The moment I saw "10.6 or newer" I went into my room, turned on my old iMac, downloaded this, went to youtube and played a 720p 30FPS video without any problems, it didn't like full screen but it ran a lot better than the last supported version of firefox, I hope these devs keep this browser going. By the by, its an iMac from 2006 with a core duo running 10.6.8.

It's not even funny how much better 10.6.8 is than any revision of Mac OSX since. One word sums up why I think 10.6.8 is the best... spaces.

I'm glad there are a few people who try to keep the old hardware going in today's "throwaway" world. I guess I'm lucky that my 2010 MacBook Pro can still run the latest MacOS release as it's my "daily driver." It'll even run for about 2 hours on the original battery. There was something about that Twitter page that looked familiar, just can't quite put my finger on it... ;)

I have the latest version of Google Chrome running in Linux Mint 19 on a Sony Vaio desktop PC from 2005 with a Pentium D 820 2.8 ghz with 3 gb ram and it runs fine even for watching KZbin videos. For some reason, I actually like collecting old PCs. I even still have a Toshiba Satellite laptop from 1998 with Windows 98 second edition with a 266 mhz Pentium MMx cpu and still works fine at least with old software and even some (very limited) web browsing.

I ran into the same problem on my 1st generation Mac Pro, which I firmware upgraded to 2.1, replaced the two dual core Xeons with 4 quad core ones, and the factory Radeon HD2600XT was replaced for a HD5850 (not flashed, so no boot screen). I was able to hack El Capitan on it, but Autodesk Fusion 360 would crash after about 5 minutes, and Cities: Skylines wouldn't start at all. I ended up installing Windows 10 on it, which gave this machine a whole new life. All the latest programs can run, Fusion 360 is stable and Cities: Skylines runs just fine. Shame on Apple that I have to turn to a Microsoft product in order to keep my Mac usable for my everyday activities.

There is 'TenFourFox', which is a port of Firefox that runs on a Mac OS X.4 PowerPC. I am not sure if I would use it day-to-day(it's slow) but if you need an up to date browser, it is there. There was also Classilla for Mac OS 9, which was an attempt to get a modern browser on that system but I think it's no longer maintained.

To be honest, I was wanting to test the unstable port of Pale Moon to Mac OS, but the only Mac I had at the time was a 2006 model, so it was a 32 bit system, and the developer did not show interest for compiling the Mac OS builds for x86 32 bit, only 64 bit. However, assuming that works on 32 bit Macs, it looks like I'll have something better to use than Firefox ESR 45, as I already use Pale Moon as my primary web browser, except on Android where I use Firefox Focus and DDG Privacy Browser instead. 4:29 Yeah, I've had that error quite a number of times on my 2006 Mac Mini, which, as it's a 32 bit system, is stuck on 10.6. 2007 and 2008 Macs, on the other hand, tended to have 64 bit processors with 32 bit firmware, which results in them getting officially stuck on 10.7, however, I remember there was a guide on how to hack 10.8 onto one of them. 5:00 Ah, I see, it's a fork of the Pale Moon 27 series, and I assume they used that as they couldn't get the new Moonchild Productions UXP (which Pale Moon 28 and Basilisk use) to work on these older versions.
@TimurTripp2
@TimurTripp2 6 жыл бұрын
The download page shows a 32-bit build available. But the Core Duo Mac mini can be upgraded to 64-bit, as Apple used a socketed processor in the 2006-2007 Mac minis.

this is kind of paradox- so much single board computers and cheap compact computers are sold today- when in theory we could just use a lot of old high end stuff... I guess planned obsolescence is the way manufacturers are "solving" that problem...
@Charlesb88
@Charlesb88 6 жыл бұрын
Oli K for some uses an older retro computer might work fine over single board or other cheap compact, but there are particular uses where a newer hardware is the only way to go. Single board computers like the RaspberryPi have the advantage of being very compact for uses where size matters. They are also better suited for use as part of a larger project such as building a robotic device, advanced weather station, retro-gaming system, etc. Any task where your writing all sorts of sensors, motors, switches, cameras, etc. They are just much better hobbyist computers then old PPC Macs or 32bit x86 PC’s/Macs. They also can somewhat cheaper then a suitable old computer for some use cases. As for the cheap compact PC, depending on the model, benefits can include a much smaller size, faster processor, ability to run a modern OS, modern IO like USB 3, or the ability to run modern apps not available or capable on the older computers. For some things though where space, speed, modern software, etc. is not so much the issue then using an older Mac or PC might work fine for a hobbyist project as you can get usb to serial adaptors for old usb only Macs, and DVI to HDMI cables for modern HD TV’s. With OS X Macs you have the Unix command line/subsystem to run Unix software and do programming in Python, Perl, etc. and with 32 bit X86 you can run Linux and mimic Raspbian, the Linux distribution made for the RasberryPi. So it all really depends on wha5 your trying to do.

