This Last Episode (13 o 13) of the KnowGIS, Professional Training Series focuses on Spatial Analysis.
Introduction to spatial analysis. Operations and data analysis tools, especially spatial analysis, are important components for the functionalities of a GIS. In the module "Basic Spatial Analysis" background information is provided about the performance and the application of operations in Spatial Analysis (SA). The module "Intermediate Spatial Analysis" offers advanced information about this topic in terms of special operations. This course is an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS): tools for visualizing and analyzing spatial data. GIS is an invaluable tool that can make maps, guide decisions, answer questions, and advocate for change. A geographic information system provides a rich and flexible medium for visualizing and interacting with geographic data. A GIS includes a variety of functions for portraying attribute distributions and transforming spatial objects. You can also interact with a GIS to turn raw data into information useful for answering spatial and temporal questions. When portraying information, attributes (or classes of attributes) can be displayed with a variety of graphic symbols and used as labels to communicate information. Additionally, you can manipulate the shape of spatial objects to enhance interpretability. GIS analysis can be used to answer questions like: Where’s the most suitable place for a housing development? Most data and measurements can be associated with locations and, therefore, can be placed on the map. Using spatial data, you know both what is present and where it is. The real world can be represented as discrete data, stored by its exact geographic location (called “feature data”), or continuous data represented by regular grids (called “raster data”). Additional information that describes what is at each location can be attached; this information is often referred to as “attributes.
