Eric: I have 2 Master’s in Civil Engineering and of Transportation Planning & English from NYU… and I gave up on Civil Engg after working for NYC Dept of Transportation within first 2 years… I never had any Prof that was _so kind in explaining and teaching values of building and planning_ … ….and I am not alone, as many like me left Engg for Banking and Finance in the 90’s… Your *Best Value* is an exceptional quality of teaching others _for creating value_ and that is why I am drawn to your videos.. I will approach you later this year for Design of construction project outside the US… I know you are busy to venture outside but I still would take a chance… Consider this as Best Compliment to your way of teaching and service oriented attitude ! 🙏🏼💐✌️🦋✅

A bit concerned about a 1/4” reveal at the bottom of the backsplash - typically, with any kitchen design, when you transition from a vertical to horizontal you want to smooth out that transition. This is why you have cove bases in kitchens. With the reveal, you’ll end up with gunk and grime that will be very hard to clean.
@qgallagh3 жыл бұрын
That being said… I like the rest of your decisions haha

Like you I try to get the most functionality from one thing as possible, but I’ve found in the end that simple is better. I think you may end up with the same issues with your shelves near the stove as you did before. Cooking grease coats everything and you may regret having the shelves do double or triple duty as you’ll be cleaning them constantly. Also, I wouldn’t put that 1/4” reveal at the counter either. Just another place for small crumbs and grease to collect and you find yourself one day trying to scrape out debris with an old plastic knife wondering why you designed it in the first place, lol! Just my humble opinion. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Great episode as always Eric. Re the range hood make sure you use smooth ducting to the outside. In NZ people often use this cheap plastic concertina tubing which just creates friction and dramatically slows down the air flow potential. The smoother the better.

Great video Eric ! Lovely to see that fellow architects also have to re-design / upgrade their own budget kitchens 'on a budget'. It can be hard for us sometimes, designing $100k kitchens for clients by day and then coming home to last centuries Ikea. I really enjoyed the enthusiasm for the small details. My favourite idea, the shelf inserts, as pull-out beer flights to match the glasses. Would leather get grubby and detract from the clean lines in your inspiration images? I’d go for a routed ergonomic finger-pull with a Rams-esque radius. Nice! Cheers Dom \m/

@@30by40 Really? 😮 Then it is different in the USA. Here you can buy it anywhere... except in Ikea, they have only laminated onces, and they cost like a good glass backsplash. The cheap ones are around 25-30 bucks. Usually, they are like 50-60, and exclusive ones are about 150-200 bucks. Plates come with holes and screws in the packet.

When design is simplified, like cabs turned to shelves, the toekick removed, low maintenance countertops to high maintenance, ask yourselves...over the years, why were they made more complex? It was to solve a problem they created.. My advise, as a home cook, on organizing the pantry with individual containers ... will you take the time to fill them every week? How hard will it be to clean those low profile shelves? Overall, it looks great.
@jame5j3 жыл бұрын
This is perfect timing. I’m hoping to diy my own kitchen in the coming weeks. Was going to use open shelves, but definitely going to rethink that. Also wanted the base units on legs, but having second thoughts now too. Although I think that maybe you’re implementation didn’t help, may have been too low, with too many legs. I’ve worked in multiple cafes with raised the units on a steel pedestal (maybe 8” high) and it was easy to sweep underneath.
@30by403 жыл бұрын
For sure...too many + too short...more "furniture-like" might have been fine e...also, my wife hates toe kicks...so, it's complicated!
@jame5j3 жыл бұрын
@@30by40 I really like the more ‘furniture like’ aesthetic, but I think practicality will win-out on this internal argument. Haha. As an aside, thank you for taking the time to share you’re book. Even with a new, more powerful exhaust fan, I fear that you will have many of the same problems you experienced previously with open shelving. This convenience works in commercial kitchens because the items stored on shelves are used, washed, and replaced on a more or less daily basis. Home kitchens just don't have that volume. So unless you plan to store only the number of drinking glasses that your family uses each day, you're going to end up washing some twice (before and after use). I'm guessing that the art work you refer to is in form of something washable (decorative tiles?). Also, the chef in me screams that cooking oils want to be stored in a dark place, not near heat and light where they more quickly spoil.
@30by403 жыл бұрын
We've been living with the new changes for a while now, new hood makes a huge difference! Works for us, as we keep only the things we regularly wash on the shelf...

Very very interesting to see you design affordances that have explicit intentions or uses to them (eg. bespoke details like the built-in spot for a tablet). Are these affordances a result of existing behavior, or do they come from "I think it would be nice to have a spot dedicated for this"? No judgement, I'm just really curious about your design process. I've been thinking a lot lately about the jump from general purpose affordances (eg. a flat surface you can put anything on, a space on the wall that anything could hang on) to spaces with explicit intentions, and how we decide to make that jump.

what are you thought on making countertops deeper, like 7-10 inches more that a standard depth?
@jscott-densic71043 жыл бұрын
I think you're on to something here. When I have a separate cooktop and oven setup (rather than a stand alone stove), I always make the countertop deeper around the cooktop. I trained as a chef and always appreciate the extra space when cooking. Here in Eric's case, it would also mean that he could use a standard depth refrigerator instead of a counter depth fridge and still have the fronts of the cabinets flush across that back of the kitchen. And having soon to be two teenage boys, I'm sure the extra space in the refrigerator would also come in handy!
@placacentrocasamania3 жыл бұрын
the problem with the fronts is due the absence of drip under the countertop. Like you made for roof the same environment you have for the countertop. saludos Gerardo