Using old high end stuff isn't practical due to its excessive size and power consumption, as well as its lack of support for modern instruction sets. Also, that isn't a paradox.
@olik136
@olik136 6 жыл бұрын
@@oledcrt I know that it is no paradox- that is why I wrote kind of. The lack of support is exactly what the problem is- and the slightly worse power consumption is far far far outweighed by not needing to develop, make, buy and ship new tech. Of course that does not mean we should all use old Macbooks- but seemingly obsolete technology could be efficiently used as a resource- or at least the life span of products should not be intentionally shortened to make you buy new stuff- like when you have an older smartphone that still would do everything it needs to do- but doesn't get an update (not for technical reasons) and is now useless- there is no money in it- that is the reason

apple's hate for working computers (ones with actual cooling) didn't stop with the passing of steve jobs. they seem to keep doing this "let's keep cpu and gpu fans off, until they are throttling down and have reached 100c at least 5 seconds ago" bs with their current laptops as well. then to top this thermal nightmare off, they keep chasing thinner and thinner designs year after year. making the thermal issues worse with every new model. and yet people keep wasting their money, after their old apple devise dies.

I thought OLD meant PowerPC. It's crazy that they have been intel for so long that a Core 2 DUO is an OLD mac when macs have been around for over 30 years. So this is a dumb question, but do you only use old technology? Archiving all your music onto a computer that is possibly going to die soon seems like a risk. I'd guess it's a mechanical hard drive. I'm sure you could build a decent computer for real cheap and end up with better day to day usability than an early Mac Book.

The Apple Store will not work for downloading apps on a older Mac Desktop or Laptop the best way is downloading apps from a Windows PC to save it and copy it to a USB Flash Drive and bring the USB Flash Drive to a MAC Desktop or Laptop to install the new App or Software

I downloaded it (for my Mac 10.6), but everytime I try an open it, it crashes and I get a "ArcticFox quit unexpectedly" message. Does anyone have any idea how to proceed?
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 5 жыл бұрын
The developers are aware of that problem with the latest version. Just keep trying and eventually it will work: "If you get startup crashes with this release (27.9.19) on OS X, keep force reopening it 5-10 times until a dialog box pops up. Selecting 'reset preferences to arctic fox defaults' will fix it. Sorry for inconvenience. We are looking in to the cause."

@@vwestlife Thanks for replying! I tried to reopen it quite a bit, to no avail. It's also saying "zero kb" so I will try and clear up some space on my computer. I tried to leave a comment/question in github's forum, but apparently I need an updated browser to get an account and leave comments haha.

Yeah, I got this same problem on my 10.6 Mac. The reopen a bajillion times thing doesn't work at all. Anyone know where you can get an older version of this 'updated' (the irony) browser? I assume this bug is just in the latest release.

Yeah, I tried youtube on my 12" Powerbook G4 not too long ago with TFF and it was not pretty. Sound seemed okay, but I was getting like 1 frame per 2 or 3 seconds! It's the fastest 12" 1.5Ghz model, but I'm sure the video card is much weaker compared to the 15"/17" models.

@@smbu there's no support for video decoding even on the newer pb g4s. If there is, I haven't found a way to get it working, stuff like QuickTime enabler and mactubes doesn't work for whatever reason. Might be because I'm stuck on 10.4 instead of using 10.5 but I don't see why any of those solutions wouldn't work.

You forgot to mention that SeaMonkey 2.40 is fully compatible with Snow Leopard and with a modest bit of digging, you can put in uBlock Origin, User Agent Switcher (with it's full list of systems as a download from a second site), noScript, and True Fullscreen in KZbin add-ons that will keep you as secure as you can be, and with the exception of online banking and broker sites like Scottrade or e-Trade, you can use any site. The ONE sole caveat that is non-finance related is Instagram, which is accessed with the User Agent Switcher add-on set to an iPhone 3 browser. With the UAS set to Firefox 55, SeaMonkey will even run the youtube in dark mode, which is nice. BUT, I will definitely put this in my MacPro3,1 - and put it through the add-on paces and see what works and doesn't - as I use Snow Leopard as my daily driver as I can't stand the way El Capitan runs with all the iCloud-enabled fooferaw. Thank you SO much for making this video!
