Back Country House | Ltd Architectural Design Studio | ArchiPro

Located on a secluded bush-clad site this house plays on the uniquely NZ typology of the back country hut. Aiming at simplicity it is comprised of a single volume for living/cooking/eating and a lean-to annex housing the lower floor service/sleeping areas. The spaces are open and shared as opposed to enclosed and separate. The experience is one of enhanced connection with each other, and of an enhanced connection to the surrounding environment.
The living area opens fully on two sides, having the feel of an outdoor room, and the fire and baths located on the deck draw daily activities out of the house and into nature. Extensive use of locally sourced bandsawn macrocarpa inside and out, passive heating/ventilation and high performance insulation make the house of low impact environmentally. Rough hewn natural materials tie the house effortlessly into its setting, while galvanised corrugated iron is used to strengthen the hut aesthetic.

Because Architecture is the art of telling a story in this case of the people who occupy the space. It’s not just supposed to look cool so presenting the story beyond the facade with the people who define the space is exactly what they were trying to accomplish. It’s to give a sense of humanity. It’s a home not a house and I can only assume that’s how they wanted it to be represented.

Nice home back in the woods. Liked the nana doors. Owner is correct too! About getting kids outside. They should have many great family experiences. Chimney on tbe deck. Roast marshmellows etc. Hiking, hunting, gardening etc.

Obviosuoy he doesn't want to show the floorplan or layout of the house because people will replicate it. The key to something like this: work with the surrounding environment, make clever use of space, and keep things open and spacious making use of the surrounding natural elements

Beautifully filmed and narrated. I'm curious as to how those outside bath tubs get filled - wouldn't it be cool if there was a back boiler type of hot water system running off that wood fireplace.... I suspect lots of saucepans and kettles of hot water is the reality. I'd love to see the actual solution that keeps the deck clear visible taps, pipes etc.
