MAKING CUSTOM GATE LATCHES & HANGING A CUSTOM SIGN ON THE NEW MASSIVE METAL PIPE FENCE ENTRANCE

It’s finishing touches day on the 8 Inch Custom Pipe Entrance Project. We aren’t stopping till this custom pipe fence and custom pipe entrance are buttoned up nicely. Our customer had a custom ranch sign made so we will attach it to the fence and create a solution to the double pipe gates being taken by the wind. We know it’s more than frustrating when you are trying to close a double gate entrance for one of the gates to swing on you so we need to create a stop that is functional but doesn’t take away from the overall design of the whole property entrance.

Looks good. You may not have shown it on camera but welding a retention tab or bead on the solid catch bars would be a good idea. To keep someone from removing them.

I’ve always just hung the down latch on crossbars when not in use. That little holder you added is quite slick. I hope you don’t mind, but I’m stealing your idea. That’s a very sharp entrance you have built. Strong work.

I've always driven pipe into the ground , flush, to receive the drop latches . When open , the ground will end up being an arched plowed furrow, as owner will put it in different places and soil will loosen allowing gate movement.

I enjoy watching your videos. As far as I know we are not related? My father started out welding in the Bremerton Washington ship yards (1964) Delmer C. Ross. After moving back to his home state he ran a "Ross General Repair" shop for 50+ years. Passing away in 2017 with 9 welders, always got to have one more. If it was broken he would weld it or make a new one! Most of the time my father required customers to "bring it to me". He would travel but very little. At 94 years old he repaired a lot of stuff. I am not a welder, I am a retired Auto Mechanic, I really enjoy watching your videos. Austin Ross you are doing a Great Job, Don Ross

I learn so much watching your videos. I’m a welder now but I used to build fence for a living. A good trick for those drop rods is to drive a small piece of pipe in the ground where they will be going in at ( far enough to where it won’t catch a tire or foot) gives a nice solid hold for them

"Mmm-hmm.., I'm thoroughly pleased.." You should be. I'm 65, recently retired from pipefitting. (since 1978) 1st 15 years as an instrument fitter, so I was taught to make everything pleasing to the eye. And boy-oh-boy, your work is definitely that! Of course, being a fitter, I've got a pet peeve when it comes to weldors... Many believe that they are fitters because they've stood, watched, and worked next to fitters. That type wants to both fit and weld, while his fitter is demoted to a weldor's helper! LOL! BUT! --- You are one that really is both. Yep.., I'd happily have been your weldor's helper any time. Some have told me that I'm the best fitter they've ever seen. I know different. I've worked with some top tier weldors and fitters. I'm not even in the top 20%. I suppose those compliments came from people that haven't been around much...? Great work! (of art) I'll grant you bonus points for rounded edges and corners, (no sharp edges for livestock and people to get cut on) but especially for understanding and working with the metal contraction (draw) while working alone. Even when working with help, it's extremely hard to achieve perfect alignment. From my little screen, everything appears square, level, and Plumb-PLUMB --- not Plumb-some! LOL. You're a true Craftsman. An Old-Timey Craftsman... From a time when that title meant something. I think it's unfortunate that the general public doesn't have a clue about the level of art that can be worked into what we do. To reach your level, a man must be an artist. "Professional" doesn't even come close. "Professional" only means that you get paid for your work. It has no relationship to the quality of workmanship. (the last half of this comment is for the general public, the ones without any reference and aren't able to appreciate, or even see the beauty) Long life and God's blessings!

Your message is greatly appreciated. I am very very humbled by it. Thank you. I also want to thank you and your generation for all the blood sweat and tears (for a lack of better words) that y’all have put in over the years so the generations behind you don’t have to hurt as bad (as long as we listen to our elder’s wise words) and learn as hard of lessons and also learn them in such a sacrificial way (loss of life, ect) to accomplish what we do. I don’t take my elder’s wisdom lightly. There is no better advise than life experience. Thank you Austin

Back when I made similar "signs" I'd take some 1" flat 1/4" stock & go around all the edges with it to give a true 3-D - it goes fast & the visual effect is really good - I did some very prominent ones, seen by loads of people daily. I also quietly pity whoever has to paint all that lot ^^. That sounds like a right PITB to me. :-) But, it is certainly an impressive entrance - very robust.
@jamesward5721
@jamesward5721 Жыл бұрын
You can create a much cleaner "Keep it shut & straight" latch by making an arm that locks the 2 gates together minus the ground pin btw - make it latch down on 2 horizontal members so they are tied together - bang, gates stay nicely shut & look super clean. Plus it opens/shuts mega fast when it's cold/rainy and you don't fancy dicking about with ground pins - which nobody does, tbh.. I'm honestly surprised, considering the sheer expense this client has gone to, that they didn't opt for powered open/close - then again, they went for levelled stone as the driveway - and that never lasts - maybe they're allergic to bound macadam.. no accounting for Folks "thoughts" on stuff.
