noticeably better and in the modern day I believe he's cracked the Top 10. just so happened by chance Smogon's rules removed his remaining weaknesses, jumps from Top 25 to Top 3 in Yellow Rules and from Top 10 to Number 1 in Stadium Rules thanks to this.

Smogon is kinda in a weird spot where they neither use the original version nor the most recent version. They have the blizzard nerf, the move set changes(Charizard getting Fly, Scyther getting Wing Attack, Primeape getting Low Kick, Pikachu getting Surf) and the sprites all originating from the original Japanese release of Yellow. In America we got these seperately, but they all originated at once there and that's what they use. Meanwhile Stadium which is the newest and is the one actually balanced around competitive play with the knowledge of what happened at the Nintendo Cup and the bugs fixed is ignored. Is it because the competitive modes Stadium(and funnily enough Yellow's Link Colosseum mode) are based around aren't what Smogon uses? Nintendo Cup and Poke Cup and Petit Cup and Pika Cup(and those banlisted Nintendo Cups from later). Nostalgia? Another case of Gen 2 Snorlax syndrome where the community has found stability and doesn't want to spend 5 years regaining equilibrium for a minor thing? Seething hatred of the N64 controller? Gary Oak somehow?

Everything used in competitive play existed in the NA release of Yellow. The Blizzard nerf, learnset changes, etc. That, according to the tiering policy (that I wrote!!!), is what is used. The Japanese games aren't what's used - otherwise, Swift and Mega Drain wouldn't work properly. The N64 games aren't used because the mainline games are the focus, rather than the generation. Generations are a socially constructed thing, whereas mainline games are not, if that makes sense. That, and there is no desire to switch to something else. The Stadium mechanics make the game significantly slower, as moves like Substitute and Hyper Beam were changed for the worst.

@@PlaguevonKarma Isn't Hyper Beam still that way to this day tho? I meant specifically outside of bugs, the game all these changes originated from was the Japanese release of yellow. Both the Blizzard Nerf and Learnset changes. (In the west we got those separately so one could theoretically treat them as two patches) So it's one big balance patch and that's what Smogon uses

This is basically just Patch 3.0 (Patch 2.0 is Japanese Yellow, adding new movesets to a couple mons and nerfing Blizzard. That's what Smogon uses. RGB(Japan) are Patch 1.0, a couple moves missing and stronger blizzard)

There is a universe not too far from our own where Nintendo pushes these official metas in English meta way way harder(like imagine airing television clips of Pokemon battles in-between 4kids episodes) and Smogon just, doesn't exist(or is way way nicher). Nintendo's failure to properly get their official formats out there(which they have always had) prior to the latter half of Gen 4 gave Smogon a massive head start to the point the other stuff was utterly ignored by Poketubers in the Gen 5 and Gen 6 eras, Smogon was de-facto official. That's changed over time as people who have always known a well promoted VGC and adjacents are growing up and increasingly looking at Smogon for what it is even if people don't think of it that way. Unofficial. Fanmade. In fact Gen 9 being the very first Gen where Smogon OU is falling behind VGC in player base even on Showdown instead of just cartridge is causing a ton of doomerism even though realistically this is how things should have been, official formats should be more popular at least for the main good characters(NU and stuff would always have a niche). Smogon just got 4 gens of dominance thanks to Western Gamefreak not doing much and then it took 4 gens for VGC to close the gap.

Someone recommended me this video after talking about the existence of Mega Jynx (it made me really hate it a lot, I don't even hate Jynx I am just indifferent towards it as a Pokemon itself, but with that said it's original version of the design is... ick). This is a very interesting watch and gives at least some insight about Jynx's potential origins as well as going over some of the Pokemon's history over the years during their controversies. And it's true, its very hard to shake off those roots and origins in spite of these changes to at least makes the design at least somewhat digestible due to its connotations, especially now with Jynx's scrapped Mega Evolution design and how it looked like. I also see it as way more offensive compared to the non-mega one, but I also thought of a very weird comparison of what would happen if Jynx had Alolan Dugtrio's hair combined with it being a Future Paradox Pokemon. In theory that idea would've worked just fine but given the way the hair is shaped as well as the eyes and the lips, it's just not good in execution.

Back here after cut Mega Jynx artwork was found in XY repos. I can understand defending the best of three for the health of the games culture and that matters though encouraging it to also diversefie with offical tourneys to also sometime be best of one could be helpful to allow some weaker mons or riskyer plays to also be done to shake up the format every now and then. TL:DR, Gamefreak was not balancing based on the metas people play now. This is like how you see people nowadays complaining about some buff/nerf that doesn't make sense in a Smogon context even though it makes perfect sense in a VGC context. Like yeah, Gamefreak adding a ton of new moves that punished evasion is pointless IF you always play with it banned, but in VGC that's kind of a big deal. Kind of understandable pre-Gen 5, in the English speaking world Gamefreak did a horrible job of promoting their official rulesets and formats back then, if they had done as well as they did in Japan Smogon might not exist at all or would be more niche.
