What I liked about this show was that the best friend wasn't totally useless. He is the rational one but wants to believe and help his friend(protagonist). He's concerned for him in a very real way. He's not totally apart from the story, he's an integral part. He brings important info from his research and eventually, after seeing the evidence, believes what's going on. This is TOTALLY unlike every other "friend" character in other horror movies/shows, who are incredibly stupid, useless, and one dimensional. At the end he is totally involved and important. It's incredibly refreshing and all it takes is smart writing for these type of characters to not be irrelevant.

pretty good. probably my biggest complaint was when they showed the creature in the static early on. it would have been creepier if they didnt make it do the close up boo scare where you can see it more clearly. if they had just left it as a vaguely defined figure in the static and then cut off it would have been much creepier. it was a case of showing just a bit too much too early, and the boo scare felt a little cheap in what is otherwise a very slick and well made mystery

[Potential Spoiler Theory] So one thing i could never dismiss from the final episode was when Dan was in the demons realm... Dan never actually saw Khaleago (however you spell it). Melody see's it in the window reflection and then when turning around see's it again the the mirror. So why is the demon still only in reflections in the demons on realm? My prediction is that the demon has possessed Melody, and Melody is the vessel to hold a whole other world inside her, to me this also explains why Samuel grabbed her to bring her back to present day, his motives were to resurrect Khaleago! i think the cult had been doing the ritual wrong all those times and never having a vessel be able to bring back the demon, the difference in Samuel ritual was that he used melody who is a Buldung Witch to be the vessel!? what made me think they were doing it wrong was when the red hair'd lady was sooooo eager to find the missing tapes of the circle movie, it was like they were trying to learn from mistakes. i am also on board with Samuel and Virgil being the same person.

the problem with this is that it was already explained why the red hair'd lady was so eager to find tapes. Melodys mom explains it in the last episode that the tapes thin the veil between both worlds. It was just another key in the ritual.

i loved the mirrored comparisons between what we see on the tapes and what we see in reality. like specifically, the hallway layout in the compound being essentially identical to those in the apartment building, and the food found in the pantry at the compound are all foods seen in the convenience store scene from the tapes. its like the whole experience was made to blend the barriers between the two timelines so those moments when they bleed together happen on purpose.

@ParkerJColeAuthor2 жыл бұрын
Quite insightful. Comets are often seen as harbingers of destruction and the mention of a comet pair can't be simply descriptive. An idea I had was the Vos Society, Sam and Virgil, have actually imprisoned Khalaygo in the other world and Khalaygo is trying to come into our world so it can go back to its partner, Kharon who keeps coming back every 70 years waiting for it. What gives me that idea is the phrase 'evidence of our devotion, blood and bone, seeping through." The significance of a pair -- Mel and Dan, separated by time. The Baldung Witch's 'blood', and the correct tuning fork, the 'bone'. Regardless, I'd love to see where the show goes. I enjoy stories that give you lots of interesting places to go!

I wonder if the Priest was genuinely trying to help, since we find out later that Kasandra has been feeding Jess the mold through the tea. After finding that out, I think the Priest was trying to make her purge the mold, and that he knew the mold was what was causing her seizures. That's probably why he said not to call an ambulance and why the doctors always say it's in her head: cause the seizures Jess experiences aren't caused by anything physical, but rather by the supernatural entity tied to the mold.

Once Mel was in the other realm Annabel stopped painting Iris leading me to believe that she is no longer speaking to her from the other side. While it is challenging to maintain the same level of quality across multiple seasons, I am confident that the directors and writers will rise to the occasion. Glad I watched this, there were some concepts I missed. I like the idea that Virgil and Samuel are the same person who has used time travel to basically conspire with his younger self. I do question whether Dan is actually in the past, though. The Otherworld was described as "like our world, but so much more." If Dan is stuck in the Otherworld, it could just be an Otherworld representation of the past. The spirit is described as desperately lonely and willing to do anything to keep people stuck in their Otherworld; is it such a leap to think that Dan is stuck in some kind of maze in the Otherworld? Lots of questions need answering and I can't wait for a season 2 of Archive 81, maybe we will find out what the title even means!

Thanks so much for covering the show, and also for this excellent, attentive analysis, which did wonders to combat my bad habit of only being able to give a maximum of 90% of my attention to a tv show. One element of the show which I'm still mulling over is the way Julia describes Kaelego as "lonely" in its otherworld. Why would an entity of pure destruction want human company? It makes me wonder if Kaelego wants something perhaps more complex and specific than "just" destruction.

