So many things I like about this space but I don't see it as especially unique. I've seen older homes that had living spaces on upper floors while having bedrooms on the lower. And I don't see how having a sleep area closer to the street's noise is an improvement in this case??

@Nick FL The previous comment, in my opinion wasn't, for real, so wrong. I will explain my thought. During the last two decades, more or less, all the most trendy, sometimes important, national and international magazines that published articles about homes, apartments, 'sold', in a very wrong way, the concept that the 'minimal' style was just about white walls everywhere, kitchens without furniture or just with metal furniture, bathrooms that don't look like bathrooms and the idea that the green wasn't so useful in the end. It's horrific. When common journalists write about architecture, often is better to skip the article and just watch the pictures. This very beautiful building and the inside space (specially after the restoration) have, an imprint of minimalism but the very elegant design of the interiors, the choice of the materials and colors makes the space very warm. 'Warm', is not a word you commonly combine with the second most famous 'ism', of the XXth century, in architecture. So yes, I agree with your explanation, for the most. I like it. I don't think that the choice of the designer, here, was to create a minimal design but instead, a very warm and comfortable home for a family, surrounded by their favorite objects, collected during a lifetime. She designed a green roof just to have some 'green' under her eyes. It's lovely and very British. This is just my opinion. Have a good day

Scandinavian style is the American version of Scandinavia. While most homes in Scandinavia are dominated by white walls and clean lines, they're rarely as minimal as the "Scandinavian style" makes it out to be. This is because Scandinavia has a lot of architecture and design which also comes through in most homes, such as design furniture that are often colored or in warm woods, various designer lamps that provides different light sources and helps set a mood, and several plants or flowers that gives life to the space. Plus homes in Scandinavian cities are often over 100 years old and therefor holds a certain charm to them, even when they're renovated. All of this holds true in this London apartment, as well. However, this is opposite to the "Scandinavian Style" that also has clean white lines, but often fail to fill in this blank canvas with any design, color, light, or charm. You can easily see the difference if you search for 'scandinavian style', which will show you a lot of white cold looking homes, and then search for 'scandinavian hotel design', which is a much truer representation of a home in Scandinavia, adding a lot more warmth and color.

If she had problems with noise and privacy, why on Earth would you have your bedrooms on the ground floor? That's literally the opposite of where I would want a bedroom in a place that's noisy and lacks privacy. It's a shame none of the original interior features have been retained. I don't understand people who buy a period property without wanting the period charm, as if the architectural style is a mere façade. A house with some pub features would've been even more quirky.

There are some ideas which are doable for ordinary people like me: build a vertical book shelves up to the ceiling and use a ladder to reach the top, make a small garden under skylight or a bay window, and put your lovely pics on the wall the way you like.

this is an example of turning 4 walls and a roof to the maximum of a beautiful, functional home. this house is one of the most satisfying architectural sights I've watched on this channel.

"Upside down" is too dramatic. It's hardly uncommon for multistory apartments to have the shared living space on the upper floor (bedrooms on lower), particularly if there are balconies on the upper and not lower floor(s). Or high ceilings, as is the case above.

Of course the bedrooms are at the lower floor so people can clearly ear the cars while trying to sleep

This is a really beautifully designed house. Not like some trash that has modular & designer furnitures thrown into without any personality of the owner.

Bedrooms on the lower floors closer to street noise? Cool decor but that makes no sense to me.

The issue with all that sunlight is it destroys the spines of ones books; it bleaches them out. Color gone with time. Perhaps she installed UV protective glass or Plexi?

My thoughts as well. I do hope it's UV protective glass, otherwise her whole book collection is going to fade. That would be such a shame.

Literally my dream house. It must be such a freeing feeling to own a place like this, I could quite easily never leave it and remain in it's bubble of happiness, peace and tranquility.
