I loved Carson, and still see him as the king of talk shows. In large part, this is because it wasn't forced, and he seemed truly interested in people and not just buttering them up. It is unfortunate that this seems hard to do on TV today, where every guest is there to plug his/her book or movie or album, and the hosts are desperate to show how clever THEY are. I think most of them are very clever and talented, but they should leave that for the monologue and bits, and then be more natural when interviewing. Some do that better than others, and those are the only ones I can watch from time to time.
@brianarbenz72064 жыл бұрын
Excuse me, but on this very show in 1984, Carson plugs Freddie DeCordova's book with that diary routine. Then Bob Newhart comes out and plugs the season premier of his show, and his upcoming Seattle appearance. Yeah, right, people didn't plug their stuff on talks show back then! And, Yes Johnny Carson is gifted on the air; I give him full credit for that. But what makes you think he wasn't out to show how clever he was when he was doing interviews? Carson was egotistical, overbearing and so hard to work for, he often put chills down the spine of his staff. And as of this 1984 show, he had just gone through his THIRD divorce. Two of those wives said he beat them while drunk.

When Bob had his show, he and Dean Martin were doing a skit and they started throwing one-liners at each other ad lib. It cracked up the crew so bad they let it go for about 20 minutes and then the episode ended. It is now TV gold newhart, Martin, and Bob Hope were 3 actors that could do that they didnt follow the script. They played off of the other person in the scene

While it was pretty hilarious their conversation over Carson being a Scorpio and Scorpios being secretive, Carson was in fact a very private man off camera and when he retired he practically disappeared from public. I would like to remind some of you who think that Johnny only had comedians on his show who were "clean" and wholesome, Johnny was the first to feature Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams on the Tonight Show. All four were known for using colorful language in their stage shows and recordings but were just as funny on the tonight show when the language was more suited for network television. Mr Newhart was also known for using some profanity on stage. You can't measure overall comedy over the decades by what you see on The Tonight Show.

There are plenty of good enough comedians now too, but the art of hosting a show like that, with the subtle finesse of playing up your guests, knowing when to edge them on and when to reel it back in, unfortunately died with Carson and its heirs got completely lost after Letterman.

If you get Over The Air channels on your TV, they rerun Carson's shows every night, generally ones from the late 1970s to the end of his show in the early '90s. There's another channel that reruns the Dick Cavett show as well. But you can't beat Johnny, especially when he's got a rapport with the people he came up with, like Newhart or Rickles, Buddy Hackett, Joan Rivers. It's not just celebrities pushing their latest series, it's like watching two old friends goofing around with each other, like here.
