I did something similar myself though not quite the same. BMW was proudly displaying the new K1 and the K100 range at an event, i was very interested in a K1 and not the K75/100 series. Naturally the K1 within the event tent was only for display and not for test riding. BMW Australia took my details and a week later i got this most beautiful letter inviting me to take the K1 for a test ride at any BMW dealer by presenting the letter. So i did, an hour from where i lived, which was also a Suzuki dealer in the heart of town. The dealer took my letter and looked at me and said I'll let you take a K100 for a test ride but not a K1, I asked him why, he said you can't afford one. I'm not interested in a K100 q replied and he said well thanks for coming and walked away. I went up the road to another bike shop took a RGS1000 for a test ride and brought it. 3 days later when i picked it up, i went back to the BMW/Suzuki shop and showed him just what i could afford. That shop was around for a very long time and i never went there again, even when i brought Suzuki's, 40 years later i slowed down and have owned the same Suzuki cruiser now for 14 years. Might be time for a change so i am ironically eyeing of a BWM R18 or the new Moto Guzzi Stevio.

After going to breakfast one Sat morning, we decided to hit up a local Ford dealership on our way home. **We were dressed in "Saturday running-around-doing errands" clothes: hoodies, jeans, t-shirts, sneakers. We AND the clothes we had on were clean. So, our salesman, an older fellow, was letting us test-drive cars while he rode w/us. During one of our test-drives, salesman asked what we did for a living. (This will be important in a sec ) I replied I was a Banker, and my husband said he was employed @ Akron University. The salesman got all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, thinking he was about to score a nice fat commission check😉🤑. As we noticed a change in his attitude, we silently agreed to mess with him. We must have test-drove about 20 different types cars that morning, (I got to test-drive a Mustang!) we kept that salesman hopping!😄 After the last test-drive, we told the salesman we'd "think it over" and stop on back. We laughed all the way home, BECAUSE, he never asked SPECIFICALLY what we did in our jobs! I was a Credit Card/Overdraft Specialist. My husband was a much sought-after Custodian, because his maintenance/cleaning skills were so excellent, ppl fought over him! (No joke) We were doing ok financially, and would have been able to afford a nice, rather sporty car. Too bad for that salesman!😁
