Yes. Fred showed up here because he was facing a serious operation & gave Archie the letter in case the worst happened. Fred survived and returned for 1-2 more episode(s).

I don't believe that Fred was literally dying. He was going to have a heart operation and I think he wrote the letter for Archie to read in case he didn't survive.​@@danielevans9379

Edith was out of line in this episode. This was Archie's family, she had no business inviting him to dinner without asking Archie. She needed to keep her nose out of it as she had no idea what had happened to them in their youth.
