Ready to take your first steps in ancient pottery? Whether you found some on a dig, on a walk, or in your back garden, it's amazing to hold a piece of history in your hands. What do archaeologists do with pottery? And how do you identify it? In this workshop, Community Archaeologist Johanna will introduce the basics.
Some 3D pottery for you to examine after the workshop:
1. Iron Age potsherd: skfb.ly/6SopY
2. Possible Iron Age potsherd: skfb.ly/6SopZ
3. Romano-British flagon: skfb.ly/KI7Y
4. Roman Samian ware: skfb.ly/FYDx

This was great!! As an student (here in the states) MANY years ago, I was fortunate enough to get into the first 6-week archaeology course offered at the college that I attended. (I had to beg to get in since I had already graduated.) Subsequently was able to work on several prehistoric sites in Pennsylvania. I was so happy to find 'Time Team' and now it has led me to DigVentures! Thanks so much for a great pottery 'review class' for me. You both did a wonderful job! Please, more videos on pottery and EVERYTHING related to archaeology!!

Thanks so much for this presentation. Thanks both Johanna and David. I hope one day to make such clean and fitting :-) discoveries. Meanwhile, this adds to our understanding of the life of so many humans through the ages, and that I do enjoy. I "dig" DigVentures.

Thanks Johanna & David excellent as always, do you ever have to treat the finds with chemicals or place them in air tight containers to stop them from deteriorating?

I need help of ID pottery shards found in a ravine , it could be from soldiers since there are war forts from the war of 1812 not far away from the location where i found the shard , the storm recently brought this into the streams cause i never saw anything like this before walking in the woods

Thank you! A note to the chap showing the pottery, the camera doesn't focus better by holding things too close to it.

@@Digventures Also having the face in the shot at that range while showing something causes focus to be off. So object to show centered and face on the side so the auto focus doesn't think the person is important and try to focus on them. If at a distance from the camera hold it in front of the face so it blocks part of it. Auto focus are made to target faces first.

Some ancient Roman pottery was toilet paper. Romans made clay pots for voting. They would write their suggestions on it, and the Senate would vote by dropping white, or red rocks into it. And if it was a nay, it was broken apart , and all Romans had to wipe their butts with it. . Have you found nay?
