Sediments within archaeological sites and the depositional history and geomorphology of landscapes that surround them are very important for our understanding of site-formation processes, the interpretation of layers and features, and the climatic and vegetational history of site hinterlands. This video covers a few of the basic elements of geoarchaeology, but focuses on how to characterize sediments' colour, texture, and pH and the rounding, sorting and density of "clasts" (particles, pebbles and cobbles) within them. There is also a short animation of the formation of a river valley and its associated relic terraces.