Guys, I know it's a ton of fun to speculate, but there's no reason to ignore the source material when it is freely available. Check out the podcast, all 3 seasons are there. There are obviously some differences, but the story beats are there. The one disservice this ending explained did was not mentioning the very obvious references to Dante's Divine Comedy. - The main character is named Dan Turner (Dan T, Dante). - He is being led by a character literally named Virgil. A second guide named Beatrice also exists in the form of Beatriz, a psychic who acts as a kind of guide to Melody, and therefore Dan. - Both Melody and Dan are heavily impacted by fire, you know, like an "Inferno." - Tamara is working on a piece called "Purgatory," and describes her work as "not like Puccini." Puccini composed an opera which very heavily alluded to "Dante," but was on the lighter side, whereas Tamara is working on very dark pieces, hence "not like Puccini." - The comet is named Charon, which is also the name of the ferryman who brought the newly dead souls across the river Acheron (the river of pain, woe, or sorrow, something Dan and Melody are very familiar with) to Hades. It's no coincidence that the 7th episode (the "flashback" episode) is called "The Ferryman." The podcast itself, in season 2, is pretty clear that the Otherworld is bad place. It's hellish. Hades in Christianity is another word for hell. That said, the Greek Hades was simply the underworld, or "otherworld." Tartarus, which is sort of a section of Hades, is the more appropriate analogue for Christian Hell. Kaelego is described as both a god and a demon, which again feels like a clash between Greek and Christian interpretations of Hades. In any case, Hades was the god of the dead, and the Otherworld in Archive 81 is very closely related to death, so it's not too much of a stretch to see Kaelego being heavily influenced by Hades. All of that is not to take away from the other references too. Lovecraft certainly also seems to be an influence here (cults and the such, the mold). There's certainly a callback to "The Shining" as well, what with a man being isolated in a remote location to work, and obvious concerns about his sanity (they even refer to it in the first episode). Some of Samuel's pseudonyms make reference to famous occultists like Aleister Crowley. Anyway, personally, I loved it. I see some people complaining that they showed the monster too early, but that's kind of missing the point. The demon existing and being shown isn't all that important. The horror in this show is not about seeing a demon, that he even exists is required for the plot, so showing him early isn't an issue or blowing their load early. The series is creepy without Kaelego showing up early. Knowing that he is "real" makes it even creepier.

For anyone who enjoyed this series, I’d definitely recommend listening to the podcast, as it’s literally 100 times better, aswell as the tv series cut a lot of important details and plot points from the series, the creeping dread everyone is talking about in the comments here is much better in the Podcast, just for the love of god listen to the podcast, StraightTMA was right, just about the wrong podcast to tv adaptation, my girl Melody didn’t deserve to be done dirty like that
@LordDarque2 жыл бұрын
They downplayed Melody and her friends relationship in the Netflix show. I'm glad they gave Ratty a larger role in the TV show. And I hope season 2 has the Leviathans.

I loved this series so much, each episode is so unsettling that it leads you at the edge of your seat. My only issue was with the supernatural demon, if the ritual brings people into his world then how does he come out and into the real world?
@Vicerion172 жыл бұрын
I assume that when the ritual is actually done properly(done with the proper tuning folk) it becomes a two way door rather than just trapping people when done wrong since Mel actually escaped when the door was opened unlike Iris when the door was opened the second time.
@MetroidPurples2 жыл бұрын
@@Vicerion17 Yeah and they didnt need a sacrifice, so having a Baldur (probably not the right spelling) do the ritual properly opens then door since its their bloodline and magic.

Thank you for covering this.. I really loved this show, I got right into it and couldn't get enough. The idea that Virgil could BE Samuel literally just blew my mind! I wonder if Dan is in a new divergent timeline, created basically because this shit happened. I thought all the bal dungs or whatever had renounced their powers like as a coven long ago, so I didn't think any of them had had actual powers for some time.. So I didn't consider Mel potentially gaining powers, guess we'll see.

I was into the podcast too way back when it started. Folks on the audio drama forums who have taken in both say they changed quite a bit for the Netflix series. So whether you come in from the podcast or from the Netflix series you should get enough new to make it worthwhile to check out both versions.
