I just finished watching an interesting episode (the team's first Roman mosaic find) before deciding I'd enjoy another on this chilly Sunday morning in the Pacific Northwest of USA. At first, I wondered if the host, Tony, was wearing a wig! It would be nice for those of us new to watching the program--this old Yank for one--if original episode numbers and or dates were included in the brief description that Odyssey appends to the upload. I know, I'm on the web and can search it out; but, why not save viewers the time and effort for want of an additional line of text, right?

Amazing, a town, farm, or settlement was here, then after 2,000 years it's just a hay field, the ruins a foot under the sod, everything above ground disappeared. The short temporary mark of man.

Damn, I miss Suffolk. Between my military time (81st Security Police Sqdn) and the following 7 years I spent there as a civilian, I had 11 wonderful years in that place. I live on the West Coast of the US. You guys in Great Britain find artifacts from 2,000 years ago and say: (bad imitation of British accent) “Quite nice.” Me? I find a 1978 penny with my metal detector and shriek with glee for finding such an “OLD” piece of history.

I am orig from San Diego and archeological evidence shows at least 10,000 yrs of habitation in SD County. Different types of find than in UK.

i spent some time with an archeologist in new mexico and i learned how to spot flake scatter (from tool making) i figured out for myself how to find defensible spaces near a water source, because that's where one finds evidence of habitation. one easy rule, if a spot was a pleasant place to sit and chip stone thousands of years ago, it might look like a pleasant place to sit now. the last time the county put down gravel on my road there was a prehistoric left handed pole scraper by my gate. evidence of prehistory is all around, and it's not that hard to read the signs, if you find yourself at a loss, there are archeologists at your local museums, universities, they're easy to dig up. also, spent cartridges can tell tales of fights and skirmishes. read the land.

Oh! Tony! Where'd you get all that hair? Very interesting excavations and finds, though. In 1950s America, the word "dig" was sometimes used for the word "like". If you "dig" something, it meant you "like" it. You just "dig" these excavations, don't you?

It’s pretty amazing that nearly anywhere in the UK a little digging brings up artifacts. In the US you could dig a 100 mile trench in some places and not find a thing. My grandfather had a field on a bluff next to the Elm River where a native encampment had been at one time. You could find arrow heads and beads but they were far and few between.

Tbh 3days seems like a TV executive decision on programming. I understand the experts involved have to speculate on the context with such time restrictions which leaves me curiously unsatisfied with many digs.

Three days was what they could pay for. Yes, there were lots of volunteer field walkers and university students, but... All the tents, catering, camera crew, post-production, and time for the archaeologists away from their bread-and-butter teaching jobs (and their own site digs): it was an expensive programme for its time.

Also, the archaeologists were professionals, most of them were employed at various universities, so had jobs they worked Monday through Thursday. And, three days added some suspense- could they get it done?

Because they all have their own careers/lives in different places. They do more than three days work in the three days, which jump starts the local archaeologists on finding out what they have to deal with.

Early to mid 90's "soothing"? Gulf War (which I served in, not soothing at all.) Rwandan Civil War, Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers, Luzon earthquake, Croatian War of Independence, Somalia.. Soviet coup...Mount Pinatubo, Afghan Civil War, Chechnya.... etc etc (I'm sure I'm missing some major events!) The 90's were "pretty alarming" for a great many people!

This particular episode was within the first or second season. During the scene where they are drinking the wine from the re-created Roman pottery - someone makes a comment about "1995" - being stamped on the bottom of the cup - which would have been during season two.
