After watching this I built one. About 2 hours and mounted it on my gate that holds horses. Pretty slick. Thanks for sharing

I have seen 'similar' but this one is a very good one. Also the HINGES are a contributing factor, the way it is hung it uses gravity for a "spring" to close the gate when released by the person working the gate. Unlike a spring gravity doesn't wear out!! I have been welding over 50 years and grew up in Agriculture (beef cattle production) and like you, I never cease to be amazed and the SIMPLE ideas I see that nobody else seems to have thought of. You know, to ME anyway, it is the SIMPLE device that WORKS that is genius. Anyone can build something complicated with a million parts, but being SIMPLE and having as few as possible moving parts, brother that is the realm of 'Thinkers outside the Box". Good Video!!! I liked, shared Subbed, THANK YOU and good luck, I enjoy "Arc-e-ology too!!" BB

Nice, robust latch. Looks so much more reliable than many seen in stores. I need a one-way latch like this on my bank account.

All I need is a bit of metal and my everlast welder and viola, a nice solid latch. Perfect!

Why do you need viola for?

@Anonymous No! You are wrong. I am sure what he ment is that he like to do some welding with a flower in his hair. I have a song for this occasion and it goes like this: Violets are blue roses are red You both like to weld With violets in your head

I have a metal gate that goes into my backyard that I did something similar to that on. The difference is that my gate opens both ways, so the latch mechanism that I designed mounted to the inside face of the 4x4 post and had two similar vertical pieces. I did not put a crook in the bottom ends, but rather left them straight and welded a piece of square tubing of the appropriate length to keep the two vertical rotation pieces from rotating too far. www.monkeywrench.space/diy/gate-latch-1.png www.monkeywrench.space/diy/gate-latch-2.png

@@albertolopez-ol2dy -- Here's a more detailed drawing that shows more of how the gate fits in with the latch: www.monkeywrench.space/navy-vet-1959/gate-latch-03.png The smaller rectangle on the right side of the post is the cover plate that I moved to the side to show the inner workings of the mechanism... I only show 4 of the metal pickets in drawing of the gate. In actuality, there are 29 of them and they are spaced 3.5" apart. The key thing for it to work is that the top rail must extend past the end picket. This could also be accomplished with a commercially manufactured gate by welding / attaching a rod that extended past the end of the frame of the gate. The gate must be less than the width of the gate opening so that it can swing in or out. By only latching the gate at the top, I have allowed the possibility that one of my dogs could at least theoretically push the bottom of the gate out enough to squeeze out, but the gate is pretty heavy and the dogs are large, so it would take more than a slight opening for them to get out. Besides, I also have a livestock electric fence charger set up on the gate so that it is electrified, so after being zapped the first couple of times, they stay well away from it. If you wanted to though, it would be possible to put another horizontal piece that engaged the latch in the middle of the gate instead so that the latch point was in the middle instead of the top. Because of the height of my gate, I chose to put it at the top since that means that I do not need to bend down to reach it (the gate is slightly over waist high).

You look like you might know the answer to this one. Imagine a big, circular chunk of steel, pivoting somewhere near the bottom rim and a chunk of rebar in front of it, touching the front edge level with the center. Now remove the steel from the circle to allow it a quarter turn forwards (around the rebar). What we should then have is a sturdy locking mechanism that holds in all directions. Does this exist? Does it work? If so, what's it called?

I'm having trouble visualizing it via your text description. Have you tried SketchUp for drawing? The web based version is free and not too painful to learn. There's someone with a hour long tutorial on how to use it on KZbin and that helped me a lot. I was able to create a 3D drawing for what I did for my gate that is somewhat similar to the gate in this video, although it allows the gate to swing both ways. www.monkeywrench.space/diy/gate-latch-1.png www.monkeywrench.space/diy/gate-latch-2.png

Idea is good, cutting section out of post bad, both sides of latch should have been mounted on outside of gate with less bolt free space for gate to rattle.

Bad how? Has it failed? No. Some 'rattle'? That's your beef? Gates of that size are noisy. Period. Always some expert chiming in with unasked advice. Gate is just fine.
