Guildford Cathedral Choir, directed by Barry Rose:
Recording in Guildford Cathedral, March 1966:
(This LP was originally released in 1966, complete with a cover photo showing an almost-complete Guildford Cathedral in the snow [see accompanying graphic], under catalogue number HMV CLP 3580 [Mono] / CSD 3580 [Stereo]. In the late 1970s, the disc was re-released on the HMV “Greensleeve” label (ESD 7021) with the original B-side - the Hely-Hutchinson - now as the A-side. For many years this was the only recording of the “Carol Symphony” in the catalogue. The copyright in this recording is held by Warner Music Group; it has been uploaded under the terms of WMG's agreement with KZbin, for which we are grateful)
- 1. Fantasia on Christmas Carols (Ralph Vaughan Williams)
- 2. All in the morning (arr. Vaughan Williams)
- 3. Bethlehem Down (Peter Warlock)
- 4. Adam lay ybounden (Peter Warlock)
- 5. Wassail Song (arr. Vaughan Williams)
- 6. Carol Symphony (Victor Hely-Hutchinson)

It's Christmas Eve and I just finished up my very Presbyterian Christmas Pageant and Carol Sing. I'm exhausted. Coming home we were looking on KZbin for some good Christmas music and found two lengthy programs from Guilford Cathedral. We are enjoying them immensely whilst having a couple of whiskeys and water to wind down. I'm finding it immensely refreshing that it's not rehashing of all the old standards from King's and Westminster Abbey, St. Pauls, etc. I looked up Guildford Cathedral on Wikipedia, and was looking at it. No, it's not a medieval landmark, complete with all the trappings expected of such a thing. It's modern and somehow refreshing, which is what we've felt listening to the KZbins. Bless you for bringing this gift to us tonight. We're tired and ready for refreshing. Thank you. Ken Potter, Scarborough Presbyterian Church, Briarcliff Manor, NY

I listened to this a week after a 7.8 earthquake struck my country, New Zealand,. and triggered many other quakes - an unstoppable chain reaction. I thought the building I was in would collapse and I was going to die. This is most beautiful, fimiliar and reassuring after terror was all around. Thank you.

It's hard to know what to say in response to such a moving comment, but we're glad this music offers solace at a horrifying time. We might all spare a thought for those affected by this earthquake.

It certainly went on for at least a year and a half. Internet was restored with speed by heroic efforts so that we could find out the instructions of the day about evacuations and recent records and place of faults which had moved suddenly one after another. But full internet took a while to resume.

Amazing, This is the first record of the cathedral choir that bought. It was so ground breaking especially to be to be to be performed in our new cathedral. Very special to me.

The baritone in the "Fantasia" is the late John Barrow, and the tenor in "Adam lay ybounden" is Robert Hammersley.

Some of the most beautiful contemporary yet classical Christmas music ever recorded. My mother had this LP, and we played it every yuletide season. There is little so evocative of the season for me that Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Christmas Carols.
