(Archived Version) Background Lecture on Descartes and His Historical Milieu

In this video, I provide an overview of the historical trajectory that led Descartes to embrace a quantitative science and a heliocentric view of the solar system (of the universe, really). I touch on Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, Copernicus, Galileo, and St. Ignatius of Loyola, in addition to talking about Descartes here.
