Newhart's hit sitcom "Newhart" was in its last season, and Rickles was about to shoot "Keaton's Cop."

People don’t realize that Don Rickles has Class more than many other of the comedian salve is funny he doesn’t swear he doesn’t drink he doesn’t smoke he’s married to one person and he was just an angel I had the pleasure of seeing him only one time because I try to watch them on television as much as I could but he was a terrific human being

Don was a true sweetheart. "Mister Warmth" was not said in irony; it was a true description. His comedy was insulting, but in real life, nobody was sweeter. When you see him bantering with Carson and others, that's just his schtick. Watch for when he takes a moment to flash that smile at his friends. He loved deeply.

Don Rickles son dies 21 years later at age forty. He spoke of how it devastated him in an interview with Dan Rather. If you, out there, can find a rebroadcast of The Big Interview With Dan Rather, it is well worth watching. I found that it showed the humble, sensitive side of Mr. Rickles. Rip, Mr Warmth.

Don is a sweet guy. I was lucky enough to work with him and Tony O at Belterra Casino. The nicest people. And I met Barbara. I had to joke with Don "Hey Don, now we know who's the Commander." What a guy. Barbara was sweet too. Their whole group treated us well. I worked Security for his show, brought him to/from his room, to the show, and dinner and back. Man I miss Don.

Watching these old shows bring me to tears laughing. Back when being PC didn't exist and people called them as they seen them. We are not talking about race here, they are talking about views and getting laughs. Nobody was getting up in arms about what someone said. All religions could be made fun of and people related to it, even if it was their own religion. If we can't find humor in our own beliefs mankind is lost.
@jovetj4 жыл бұрын
Oh, people got up in arms about it. But it just wasn't taken so personally as today. People have been raised today with the notion that they have the right to never be offended, never be questioned, never be ridiculed, and never be wrong. I was very young when Bob Newhart was on television, I didn't get his style of humor back then. I remember wondering why he was even considered funny. But now when I watch old TV shows from the past I can see that he was a brilliant performer with the ability to make people laugh using only body language. Now Don was a different kind of personality, he could make you laugh even if you were the butt of his jokes. He had a warmth about him that manifested itself even when he was attacking you. Bob & Don were both warm wonderful human beings who really cared about their craft and cared deeply about the people who came to watch them perform. They were the last of the great comediennes of our time, they didn't need to use foul language to shock their audience to be funny. Performers today, especially black performers need to use outrageous language to elicit some kind of response from the audience. Bob and Don needed only themselves and an audience and they were off and running until the tears of laughter were running down your cheeks.

Don did resort to stereotypes in much of his acts...but this was also accepted in his day, and as it is today it is tremendously overly played out to be offensive. Say what you want to say about Jews and money, Irish and drinking, Polish and stupidity...anyone reading this now will say I'm offensive to say this (and I'm not saying it other than to bring out the stereotypes - and I could even get nasty with others) but Don did use these common associations in his act...but we all knew too, that other than french people, like me, to be the best lovers in the world, that the other identities were only generally true.
