Thanks for posting this! Can I give a suggestion? You guys should do more throwback videos for KZbin. I didn't grow up in the early days and I am so fond of all the vintage clips of WHAS-TV from the 60s to 80's.

Wow! Captain Kangaroo. That brings back memories. Also Fred Wiche. WHAS radio and television was the best. 👍

There is 100 percent chance I would have been watching this live at the time. I would have been 4 years old and Captain Kangaroo was my favorite.

My Fiance' was there at Fort Knox, KY for all three winters 1976, 1976-1977 & 1977-1978, as an MP working outside on the post gates and FROZE! With nothing more than his field jacket, issued gloves, and combat boots, he and others suffered varying degrees of frostbite. He himself still struggles with the effects of cold to this day. During the first day of the record snows, only a few plow trucks in the area around Fort Knox were struggling to clear the civilian roads. But, on the post, the Armored Division welded large steel plates onto some tanks and cleared the post roads, though not many vehicles were running anyway due to dead batteries and restricted movement. Not a fun time during his TOD there.

Think we missed two months of school. I was in junior high

To think that the kids who missed Captain Kangaroo are now perhaps older than the TV reporters back then.

I fought my way from Owensboro to Bowling Green to get to Western. I drove 5 mph and made it to discover the school was shut down for the first time in many years if ever.

I had only been gone from Kentucky a couple years or so and saw the pictures of the blizzard sent (yeah, mailed, not emailed or posted on the web…haha) by relatives. My best friend in Lexington said “You should have been here! It was great! I had to deliver my papers (yes, on his bicycle) in it! It was great!” Lol

I don't ever remember ice ever being in the river. I was born in 81 so this was before my time.
