I’m English but my great grandfather Jaime was born in Ferrol and, as well as his older brother, we’re friends with francos family growing up. Always amuses me that my great grandads childhood friend is the face of this anthem

Francisco Franco was the best dictator of the 1930's. He refused to ally himself with Hitler and Mussolini, remaining neutral in World War II. He promoted labor rights, and saved hundreds of thousands of French Jews, not only allowing them asylum in Spain, but providing them safe passage to Portugal, and later on, the United States. He fought against Communism, and had the smallest cult of personality. Shortly before his death, Franco welcomed back the Spanish Royal family, and because of him, the Spanish Monarchy has been restored. Finally, Franco had only a small cult of personality. This song has nothing at all to do with Franco. The words are simply: "Long live Spain, Glory to the Fatherland," everything a national anthem should be. There are no words about Franco, raising arms in a military salute is what many countries do. If you put Franco into an arena with all the other dictators of the 1930's, he would beat them all. Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, Tojo, all of these were the most evil men ever. Franco would beat them because he is GOOD.

Franco had his errors, and some violent acts took place during the dictatorship, that does not mean he was absolutely evil, he did many good things, and must be seen as a historical figure that fought for our country even if he commited certain errors, has a visionary

@@Ttegegg Nothing is good about a war. To be neutral is to not engage in war, and to not engage in war is to save the lives of your people. Franco saved the lives of not only his people, but the hundreds of Thousands of French Jews who escaped Hitler. He may have had Fascistic tendencies, and they might have led him to refuse to ally with the Allied Powers. But if he supported the Axis, he would have sent all those he had saved to die in Concentration Camps. And he did not, because he was neutral. Being neutral is infinitely better than joining a war.

Bueno, la letra es de José María Pemán, escrita en 1928. Se usó durante la dictadura, pero no es el Himno de España de Franco, ni fue himno oficial tampoco. Luego está la del maestro Eduardo Marquina de un año antes y encargada por el Rey Alfonso XIII, esa algún podemonguer también dirá que es franquista XD XD XD, porque el catalán!!!! Marquina, se posicionó con los sublevados. Escúchala, puede que te guste más. A mi la de Marquina me encantaría que fuese la oficial, pero me conformaría con la de Pemán que también es una letra con brío.

This is unironically one of the most patriotic and beautiful anthems I have ever heard. I can definitely see why this anthem would make one proud to be Spanish. It's too bad that this song is now associated with 'fascism', which Franco refused to ally himself with.

I remember when i was younger i learned to hate Franco. 1. I was left wing ( many are before paying taxes lol). 2. I had a left wing Spanish teach in High School. Now i am older and have read more i start to say that Franco did more good for Spain than bad. Especially in the beginning it was bad with starvation and harsh repression but later on with reforms Spain transformed into being a large and influential economy thanks to Franco. Now you see those Spaniards who were not even born when Franco died removing his monuments and legacy. Especially now when communist are part of the government ( WOW!) they try to hide bad policy by going back and altering the past. Spain also experienced more corruption after Franco death.

To be very specific, the Anthem during Franco's tenure never had any official lyrics. These were written by poet José Maria Peman and predate the dictator's regime(1928).

Franco let Hitler bomb Spanish towns to test weapons like the "bombing of Guernica" and anyone who didn't agree with him got killed during the night. There has been countless of innocent victims because of him. And he was allied with Hitler which makes him even worse, after all he sent "The blue Division" to aid the Nazi regime in Germany fight against the Russians. So yes he did bring misery and terror.

99.9 percent of Spanish speaking people in the entire world give their kids Catholic names. As for the 'Nazi' salute...it's called the Roman salute and prior to WWII we did it in the US to salute our flag. The Mexicans use it to this day.
