Thanks for reacting to this. I saw him perform this live, it gave me goosebumps and I cried. My grandparents were part of this legal government kidnapping of Native Australian children, it is commonly known as the "Stolen Generations". It didn't stop until the early 1970s and it has affected our whole family. 💔

At the age of two or three, Roach and his sisters and brothers, along with the other Indigenous Australian children of the Stolen Generations, were forcibly removed from their family by government agencies and placed in an orphanage. He never met his parents but did reunite with two sisters and extended family. As a homeless teenager, Archie met his life partner, Ngarrindjeri woman Ruby Hunter, at a shelter in Adelaide. The pair, who shared a deep love of music, formed a lifelong bond. Life for Roach became a series of foster homes, at least one of them brutal. His parents died before he could see them again. Disillusioned and dispossessed, he took to a scuffling, alcoholic life in the streets, interspersed with brawling and jail stints. Over time he found ways to face his problems. RIP 30 July 2022 He was 66. The announcement did not cite the cause, but Mr. Roach had struggled with lung cancer and emphysema Peace out.

There is a great Aussie movie called "Rabbit proof fence" it covers the story of 2 sisters who were part of the stolen generation. It is amazing and worth reviewing or at least watching for your own benefit. Thx Mike (and Gary) for doing these important songs.

It deeply saddens me to hear this song about the stolen generation. I cannot imagine the pain that their parents felt not knowing where their children were, and the terror that the children may have felt being separated from their parents. I trust and pray that similar incidents like this never happen anywhere in the world again.

Having acknowledged the difficulty of responding I think you spoke very well indeed.

At the time of this recording, 30 years since the first, he was singing with one lung and had suffered several minor strokes but he kept on performing to the end because all of his songs were important but especially this one. But if you would like to hear him in full voice sing something that won’t break your heart I can say that influences from his time at Salvation Army orphanage and the Scots couple who fostered him later (Hank Williams fans) to all the music around him as an adult his songwriting was diverse and often had a restorative blues resonance, like Get Back To The Land or Song To Sing (official Video) or Rally Round The Drum. I have to stop I have too many favs. Thank you.

Such a powerful song, pretty hard to not have leaky eyes and feel shame at the treatment meted out. The statement at the beginning , is because as I understand it Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders prefer not to view people that have passed. The more I learn about Aboriginal culture the more I admire it, the knowledge and skills go back 10s f thousands of years. We should learn.
