Why is it that when archeologists don't understand something, the go-to is always "It could be of religious, ritual, or spiritual significance?"

The dodecahedron might be for forming tripods for camp cooking, might explain the various different sized holes for different sized cut poles?
@Debbie-henri
@Debbie-henri 2 ай бұрын
That's actually a smart answer. It would be a quick way of making a tripod of sticks secure and stable before hanging a pot on it. I was thinking that they were perhaps a way of making knots more secure around 'scaffolding' when Romans were making buildings (since we all know they built multiple storied buildings as well as ground floor villas). Thread the rope through the holes, the knobbly bits on the outside also acting to keep both posts and knots secure, reducing movement.

These are game balls. All about the same size. Easy to carve because round rocks are plentiful. People played a game using them, like Bocce.

@@rickdunn7585 Good point. They may well have served dual purposes. Militia lug these around as weapons and in their off time, use them harmlessly as game ‘balls’. That could’ve easily been a thing that triggered a broader tradition. I agree that some look purposely unround, with bumps and projections in places that invites open speculation around intended purpose. Great observation, Rick. These are intriguing objects alright.

I would say the balls are weavers weights. Being decorative is an example of there talent. The cast bronze device is a form of finger knitting for making different size tubes of wool...the tubes could be put together to make different articles of clothing for babies and people generally... Plus the articles themselves make for useful reserves of bronze material for making weapons...being lost wax castings offer the fine detail seen.

They are cooking rocks. Heat the rock in direct flame place in clay pot and the water boils instantly without having the pottery directly over the fire. Heat or cook food, purify water etc. the designs increases the surface area of the stone which allows for an increased heat transfer. Yep, that’s it.

I think the wrong questions are being asked. How were they made? If they were cast then how did they make the mold? If they were forged and welded, how did they get such sharp angles at the vertices? There’s a level of skill in their manufacture that needs to be understood.

The hollow metal objects (3:00) are land surveyors' devices (the name of which I do not know) They are used to determine distant lengths by sighting, (lengths perpendicular to the sighting) hence the different diameters of holes . The small balls are used to position the device. It's a really curious device, normally of Roman origin....

@3:34 I would like to suggest a more mundane use for the dodecahedron: Tent poles connectors for different diameters of poles used vertically to hold the tent corners and some poles use horizontally to hold the walls in place to keep them from sagging. Different sized holes means that one could use any locally cut poles and they would probably fit or could be trimmed to fit easily. The little round balls keep the tenting material off of the connectors during wet weather and can be used to slash down the tenting material to the corner especially in windy and rainy weather. May explain why these are not found at/with religious places and artifacts; the ancient peoples were masters of recycling especially hard-to-come-by metals so there may be only a relatively small amount of these around.

For the lock-rings, I'm suggesting a beard decoration - you would probably twist your beard until it was tight enough to push through the gap in the ring, then let it expand to fill it - I don't have a beard or a ring to test with so this is conjecture :-) - for the pestle/mortars I'm thinking that the shape must be functional - I think that the the pestle doubled as a tool with which to apply the substance being ground and this dictated the shape of the mortar aswell. I am going with warpaint - perhaps woad.

I believe the balls are "Juicer Balls". Push down and roll over fruit and you get fruit juice. Better than drinking water all the time. I believe the dodecahedrons are "Lots". Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart. It's for making decisions by chance like rolling the dice. The knobs at the corners helps make it easier to tell which face is facing up on uneven surfaces.

Much like today we have prized “nicknacks” on our shelves and credenza, the first 3 items, carved stone balls, the decahedrons, and chalk drums may have been prized gifts given as a symbol of admiration or appreciation. Some would be so prized as to find their way into graves. Like today, they are displayed in significant parts of one’s home as a symbol of gratitude or importance. In all cases, these 3 items were very difficult to make and would hold great value. I’m not convinced everything in the past solely held just mystical, religious, or astronomical significance.

Those drum patterns show the sacred offset rhythm the ancients used. They went to great lengths to show us the offset. The entire configuration of the Giza Pyramids show the same wave folder, and splitter. Cant be any clearer. If you want be able to do the Shiva Tandava dances, you need to know the rhythm and hoe to use it. Tesla said "Energy, vibration, and frequency" he never considered how important rhythm and dance was. Its the key.
