Erin Pellegrino and Jake Rudin recently participated in a discussion titled ‘What is the Value of Architects’ organized by the AIANY Future of Practice Committee at the Center for Architecture with Michael Caton, AIA, Marjanne Pearson, and Enoch Sears, AIA, where Jacob Reidel and Andre Soluri facilitated the conversation.
This engaging dialogue delved into diverse perspectives on defining the value of architects, discussing questions such as:
→ What do architects, clients, and the public think the value of an architect is? Which is the ‘right’ definition?
→ Do we need to explain ourselves better or demonstrate the value of an architect?
→ Are there models for architects to align their value with outcomes within the professional services, or do we need different approaches?
→ What is it that in fields like medicine and law, people don’t simply step in without proper training, yet some feel they can in architecture and design, where we bear legal responsibility for people’s safety?
→ Why do many architects struggle with sales and business development, and is it a shared challenge?
→ What are your thoughts on regulations and business models within the architecture industry in the United States?
→ How do you respond to the argument that in a capitalist market, the value of architects is determined by what the market pays them? What evidence suggests it should be different from the current valuation?
We are grateful to the AIANY Future of Practice Committee and the Center for Architecture for hosting this conversation. We appreciate the opportunity to participate.
Please join the conversation and share your perspective with us. Your input is invaluable!
